VA police have a bad reputation for civil liberties of all kinds, even where the law is theoretically on your side. It's not like GA where they're cautious of their safety but generally supportive of second amendment rights. Be very careful. It's just a trip for a meeting. Then you'll be back in civilization and able to carry all you want.

I was thinking about bringing 3d printed parts that combine to make an AR-15 lower and then handing them to him to check and then taking my picture with him like that. There are metal detectors and body scanners everywhere.Seriously, I had issues on the mall getting into museums with my swiss army knife and that was years ago. You could not sneak a nail clipper between your butt cheeks into an actual federal building .

Now say you leave the gun in your car thinking that no one will have a reason to search it. That is a huge mistake because the DC police are infamous for never missing an opportunity to nail someone for parking or traffic violations. DC can also be confusing to drive around and it's very easy to run a light or make an illegal turn. Now suppose the cop doesn't like your tourist plates and decides he wants to do a search, now you're fucked.

All this for a gun that you probably wouldn't be able to get to 90% of the time you're there.

Ask the FFL dealer there if he'd hold on to it for a day. Legally, you'd have to fill out a 4473 if you left it there to get it back. Most FFLs would do it for like 10 bucks.

If you don't want that much social interaction, leave it at a gunsmith's for a deep cleaning and lube. Come back to shop after trip.
