Got mine,cleaned of cosmoline, disassembled the bolt cleaned the firing pin and channel of cosmoline and used a bit of 2000 grit sandpaper to polish where the firing pin flat rust welded against the retaining dowel from 53 years of storage since whoever slathered it in cosmoline didn't bother to remove the firing pin,dip in cosmo and reassemble. (I`m assuming they though this would be addressed by whoever recommisioned it.) reassembled bolt and shook it to make sure the firing pin rattled. Anyone who has slam fired an SKS is a jerk off and needs a gun smith to hold their hand.

They're both fine and do 90+% the same thing for your average shooter when it boils down.
I do prefer my sks to a wasr tier ak, but I wouldn't choose it over an arsenal with all the modernized features. The sks's longer sight radius is a noticeable help downrange, but I still place more importance on ammo brands than sight radius alone when it comes to accurate shooting. And I'm a guy who loves using stripper clips, so that's also part of my decision. Strippers up the fun for me when I'm shooting.
I'll still prefer my cz vz58 over either though, there's a few really nice things about it that neither the sks or ak can compete with.

And strippers are FAR easier to carry with me than 30rd mags. I find mags awkward and annoying while strippers fit nicely in almost any decent sized belt pouch.

AK beats SKS in every way except price. Some say that SKS accuracy is slightly better, but that's when you're comparing some Russian with matching parts to a Khyber Pass ak. There's a reason why the Dragunov is a souped-up AK and not a souped-up SKS.

You compare, say, a Yugo SKS to an Npap and the npap will outshoot the Yugo 9 times out of 10


SKS was a solid platform, but the AK completely eclipses it, rendering it almost immediately obsolete.

If I could decide for you, I'd get an arsenal slr-107fr with all the modern features.
Make your first 762 ak purchase your last 762 ak purchase since you started at the top and won't feel like you're missing out on stuff like the ak-74 style brake/front sight base and folding stocks.
And it's a shame vz58s aren't stocked like aks in regular stores. I really think it'd be a good idea to hold/disassemble etc one and see what you think before you drop big bucks on either.
