getting my first ccw soon, so far ive settled on the shield. Currently trying to pick between the safety/no safety version. Am I an idiot for leaning towards the one with the thumb safety? I already have a glock 17 that im used to but its too big to carry and ive never carried before and honestly the safety gives me some peace of kind
also small carry gun general thread
>>
>>30999859
Go for a glock 26. The trigger is identical and you can even use the 17 mags in the 26. I have one and I love it.
>>
For me personally, I know that my trigger discipline is more than enough to never negligently discharge a firearm. But I have a DA no safety sig 2022 with no safety and even when its chambered and I'm being ultra safe it gives me an uneasy feeling (when im not intentionally shooting it)
I'd go with the thumb safety but it's just because I'm a worry wort who would like the extra measure.
>>
>>30999859

Get a superior Walther PPS M2.

Shield is shit unless you blow $165 extra for an Apex trigger kit.

If you get the one with the safety, you can use if you want or leave it off. If it gives you peace of mind then get it. However, there's a small chance the safety might be accidentally on (or you forgot) that one time you need it.
>>
>>30999859
It doesn't really make a difference as it's not something you can easily toggle accidentally. So if you don't want to use it you just leave it off, I carry mine with it off and only use the safety when it's resting at the range or when I'm going to be somewhere safe for a while and I may take off my holster.

Check out a Glock 43. I have both the shield and 43, i prefer the 43. It also conceals way better.

also
>ever getting a firearm with a magazine disconnect.
get the No-Safety version or go home. When you're not holding your weapon, a good holster is the best safety.

If you're dead set on an external safety, check out either the CZ Rami or Sig p938

I got my shield with a safety... And carried it for a few months with the safety on. But now that I have God like trigger discipline and I kinda want to get a cc gun with out a safety.

I would have never carried my gun with out a safety at first so having a safety was like wearing training wheels. Now I'm ready for a big boy gun.

I don't know how you feel about your trigger discipline. But if you don't feel safe with out a safety then go ahead get some training wheels.

I can second that as a shield+apex owner.

>However, there's a small chance the safety might be accidentally on (or you forgot) that one time you need

i used to be a pro-safety use advocate, until i missed a shot on a huge rabbit because i left my safety on and forgot. It was a pretty shitty feeling, and it just got worse when i realized that if that was someone trying to harm me, i could have been dead.
>mfw
>>
>>31000030
The Shield doesn't have a disconnect, the full sized M&P's do and it's easily disabled.
>>
>>30999884
im more looking for a single stack right now
>>
>>30999919
>Shield is shit unless you blow $165 extra for an Apex trigger kit.
True, but the Shield comes in cheaper than its competition and if you scored one on sale($280 in my case) you can get the Apex kit and still spend less than what its competitors go for.

Of course what fits you better ergonomically comes first and it just so happened the M&P line fit me perfectly. Go and shoot everything you can before deciding on a carry gun, don't just take people's word on the internet.
>>
>>31000030

Im probably just a little nervous as ive enevr carried before. I wodner if a thumb safety would be like training wheels or would it set me back for when I feel I dont need it and get something else/ Maybe in the winter ill cc the Glock 17

Own a Shield without the thumb safety. The concern for an accidental discharge is something I get but understand that a manual safety is not a substitute for proper trigger discipline. Get a good quality holster and practice your drawstroke, always looking for any obstructions when putting your gun away.

I use an Incog and I have an extreme fucking fear of getting shot in my thigh and bleeding out but it doesn't stop me from carrying that way because I'm confident with my equipment and myself.

If you're that worried about carrying a loaded gun on you, look into getting a traditional double action pistol. Just don't get a striker gun with a manual safety, it's absolutely unneeded and you'll grow to regret getting one later on if you do.
>>
>>31000158
If it has an external safety, it has a magazine disconnect. There are only two versions of the shield 9mm. The California version, and the good one with none of the bullshit "safety" features

Are you going to tell people you're a professional masonry worker and that big ass thing in your pocket is just a brick you brought home from work?

Check out CZ, if you're not a fan of 1911-style weapons.
>>
>>31000616
Mine has an external safety and I can shoot without a magazine. CA/MA have their own compliant versions separate from the versions every other state can get.
>>
>>31000650
Not everybody dresses like a faggot bruh, some people rock baggy clothes, I can cc my deser eagle BB gun and it doesn't print at all.
>>
>>31000650

You're stupid dude, any full size handgun can be concealed under a hoodie when you're out and about in the winter. If you happen to be taking off your coat AND hoodie in the winter (at least here in the Midwest) then you're most likely indoors sweating your balls off in a place with trusted people. Where do you live? Saudi Arabia? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think in most places in the US you can be comfortably wear at least a hoodie through the winter months
>>
I'm also interested in a handgun for CC. Thinking about the Taurus pt709, a makarov, or maybe the CZ Rami.
I'm fine with 9mm.
I'd prefer a manual safety, just for peace of mind.
Would prefer an IWB holster at 5 o'clock.
I'm thinking a compact would be good for me, as I'm 6', 215lbs and don't wear tight clothes.
Used is ok, as long as the gun is in good shape and I don't have to worry about it being rekt by a previous owner.

Price is a concern for me, as I'm a broke-ass college student. Not counting ammo costs, I'd like to sit at around $400, gun+holster. If there's something REALLY great that's worth spending extra for, I would.

Any advice my fellow /k/ommandos can offer?

Yeah I understand it's sort of a meme to hate on Taurus, but this particular pistol did pretty well compared to other single-stack 9mm handguns:

So I looked into the M&P Shield, and it seems like a pretty solid carry pistol overall, with features I want: manual safety, no magazine lock, magazine that gives extended grip, good performance, and shoots 9mm.
MSRP is ~$450. If I walked into my local gun store, would I be able to get it cheaper than that, or would I have to order online in order to get a better deal?
If so, what kind of deal is realistic on a new M&P Shield?
>>
>>30999859
They safety is actually pretty easy to operate and if you use a thumbs forward grip it's right there. If you practice your draw it'd be pretty easy to train yourself to flick the safety as you draw.
>>
>>31000301
ive also looked at Kahrs, but im not sure on them
>>
>>31000650
Ive carried a glock 17, Sig p226 and beretta 92fs before. its not as easy as a compact but its totally doable
also he said he lives in MA and they have some cold winters
>>
>>31000972
21, also in college, only have the glock 17 that I take to the range every few months. I should go more but life gets in the way. Ive alos been meaning to finally start cc'ing and after all the shit thats been going down I figure nows a good time. Its really just about making the time for it, ive been putting it off for too long
>>
>>31000616
mine has a safety and says caution can fire with magazine removed
>>
>>30999859
No it really just depends how you train. I learned on a gun with a safety and have always kept it that way due to muscle memory. I have a shield that I enjoy carrying, the trigger isn't the best but it works.
>>
>>31003288
this. its literally right there to hit with your thumb and thats if you even use it which you obviously dont have to. it has a very nice satisfying click too would be hard to accidentally turn on i think
>>
>>30999859
For me, personally, I went with the no safety model. If you're not actively shooting it, it should be holstered or unloaded IMO. I'm a forgetful person so I'm more worried about putting the safety on and forgetting about it when I need to shoot than I am about NDing because I don't have a safety. If a safety is what keeps your from NDing, they you aren't following the rules of firearm safety. For a rifle, I understand the necessity of a mechanical safety, but when it comes to handguns I view trigger discipline and a good holster as the safety.

They're double action only. I haven't shot one but I've held multiple PM9's and CW380's from time to time and each one could not drop mags freely and had to be eased out by hand.

Really wished they had a lot more aftermarket going for them and the price is a bit iffy.

You can frequently find them for $350 new with 1 7rd and 1 8rd mag. PSA occasionally has sales.

Slickguns is your friend. Bookmark it along with ammoseek.

And it would be awfully wise to snatch up a couple of spare 8rd magazines if you order from grabagun. They seem to have them in stock for $20 which is an awfully good price.

I own a holster but it's not the right size. It sinks in to much for me to carry it seriously. Plus it's an outside open carry holster, I usually only use it for hikes or range trips.

Usually I just cram it in my waist band at my 3:30-4:00
>>
>>31005686

So either you're carrying on an empty chamber or you risk having an ND when "cramming" a loaded pistol into your waistband with an exposed trigger.

Both are stupid and dangerous.
>>
>>31005686

What exactly is more dangerous about stuffing a loaded firearm into your waistband than stuffing it into a holster? It's not pointing at my dick or anything and the way I secure it between my belt and pants I feel is pretty safe for walking about town without risking it dropping and accidentally going off. not that most firearms even do that.

Any particular reason it's so unsafe?
>>
>>31005804
To poorfag at the moment. My dad has a remora for his Gen 2 G17.
A co-worker of mine keeps raving about BlackHawk molded high impact plastic holsters, he recently got on for his sig.Neverr eally been big into brands so iv never heard of them, are they decent?
Plus I really do like the lack of profile when I carry with no holster.
>>
>>31006047
>nothing guarding the trigger, increased risk of ND, which YOU will be held accountable for
>increased risk of the gun falling out in front of people, possibly causing a freakout which YOU will be responsible for (if carrying without a holster is a crime in your area)
>countless other ways this could fuck things up for you
Don't, man. Just don't.
>>
>>31006115
My belt does a great job at covering my trigger, and the one pictured a post ago isn't even my carry belt. The belt I use for carry is a lot wider and does an excellent job at covering it.

I live in WA no holster laws to my greater knowledge, for living in the libtard capital of WA known as king county the one time it accidentally was exposed in public no one freaked out, one guy standing in line asked me about it and we ended up shooting the shit about guns and cars.
As much as I'm loving this dont do what Donny dont does reminder, I gotta ask, please elaborate on a few examples of non holster carry "fucking things up"
Seriously I'm curious, I'm not even going to lie I never put much thought into different obscure ways other than accidentally brushing against my car door and the gun gets tugged out.
