So after bullets it's lazers and then rail guns but what comes after that? Guass? Plasma? What will people use for HD 1000 years from now?

No senpai it's bullets, rails, lasers, plasma, gravpoint manipulators, and then something that causes the space between atoms to explode.

Lasers are niche because they produce huge amounts of heat, waste most of their energy, and still require huge power supplies. Efficient and effective railguns will come first, and they will probably fill more niches than lasers, but they suffer from things like rapid barrel degradation (the immense forces applied to the projectile are also applied to the rails, causing them to wear down and if fired too much either melt or warp), and the same energy issue as a laser. It takes no electricity to fire a bullet and no external power supply, all the punch needed to accelerate the projectile is stored with it, while railguns require large connected capacitor banks and powerful diesel/gas generators or a nuclear powerplant to produce the juice required to fire them.
Coilguns(gauss guns) are just less efficient railguns, and suffer badly from wasting potential energy in the form of thermal radiation. They have the same external power supply issue, and an even greater chance of melting themselves with prolonged firing.
There are conceptual railguns that fire plasma instead of a metal slug, however their range is probably extremely poor and they would suffer even worse barrel degradation/overheating. A plasma jet or bolt would have to be somehow held together and massive ammounts of energy would probably be wasted just keeping the projectile from dispersing, not to mention that the heat produced by such a weapon would probably kill the person firing it.

Honestly I think that the good old bullet will hang around for quite a while, part of its success comes from its simplicity, it requires no external power supply, you can fire a lot of them without melting your gun, and they're relatively cheap and easy to manufacture in large quantities. Perhaps future bullets will be slightly more complex and sport tiny guidance systems or a miniature explosive, but the current design has already proven extremely successful.

Was having this discussion last night and reached the same conclusion. There are way to many inhibitive factors to the energy based weapons; range, accuracy, degradation, power supplies/demands

It's strange to think of the AR-15 as a platform that will probably only see minor improvements in materials/design, with the majority of the consequential ones being in ammunition and maybe optics

Directed energy weapons that can manipulate a person's body and brain into heart attacks, anaphylactic shock, or horrific hallucinations.

Imagine an invisible ship that can hover about a city and use ultrasound, electrical discharges, and radio waves to give every leader a heart attack instantly and convince every soldier they are in donates inferno.

It would be a paranoid schizophrenics worst nightmare, the scary thing is that DARPA has already made progress on it in the form of radio broadcasters that's can vibrate your inner ear to create "voices in your head" when you walk through the radio signal and computer chips that can control vision when placed in the brain.

People will never use lasers for infantry combat because firing a laser capable of killing someone quickly would blind everyone in the room.

Have you seen how people who fuck around with powerful lasers that can crisp wood and paper have to wear eye protection to avoid injury? Now imagine a laser powerful enough to not only say ignite clothing rapidly, but actually cut through a person (and presumably standard body armor as well) enough to kill someone. The beam itself would probably be invisible except in smoke or dust, however the point where the beam hits would be excruciatingly bright.
