When I was a ranger I was 5'10" and about 140lbs.

Everybody on my team was average, not as skinny as me, but nobody was big. We only had a few big dudes in the whole company.

We had quite a few hobby lifters and fitness geeks in the commo section and supply though.

Olympic and power lifters very frequently have six packs (unless they lift in 105+) you don't want to weigh in with that extra fat it doesn't do anything for you. Of course, the super heavyweights are the strongest. Abs are not just for vanity, core strength is integral to lifting heavy.
>>
>>30994891
/fit/izen /k/ommando, gotta agree here. Your abs are only a matter of your body fat %. Also while its true long distance runners and swimmers typically have low body fat, man do not make any assumptions. Ive had guys with some extra chunk destroy me over <2 mile distances.

Also exercise+diet takes a lot of discipline.

>>
>>31000918
>i'm doing that but you end up just grinding out those reps
yea that's how you get stronger.
strength is what determines how fast you can move something
the more weight you can lift, the faster you can move lighter weight
>>
>>31000983
Thats great i like how you tried to use logic to back up your assertions instead of science.
>>
>>31000999
you're the one who needs help, not me
go lurk /fit/ if you actually want to learn something
>>
>>31000813
Seems like it would depend on what kind of explosive strength you're going for. If you want the strength to hit hard or kick hard then I thinkyou would use different exercises than someone who needs to heave heavy objects or something.

I'm not an expert but I thought most people advocate oly lifts for power? Or maybe get one of those bar speed trackers? Some people like those medicine ball throws too.

>>31000983
>making assertions that run counter to common training logic as if they were no brainers

I like to move heavy weight but lifting a bar over the course of 3 seconds is very different from trying to lift it in 0.5 seconds.

>>31001052
>If you want the strength to hit hard or kick hard then

yeah and i want leg speed and to be able to jump knee pretty high

the concept of crossfit is fine until you actually have a concrete goal you want are in decent shape. if you're a fat sack of shit any exercise will help.

no one who competes in their stupid 'crossfit games' does any sort of workout that even remotely resembles a crossfit WOD. the randomness is a meme to draw in the hipster fucking special snowflakes that are too unique to do regular fucking routines like everyone else.

don't get me wrong, a lot of trainers who also teach crossfit are pretty good, and the group exercise environment it promotes is also good for a lot of people, but the actual 'science' behind crossfit and its claims is pretty retarded and serve to bring in the same trendwhore crowd that supports things like gluten intolerance (NOT CELIAC'S), paleo, and other hipster bullshit.

>>
>>31001277
And here we go again with the "what you're doing is crossfit, you just don't know it" bullshit. There is no clear definition of what is and isn't crossfit. Is Rob Shaul's Military Athlete programming crossfit? What about Mark Twight's Gym Jones? Or SOFLETE? They oftentimes use similar methods for organizing and blocking out workouts, but that's like saying Starting Strength and Smolov are the same because people write the routines in the format of sets x reps. These programs have much more focused and organized structure that aims at building fitness relevant to actual needs, not just getting good times on WODs or becoming extra good at kipping pull-ups.

Furthermore, actual programming from the few good crossfit boxes is quite different from the bullshit in the WODs posted online by CrossFit.com. So whatever flavor of crossfit Delta dudes do is not necessarily the same as what you're going to get if you go to your local box and sign up.
>>

Pretty jelly. I love my beer. Craft beer is where its at.

You should do some sprint work. Not even kidding.

Just dude some 50m and 100m sprints maybe once a week. Do maybe 5 run throughs 1x 70%, 1x 80%, 1x 90%, 2x 100%.

Gives your hammy's a chance to not snap.

I say this because you never know when you really might have to move.

>>
>>31001448
Would someone who has been playing the piano for 6 months call themselves a "regular pianist"? My point being that doing something for 6 months is fucking nothing. If I called myself all kinds of shit because I tried something for six months I would sound a lot more impressive, but I don't see any need to inflate myself by pretending to be something I'm not.

A lot of serious powerlifters have been lifting for literal decades. 6 months into lifting is what most people would consider novice level, not just my opinion. At that timeframe, assuming he didn't just jump into a powerlifting specific routine like a retard, he has yet to try any of the major training methodologies used in powerlifting.

The production part is 20 barrel mashtons, we also have 3 60 barrel fermenters. We do small, tap room only releases on a 5 gallon system, we have 3 of those though. As for lagers, I've actually never fucked with it but I believe it's also a 5 gallon setup.

We have 7 beers we distribute, and a total beer list of about 50 different beers.

Sounds super neat. I'd love to get a big system even a quarter of that size going, even if I had to start my own company. You've pretty much got my dream job, brewing is one of the most relaxing things to do in my opinion. I guess it might be different if you HAVE to do it but its nice to entertain the thought of being able to wake up every morning and go make something that people are going to enjoy.

Oh I run the taproom, I'm not an actual brewer. I help him out though, I'm there for grain out (they just want a strong back I'm convinced) but yeah I'm a front of the house guy. One of the other bartenders made a pineapple hefeweizen, turned out pretty interesting. So, now it's my turn to crank out a brew.

Pic related, the owner is restoring a huey. It's his second one.

Pineapple hefeweizen sounds funky. I don't generally like fruit beers but I love pineapple, I guess it would depend on how sweet it is. On a side note, what is it with beer and helicopters? I know less than half a dozen people who homebrew or are seriously into beer; the guy who got me into brewing was ex-SADF who literally built his own helicopter in his garage and I know a former chopper pilot who now works for a relatively big beer company, now there's your boss and his Hueys.

I can't believe that Americans are so fucking lazy that automatic cars are considered a viable alternative. Probably less than one in every five hundred cars is automatic in other countries. You shouldn't be given a license unless you can drive manual. Someone who can drive manual can drive automatic, but someone who can drive automatic can't necessarily drive manual. What if you needed to drive a friend to hospital in an emergency and all you had was a manual car?

My daily drive was a split 10 eaton fuller, I switched jobs recently and these assholes gave me a fucking automatic.

My personal car is a 6 speed as was the car prior to it.

Driving manual is easy, people just like to claim it is some kind of a skill when its not.

Now floating 10 gears up and down with ease does take a good amount of skill and practice as well as handeling long and heavy loads.

But again any joe off the street can get into a manual car and be off and driving in a matter of minutes with proper instruction.

i'm afraid not. excessive functional strength won't do you any favours in the field.
cardiovascular fitness and stamina is what really matters.
>>
>>31014927
Improving your strength will help, you just need to keep the stamina up.

You don't need to go all bodybuilder on your training, but some functional mass will never be a bad thing.
>>
>>31014927
this desu.
having a 3 plate deadlift is fantastic, but how is it applicable in combat?
your sick lats and juicy quads aren't going to win you a fight.
being able to carry a 55lb rucksack over 20km of varied terrain and still be compos mentis when you reach your destination is what will win a fight.

A 150lb triathlete
>or
A 220lb slab-of-meat olympic lifter

Endurance means jack shit when you're not training your muscles and bones functionally to be strong. Running, humping, and pushups do not make you strong, they don't make you an athlete, and they don't make you any better in combat. All things being equal, someone with a strength base and a good cardiovascular system will murder someone who has just endurance.

Core strength and Cardiovascular fitness is essential.

Secondary to that is arm strength. Gotta carry that weapon for long periods of time. Lower back strength helps for humping your ruck.

Cardiofag here who recently lost like 30 pounds over the last 9 months to get around 9% body fat at around 5 foot 9 manlet 165 pounds. What would you recommend I look for in terms of muscle gain focused trainers as I want to try bulking but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot and be fat again.

I have no crazy unrealistic 'how to get shredded in 4 months or whatever', I just want to have a realistic if slow muscle growth period to increase toning and mass long term while keeping fat low and my runs up. I'm doing 6 mile runs in an hour, going around a 6.7-7.5 minute varied pace with some 4 mph walking.

Dunno if you wanna answer if you are busy or this is something you'd rather be paid for or whatever.

Idk get Americas problem with manual cars.

I had to go to a bunch of dealers and finally to one of those sporty import dealers just to find a selection of non automatic cars.

I drive standard just because it is more enjoyble. I also drive trucks.

Also you can do all the other non driving idiocy while behind the wheel of a manual that people often complian about like not being able to eat, you can eat and shift its not hard.

What the fuck does this retardation even come from? When you're down behind a rock or something poking your head out the amount of body mass you have is nearly irrelevant when it comes to exposure to the enemy,

The ability to function well with a combat load of half your body weight or so and still having the strength to drag your similarly equipped, but wounded comrade into cover and then with the help of another comrade carry him to where he can get medical attention before he bleeds out is invaluable. Sure, it takes some stamina, but you also need to be strong.

also strength transfers over to stamina. muscular endurance is a different beast from cardiovascular endurance

I would definitely look into olympic lifting. It might be hard to find a trainer, and as much as I hate crossfit, some "box" gyms probably have pretty knowledgeable people.
once I hit a max and plateau with powerlifting for a while, I'll cycle into an olympic program to keep my strength but add in the explosiveness of oly. Oly is great because it's very strength-centric but the nature of the training is such that you're getting excellent HIIT-induced cardio training, too

For you, I'd probably do Rippetoe's starting strength for 4-5 months, Wendler's 5/3/1 for two or three, then move into an Oly program (California Strength has some great youtube videos of what they do).
Starting Strength and Practical Programming for Strength Training by Mark Rippetoe and 5/3/1 by Jim Wendler are great resources, especially SS since Rip does a great job describing the movements in a way that it'll be hard to lay yourself up with an injury. Supple Leopard by Kelly Starrett is another great one, too.

Biggest advice I can give you in terms of my personal experience is that the diet is the hardest part; planning your meals makes it a lot easier to make gains without putting on too much fat. People tend to like Leangains, the ACE fitness nutrition handbook is pretty great, too.

hope this helps!

I'm a firm believer in the idea of a /fit/k/, even though I will admit that I've let myself become uncomfortably...ahem, massive (read: fat) in the the name of bulking.

I believe that the first line of defense should always be your body. You are the only weapon that can never be taken away from you. Build it and train it.

I have recently started training with an MMA/TKD guy with a long ass resume and the experience has been eye opening in terms of how to structure immediate response to physical attack. It is important both to have raw strength and raw technique.

As somebody who always assumes any hyptohetical to be stacked against me, I have totally revised my immediate physical responses based on these training sessions and doubled doubled down on my Olympic style weight lifting.

I also ruck regularly, as this is the absolute most used operational skill during operational operating.
