.45-70 is overkill for whitetail, especially in Ohio. Even .44 mag might be pushing it, but it's the best you can do with hunting in a cuck state.

TO OP- 44 mag from a carbine is more than enough for a deer. 357 mag is a fine contender as well. 158gr bullet gets going 2050fps from my 16" levergun. That is almost 1,500 ft/lbs muzzle energy.

Alternatively I like the Sierra pro hunter 300 gn half jackets hollow point with 50 gn of
Reloader 7.

.357 and .44 mags will not disappoint but .45-70 is just something to see.
