This board is for discussing weapons, not for your flavor of "Why are guns relevant? Maybe we should rethink this whole thing and everyone go home guys, we don't need these guns."

REGARDLESS if people did evil things in our nation's past, that does not automatically lump them into a group that we need to ignore on a broad scale and pretend that "this is the future and the past is irrelevant". That is a trap to get you to dump the values and morals of the past that hold this society together.

Go read about the millions of people that have been shot, gassed, electrocuted, burned, starved, tortured, beaten and imprisoned simply because A: they could no longer defend themselves because they had their guns taken away first and B: because they did not agree with an oppressive government or C: because they were deemed to be too intelligent or too independent and thus a threat to a communist government. And let's not forget D: because they believed in God and would not give up their belief in God and worship a government figure.

We need guns because our forefathers warned us that this shit would happen - that if a gov or enemy got too powerful they would try to disarm us first using lies and deceit, and THEN slaughter and/or imprison us. And guess what? Every fucking time it pans out the same way and after the smoke clears the survivors say "wow i wish we would have done something sooner".

And in the midst of this impending problem, you ask the question "why even own a gun"?

While I agree with your post I feel obliged to point out that owning a rifle and/or gun will not allow one "patriotic hero" to overthrow a theoretical, alternate-reality tyrannical America. Even a small militia formed of every NRA member couldn't do it. On a small scale self-defense level, yes, guns are something we can be grateful for, but they will not change the world at a higher level.

I bought one at 18 because I felt as though it was my civic duty. My father told me that owning a firearm was the responsibility of every good US citizen, and that I should purchase one ASAP.

My mother kicked me out of the house for purchasing an AR. Shortly after, I bought a gamut of rifles in a "fuck you," maneuver.

A few years later, Sandy Hook happened, and I sold a few of my rifles and made about a 40% profit. Since then, I've collected rare and interesting firearms and made a good sum of money finishing rifles for the uninitiated and doing private sales.

I own a rifle to protect myself, my family, my loved ones, to target shoot, to hunt, to protect myself from tyranny, and because I just like them. I'm a mechanical engineering student and I like physics. Shooting a gun and hitting a target is a fun physics problem that involves a level of skill and intuition to do properly that can only come with practice, discipline, and good technique. The guns themselves are mechanical wonders. There's a ton of neat designs and new, innovative designs are being developed and being produced all the time. Not to mention the history behind firearms and their applications in military science...It's all just really fascinating stuff.

For fun. I started collecting guns that I thought were cool in movies and videogames and expanded from there.

I'll still use the self defense argument against people that want to take my shit, but truthfully there are much better options out there to defend myself/family/etc. than what I own. Thankfully only other gunowners would know that and they don't care about people collecting for the sake of it.
