#4 buck is probably good enough for inside the home.

Anything else and I would want 00. You're more likely to hit with 4, but I'm weary about the penetration at the edge of the effective range of a shotgun. Shot isn't the best ballistically at 40 or 50 meters, so I think 4 could have problems with thick clothing. Not sure about it though, haven't seen any ballistic tests.

I know, get a rifle or use a slug. I'm just talking about if you had to use buck.

I would just go with all 00 buck. Readily available in all sorts of loads, affordable, and if you actually hit your target I don't think overpenetration would be a problem.
