No one to guide them, remember that anything camo in movies is military for Hollywood. You have movies like Lone Survivor and American Sniper which had the actual guys have an input on gear used, especially Lone Survivor if I remember correct.

This. Honestly, they won't even hire some dude off the street who knows how a uniform is supposed to look. Instead, they choose to represent our servicemembers like this:

Probably the most egregious example I remember seeing, was "Instant Justice", which just fucked up Marine Corps uniforms left and right. No doubt because the director didn't care, and didn't care to get permission from the DoD anyway.
