Couldn't. I have a heart condition, and the Army said they wouldn't take me because I'm a tad on the heavy side and with a heart murmur they thought it'd be risky.

No regrets, just wish life had worked out a bit differently since a lot of my friends from work are veterans anyways.

I'm a computer scientist, and the US military's tech is supposed to be a nightmare. I suspect I'd hate the work, find a lot of it wasteful, learn little to nothing, and get paid too little. I feel elitist joining the academic illuminati, but I think that's where I can make the biggest contribution.

There are many other ways to serve your country aside from military service. A writer or musician contributes as much if not more than your average soldier, just in a different way.

As I was growing up, my father (Nam Vet), unconsciously poisoned me against the military. He didn't really mean to, but he had a lot of resentment and baggage from his own time in.

I think even though he knew things were different in peace time, he couldn't separate his own experiences from the concept of the military. So for most of my life, my view of the service was colored by his experiences in Nam.

By the time I had enough experience with people in the modern military to get a different opinion of it, I was already too old to join. Sometimes I regret that a little, but I'm pretty happy with who I am now.

Since the war in Mali it's been relatively *stable*, but if shit goes down in Tunisia and Algeria that's going to be tough.

Plus the traditional ground troups for places that have a tendency to blow up politically (like Côté d'Ivoire recently).
