I thought the same, but it's actually not too difficult if you really want a gun in Germany. Just ask uncle Google for the next shooting range, you'll see there are far more of them than you might think. A lot of them have a gun club, for people how want to shoot 9mm and bigger, not just like a Schützenverein. Yes you will have to pay for the membership, but if you really want a gun you'll have to invest some money, no good hobby is cheap. Then you have a year to shoot with the club's guns, make your Sachkunde until you can buy your own firearm. You don't want to buy a new one from the factory, just find out if anyone in the club or at your range wants to sell something. The chance that there is someone selling his gun because of his age is not too unlikely.
Yes, it's a lot of work, but you'll have a gun and loads of fun.

As somebody who just got the Sachkunde stuff done, no, it really isn't.
Sure, it takes some time and it's not as cheap as it could be, but it's easier than most people think.
The biggest problem imo is the year-long membership requirement but it's not like you can't shoot during that time.
And in the long run a year isn't that bad.
