Luck of draw of the draw. I know a guy who was walking about 5 yards behind someone who stepped on a landmine and he took shrapnel to the neck/shoulder that landed him in the hospital for two months. Incredibly the guy who stepped on the mine got blown up, like literally blown up in the air, but he took no shrapnel and wasn't even seriously injured.

But in theory the smaller the shrapnel produced the smaller the danger area.

An M67 grenade (modern US Army grenade) has a kill radius of 5 meters and casualty causing radius of 15 meters.

So if you got 15 feet away your odds of surviving go up dramatically.

60 mm mortars have a casualty radius of 30 meters

120 mm mortar has a 50 meter casualty radius.

The 155 artillery shell has a massive 100 meter casualty radius.

Just saying that a frag on flat ground is likely to have shrapnel blow up and out away (path of least resistance). Being on the ground, near the blast, may not be as fatal or suicidal as is thought.

Just think back to that video a little while ago from Syria, (think it was Deir Ezzor) where two sides were exchanging frags over a hill with them blowing right next to them.

Shrapnel is can be more deadly than bullets. Most rounds are not designed to splinter or fragment inside a body (the worst wounds are from this) while shrapnel is usually a piece of debris not streamlined for accuracy but a rock or some shit that's not stable before it even hits you.

Once you pass 10ft your chances of being hit by grenade shrapnel is tiny, even more so if you go prone. Not that its impossible, grenades launch shrapnel in pretty much random directions.

shrapnel goes along the same philosphy as the .223 adoption, if you kill a person they lay there dead, if you injure a person then 2 people have to carry him out of combat. its a 3:1 win, so spreading shrapnel can take more enemies out of the fight cause it doesn't ususally result in instant death, ie "he caught some shrapnel" gernades are fucking loud, like really loud, even if you didnt get hit if it goes off near you then you are going to be fucked up for awhile.
