This is an assault rifle, according to:
>American heritage dictionary
>Webster dictionary
>Oxford dictionary
>Dictionary.com
>44th president
>45th president

This is not an assault rifle according to:
>The US army
>NRA

So who knows more about what words mean, the NRA, or the dictionary?
>>
>>30945141
The dictionary qualifies the meaning of words based on popular usage.

That is what people use the term to describe, even if it is, in fact, false.

>Brought to you by the people who made "selfie" official.
>>
>>30945147
This really gets me down..
The word decimated is a great example of this.
>>
>>30945147
If people use the word to describe it, that's what the word means
>>
>>30945149
Because people use it to mean "completely wiped out" instead of "killing one tenth of them?"

Such is language, and it's not at all immune to politics. Naturally, the dictionary companies are academics, who tend to lean left, so it's really unsurprising that they were eager to toss a biased "assault rifle" def into the mix.
>>
>>30945156
That... was my point.
Even if you're wrong, popular usage trumps accurate or technical nomenclature.

Much like people saying "hard drive" when they mean "tower" in reference to computers.
>>
>>30945141
>The US army
>This is not an assault rifle
Good enough for me
>>
>>30945147
Or the "laughing crying emoji"
>>
>>30945141
Isn't select fire a defining feature of an assault rifle? I am confused, is every semi-automatic intermediate cartridge rifle an assault rifle now?
>>
>>30945141
You forgot on the "not" side
>Wikipedia
So it's a bit of a toss up
>>
>>30945470
bait
>>
>>30945141
>who knows more about words
Dictionaries, which are by definition descriptive rather than strictly prescriptive and lack technical knowledge of the subject in most cases
>who knows more about guns
Guess.

Which one do you want making decisions about gun policy?
>>
>>30945149
I purposely don't use that word unles i literally mean 1/10
>>
>>30945170
wow you really are a fag.
>>
>>30945170
People who say "Kleenex" when referring to tissue paper in general really grinds my gears, because a Kleenex is always at least two-ply, and some generic tissue papers are only single-ply.
>>
>>30945170
So that means an AR-15 being called an "assault rifle" in common usage isn't wrong.
>>
>>30945141
Dictionary.com has the definition as

>a military rifle capable of both automatic and semiautomatic fire, utilizing an intermediate-power cartridge.

So put it in the not

Googles definition
>a lightweight rifle developed from the sub-machine gun, which may be set to fire automatically or semi-automatically.

Puts it in the maybe depending on how you interprete 'or'
>>
>>30945542
What the fuck!
>>
>>30945141

Who knows more about guns, the people who write dictionaries or the people who use guns professionally
>>
>>30945141
Thanks for Correcting the Record! 25¢ has been deposited in your account and /k/ has been so eternally BTFO were all on our way to surrender our guns to the cops now. Wow!

You know guys, it's time.
>>
>>30945542
We get that you type always have to bring it up, but could you fags do it without the porn next time?

It's pretty fucking disgusting.
>>
>>30945491
I'm sorry I've offended you by explaining how the dictionary works.

>>30945508
Not according to the dictionary, which again is an interpretation of colloquial use, catalogued for reference.

We /k/ folks, and those in the gun community, know an "assault rifle" is generally defined as a reasonably compact, select-fire rifle in an intermediate caliber.

But, language is defined by its use, whether we like it or not.
>>
>it's a preaching to the choir episode
>>
>>30945730
You're not wrong but in legal terms words are defined by authorities not common usage. 'Assault rifle', in this context, is always select-fire with an intermediate cartridge. 'Assault weapon' varies by jurisdiction but is usually based on a feature list with things like a pistol grip, flash hider and ""high"" capacity magazine.

Sage for obvious bait/shill thread.
>>
>>30945504
Dude...
Dude.......
Nothing should ever be single-ply.
I would form a political party based solely on this.

Well, this and the direction toilet paper rolls should hang.
>>
>>30945766
Oh, I'm with you, but OP is relating dictionary definitions as what qualifies the rifle in common parlance.

Linguistics at play... so... you know, roll with it.

Is this a bait/shill thread, or just a Dorkus Malorkus walking among us? Dunno.

However,

>Courtesy sage of agreement.
>>
>>30945141

OP lies. Straight from American Heritage Dictionary , his cited first source:

1. A rifle that has a detachable magazine and is capable of both automatic and semiautomatic fire, designed for individual use in combat.

Who knows more about the classification of weapons, the army, or a person who wrote that 'literally' "means" 'figuratively' just because a bunch of dumb people misuse it that way?

That is an assault rifle, according to:
>people who know nothing about guns

That is not an assault rifle according to:
>people who know something about guns

After all, it is the...

Didn't the same dictionaries put a fucking emoji in them?

Actual definitions > definitions dictated by muh feels
>>
>>30945141
>So who knows more about what words mean, the NRA, or the dictionary?
"Literally" is LITERALLY in the dictionary as "not literally."

What do you think?
>>
>>30945512

To me, it sounds like the Google definition uses "may be set" to mean the same thing as "may be switched".
>>
>>30945141
The people who don't use it and know little about it names it something its not... more news at 10!
>>
>>30945141
I think the firearms experts would know better.

>>30945141

Even though I think bringing up dictionary definitions in situations like this is weak, you are wrong, no dictionary that isn't urban says that about literally.
>>
>>30945141
Is that all just powder residue on the barrel/FSB?
>>
>>30945141
This is an assault rifle, as defined as
>A group of linguistics experts
>Another group of linguistics experts
>A websight
>A cuck
>A figure of my imagination

This is not an assault rifle according to:
>A nations armed forces
>An organization who's entire existance is built around firearms

Wow tough choice.
>>
>>30945141

It's also not a assault rifle to the DoD.
>>
>>30945147

Most dictionaries no longer consider police to be civilians even though, legally speaking, they unambiguously are.
>>
>>30945170
Huh? Who the fuck does that? What do you even mean by tower? The case or the case w/ guts?
>>
>>30945141
its an assault rifle get the fuck over it its meant to storm with a soldier on ASSAULTS stay mad triggerfags
>>
>>30948341
Idiots do that.
Less so, now that computing is done more infrequently via an actual desktop, and more with portable/mobile devices.

Having worked computer grunt retail in the late 90s and early 2000s, know-nothing know-it-alls would frequently refer to the tower/case(yes, with guts) as the "hard drive."
>>
>>30945473
Wikipedia's got autistic editors who cite obscure sources from 1977 when the meaning of the word only changed in 1995 at the earliest.

>Hitler makes up propaganda term for mp44 that sounds cool and edgy
>People use it for everything that kinda sorta looks and works like mp44
>Someone somewhere decides upon an arbitrary definition that includes necessary full auto (or burst fire, because the US army is simultaneously too stupid to train their soldiers to use full auto yet too stubborn to admit they're fielding a castrated version)
>Libtards jump on the term because beside being cool and edgy, it sounds kinda menacing to libtard ears
>Gunfags defend arbitrary definitions partly because they want to stick it to the libtards, partly because they think calling a rifle by a different name changed the legal implications and partly because they're autistic spergs

The mechanical difference between a "semi automatic modern sporting rifle" and an "assault rifle" is two metal chips by the way.
>>
It's a carbine by FUNCTION

not by what some fat middle age mom has to say about it

The only thing gun grabbers assault is logic

In the dictionary, the word Literally can be used to mean Figuratively.

If I took a glock and convinced everyone to call it a sniper rifle, the dictionary would have to change the meaning of sniper rifle to fit the glock.
>>
>>30949442
How is calling a glock a sniper rifle unreasonable

>It's rifled
>it's used by snipers
A rifle is a term originally used to describe firearms with rifled barrels, it arbitrarily came to describe non-shotgun long guns.
