>I still will never buy a 100% US AK though.

I'd buy one if they were built and sold correctly. Problem is nobody is producing domestic CHF CL AK barrels (that I know of) and mating them to properly built US-parts traditional style AKs and selling them for what you'd pay for a Bulgarian arsenal. It's all a mash of old parts kits and button rifled barrels.

I hate to say it but the US aks will be the budget rifles now what with fucking WASRS selling for $700+ and your average SLR-107 going for $1200 used,

At least the 5.45 market has been stable.

Hello friends :3
>>
>>30940967
About as much. There are variations and non mil-spec models, kind of like civilian buffer tubes and ruger delta rings on ARs.

If you have a triangle folder cut receiver you have to use a triangle stock, if you have an under folder cut receiver you have to use an under folder. If you get a standard fixed stock model you have the most options for stocks because you can get an adapter that will run anything including AR stocks, but it sticks out an inch because of the rear tang. You can cut the tang and put an ace adapter and it won't stick out an inch, but you can never go back to fixed stocks.

Fore ends are pretty much universal, except saiga and veprs use an extended fore end that is screwed into the receiver, sort of like a free float AR. You can add a retaining plate and run the short, standard handguard, but I'd consider that a downgrade desu.

Also veprs and zastavas have to use specific stocks, but if you get an adapter again you open up a lot of stock options. CNC warrior and ace make the best adapters.

All grips are universal to my knowledge. In short to answer your question no they're not all the same spec but they make adapters that make them so.

>tfw took this pic one year ago yesterday
I've been digging around on my computer and finding old pics I forgot I took
>>
>>30941156
>but they make adapters that make them so.
EXCEPT if you have an underfolder or triangle AK, then you can't swap. The method of doing that is to make specific fitting cuts into the receiver. The AK100 stocks (best stocks) use the same cut as the triangle, so those you can swap.

If you want a triangle but still want modularity, use the CNC warrior adapter. This leaves the tang so you can go back to fixed stocks. If you don't want that inch sticking out the back cut the tang and use an ACE adapter, it will allow you to use just about as many stocks as the CNC warrior.

If you want an AK100 style stock but don't want to drop $200 I had the idea of fitting and screening a standard fixed stock onto an adapter.
>>
>>30940967

>Are ak's as customizable as ar15s?

Not really.

>If I buy any random folding stock will it fit on any ak?

Make sure parts are compatible with your AK before you spend money on them.

>>30941037

They're still button rifled though, which is a downer, but there's not a whole lot PSA can do about that. I'm sure there's a huge market for these rifles though, especially now that "just buy a WASR" isn't really applicable for a while.

>>
>>30943602
The original batch had headspace issues. I believe they recalled them. Theyre on gen 2 now.

They seem to be keeping it cheap but doing it right. The palmetto way is to outsource to other companies that have the proper machining (probably lowest bid) then put it all together in house. So they may not have their own 10,000 ton steel press but they contacted someone that does and they get the receiever flats done by them, then they get the gas block billet, etc and just have the small tools needed to put the pieces together. It's genius really, if they were able to do some higher bidding they could get some really high quality stuff made, but you probably wouldn't buy it because $$$. It also seems like their quality control sucks, everything is blemished but they may be buying some other company's unwanted parts and selling them second hand. We'll see how well that fares in the testing.

It's expensive because of where its from, not it's quality. Zenit is like the Russian tapco, yet we jump to put it on our rifles because muh authenticity. Meanwhile spetsnaz jumps to put tapco and other American parts on their rifles. Have you seen the spetsnaz alfa squad's AKs? They have a TWS top rail and a tapco handguard. American optics are probably popular too.

I have a gen 2 PSAK47
Aint had any issues with functionality so far. Then again I've only put maybe 400 rounds though it.
I got their barreled reciever than bought their kit to build the rest. Along with hogue furniture and a bumpski stock.
The pistol grip screw that initially came with their build kit had a fucked thread and only threaded half way. Didnt matter cause I had an extra and ended up swapping for a hogue grip anyways.
I also had to dremel a tiny bit off the front of the top cover to get it to fit. Not too big of a deal, it's a tight fit, almost too tight.

I've never used one myself, but based on photographs and some reading I believe it's not worth the price unless you want the "authentic" optic. If I wanted a top of the line red dot, I would've bought another T-2, but what I wanted was a unique, cool, Slavic optic, so I went with the PK-AS. If you want it, buy it, but it won't be as good as an Aimpoint.

No. The hammer would ride the back of the bolt carrier as it was coming forward and chambering another round and cause a failure to fire if you did that. Making an AK full auto actually requires a few specific parts and some knowledge on gunsmithing.

hey guys, I'm thinking of converting a 7.62x39 VEPR. seems like an easy process, seems I only need to replace the mag trunnion to accept STANAGs, buy an AK grip and stock set and their conversion kits. Is that right? won't need more than a drill and vice right? also, is the muzzle threaded? that end piece screws right off right?
>>
>>30947485

So youre just gonna grap the charging handle mid cycle? Stick your finger behind the trigger? Cut the rope?

And yes it kinda works like bump fire, but you press the trigger and it dumps the whole mag.

It looks like the carabiner at the back acts as the new "trigger" as it were. And tension is released on the trigger with each shot, so if you release tension on the string it should stop cycling

I like my VZ. It's lighter and slimmer, and you can use dem clips. The 2008 is actually decent quality for the price point, wouldn't have it as a dedicated shtf gun though. It seems fine for truck gun use, but if I wanted the vz58 platform as a dedicated go-to gun I'd get a czechpoint.

>>30947485
>Wouldn't that just be an elaborate bump fire since the trigger would have to be pulled once per shot?
Even though the BATFE walked back their ruling that a string is a machine gun, I still believe they consider it to be an illegal modification and not a bumpfire mechanism.

I'm not gonna be the test case.
>>
>>30947613
Yeah, I wouldn't want to be either.
I've always wondered why they never made a small motor that fit on a trigger guard and just pulled the trigger at a set rate, but I guess it would fall into the same category
>>
>>30947560
I disagree with your assessment.

Looks like the carabiner is just an anchor for the string. You pull the trigger once, and the charging handle's motion pulls the trigger again after each cycle.

That said, you could be right, it just depends on how much tension is on that string.

I'm pretty sure a few companies tried to do that and they were, as you deduced, deemed machine gun conversions and illegal.
>Here's the ATF walkback about the string.
So while the string itself is no longer considered the "machinegun component", looping it around the trigger does "convert" the firearm into a machinegun.

Sup /akg/, I'm in a bit of a dilemma, if you guys could give me some advice.
I am about to buy my first rifle and I've shot both ARs and AKs, I prefer shooting AKs but ARs are cool too.
The AK I want is ~$1200 (a NIB SLR106) while I could get an AR for sub $800 and have a pretty good setup for less than I would spend on the AK total.
I am a student with a okay amount of money to my name and little to no debt, but as a student I shouldn't spend so much in general.
Should I just go for an AR?

Then get what you want, otherwise keep saving for it. Don't buy something because you feel forced to. I prefer my AK much more now that I have it, but it is much more expensive in today's America

Yep, have already dealt with that myself. I've got a half baked idea for how to legally get around that though, after Obongo's EOs getting an FFL 08 is gonna be a little bit harder, especially with the fucking 3000 dollar ITAR tax
>>
>>30950283
You don't need ITAR to import parts/mags.

Source: I have an 08 and import mags all the time.

Your big problem with mags out of Russia is that Izhevsk will get denied 9/10 times, so you basically play form 6 roulette. Tulas will be fine if worded correctly.
Next is that most sellers in Russia don't actually have proper authority to export dual use goods, which is why they break them into parts.

It's such a fucking hassle that I often just have other people buy them into other countries so I can have them exported from there.
That's why there's so much room for guys to do these under the table shipments like you see on /k/ and the files. I completely support them, too, because fuck all that bureaucratic trash.
>>
>>30950378
ITAR tax since the latest EO if I recall though, unless that was only related to manufacturing and not import, since it used to be export only. Also GETTING an FFL 08 now that kitchen counter FFLs are dead, I've got an 05 but can I tack on an 08 without hassle?
>>
>>30950404
It's just for manufacturing.

It would be easier if you already have an 05, but still somewhat unlikely. I also hear the wait time on them nowadays is 6months to a year. You'll need AECA registration as well.
It's a lot of investment of money and time just to have them tell you "lol no russia" while someone else with connections gets their f6 approved.

I'm fortunate enough to have the cell numbers of most of the higher ups at ATF, so I can sometimes slide it through with some spin.
>>
>>30950458
Damn, shitty. It's still a ways off since poorfag with little time anyways, I imagine by the time I really figure it out the situation will have changed for the better or worse. Thanks for the insight tho man
>>
>>30950492
Yeah, it's really not a poorfag kinda game.
There's a big gap where the smaller sellers that have something you want to import don't have the licensing/ability to export and the big guys won't give you the time of day without big orders.

When people ask me, I usually tell them to be able to spend 100k or don't bother.

Something that's been on my mind /akg/.

With AR's, there seems to be this obsession with making sure your rifle isn't overgassed. There are options for adjustable gas blocks, different length gas systems, heavier springs, heavier buffers, and other related options to make sure your rifle isn't subjecting itself to excessive wear and tear from having too overgassed of a system.

But for an AK, there isn't nearly as much of a focus on that, if at all. I keep hearing that the AK platform is inherently an overgassed one, but nobody ever seems to make so much of a fuss about it. Why is that?

And if possible, I'd like an answer that isn't "AVTOMAT OF KALASHNIKOVA NOT HOLD IN GAS LIKE WHORE AMERICAN WOMAN, IT LET OUT GASEOUS EXPULSIONS LIKE GLORIOUS FARTS OF THE PROLETARIAT!"

Because the AR has been taken over by the hyper competitive three gun community in which every single microsecond and molecule of weight matters and by the tacticool mall ninjas who dump thousands of dollars on accessories for their gun and put maybe 100 rounds through it a year, and they both put an enormous autistic emphasis on things that frankly do not matter

I love my AR but the US market for ARs is saturated with expensive pointless shit and it makes me distance myself from the AR camp because of that. The AK remains (to a degree depending on who you're talking to) a simple rifle that doesn't need the bells and whistles that 9/10 ARfags believe a rifle "needs" in order for it to be a "modern" combat rifle (not that they'd ever see combat but that's their mindset). Your AR is overgassed? Is crooked in some way? Throws brass not in the correct angle? Spend money on a things to fix it and/or bitch about it on Arfcom. Your AK has any of those things? Who cares as long as it works, properly zeros, and doesn't have shit quality parts that will destroy themselves (like cast trunnions and peening bolt carriers).

tl;dr 9/10 AR owners live in a fantasy world where extremely unlikely things are bound to happen specifically to them so they need the absolute perfect rifle with all the latest bells and whistles while 9/10 AK owners simply enjoy the rifles for what they are and don't sweat the small things that don't make much of an issue

If you have a slant back AK receiver, what options exist to replace a crapcan stock?

Pic is very related - RPK style receiver.

If you post a reply, do so with one that is stock.

I've had good luck with "30 rd. Magazines for Saiga and AK style rifles". If you explicitly say AK47, AKM, or AK74, it will likely not make it through. Don't lie, just be very general.

The guys I know of have done things ranging from mixing the izzys in on the bottom to claiming some bullshit on the F6 like "no way to know for sure where it was made because of outsourcing production in the USSR :^))))"

ATF doesn't actually check every shipment, even large ones. Didn't even crack open my last shipment of 20k.
It's just an expensive gamble to make with larger quantities.

Stock adapter answers appreciated, but surely someone makes a FUCKING SLANT STOCK that will fit an RPK style receiver.

Archangel make a stock that will, but I don't want to bolt an aluminum stock [or adapter] to the back of steel RPK if I can find a polymer or steel alternative.

Bolting aluminum to steel has the nasty galvanic corrosion issue.

Ironwood designs was working on one.
Not sure if they finished the design, and it doesn't appear to be on their site.
But you could send an email to them and see what they say.

>Matt from Ironwood Designs posted this in another forum:

"Also posted below is our new AKM butt stock for VEPR angle cut. No need for an adapter as the stock fits the receiver as it sits.
Part shown was an earlier test cut, and does not show the pistol grip relief cut, and does not show the sides of the front of the stock
trimmed down, closer to the receiver side surfaces.

This new AKM VEPR butt stock can be ordered at any time. We have yet to post it on the site, as I am waiting to do large scale site additions
after we have new, better pics. We will also be working on a std. AKM lower hand guard for VEPR, as I am aware of a lower HG conversion retaining
cap, so hang tight for those parts as well."

Not a huge fan of my father's VZ2008. I've shot a decent number of rounds through it and dislike it more than both my AKM and my AK74. Is it a neat gun? Yes. Was it a good buy back when it was $400? A steal, really. Now a days? They're more expensive so you could possibly gain money in the sale, but no matter what you're not going to have enough to buy an AK worth having (personal opinion).

I'd go ahead and sell it just because I don't find them as fun or comfortable to shoot as AKMs, but if you enjoy it then why sell it?

Significant variations in the AR's cartridge load and bullet weights, not to mention widely differing variations in its configuration, require options to adjust the gas system, or at least mitigate an already overgassed system.

Most AK's are going to be pretty uniform, have the same length gas system, and the cartridges are generally going to be the same weight and powder charge, which will generally not be as high of a pressure as 5.56x45 anyway. There isn't much that needs to be adjusted.

They would look better but it would add more weight to the rifle, thus losing one of the few advantages it truly has for the sake of cross-compatibility. I wouldn't trade a 100% working vz2008 for any common $500-600 ak. I think they're nicer in a lot of small ways, like their weight/size, especially if you have both the fixed/folder stocks on hand to switch out at will.
If you want dat ak, I'd sooner consider selling it and putting that money towards an arsenal or something where you have all the modern ak features like folding stock(not nearly as quick and easy to deploy as the vz) and ak-74 style brake. Or just towards a legit vz.
My cz vz58 is my #1 gun by a long shot, but I've used a friend's vz2008 enough to have an opinion. And the legit vz is quite a bit nicer all around and you shouldn't draw any conclusions on the vz58 from anything you find misfitted on the vz2008. But they do the basic task of shooting equally well if you remove the slant brake from the vz2008. I was clanking my 400 yard steel just the same with GT ammo, it was hitting feet up and right(IIRC) when the slant was on.
>>
>>30956792
Not calling you a liar, but I find it difficult to believe that the brake would affect point of impact since the impulse on the brake from the gas wouldn't really begin until after the bullet has left the barrel.

Call me whatever you want, but I'm NEVER going to allow a slant brake to be on a gun of mine from this point forward.
I wouldn't have thought it would effect it so bad either. But I could see where the dust was kicking up on the first 5 or 10 shots out there.
We unscrewed the brake, and clank clank clank clank clank, and the impacts were all pretty near each other.
From video I've seen(not specifically with aks), some gas does often escape ahead of the bullet and I'd have to assume that gas screws with the bullet since slant brakes don't channel it evenly. It seems to me like it could push on the bullet a bit because of that.

Use the correct one from the start, never buy an svd scope for an ak. I guess you can buy an adapter to make it right like pic related, but this was mainly worth it when svd mount scopes were 100 bucks each, so I got a scope setup I liked better than any posp I've pwmed for cheap.

To the I.O. Inc haters...

You.
Yes, you. The one screaming, "They're overgassed!" and "Uli Wiegand lied to us!" and other slurs I dare not mention.
Tread lightly.
You are one. We are hundreds, thousands. Millions. You aren't just IN the minority; you ARE the minority.
I don't feel awkward or anxious shooting my I.O. AKs around others, and your words don't affect me. Many others, however, are coming out of their shells for the first time in their lives. This is the first time many are enjoying the beautiful world of guns that has been manufactured for us by I.O. - and it IS beautiful. Incredibly so. DON'T ruin this for them. We I.O. owners may have our differences, but we will not hesitate to come to the aid of our fellow enthusiasts, especially against someone who so virulently slurs that which has brought us all together.
Don't take this the wrong way. I don't hate you. I don't fear you.
I pity you.
I'm sorry that you feel this way towards us. I'm sorry that I.O. Inc is such a bane to your existence. And I'm sorry that you are missing out on such a wonderful experience. Mostly, though, I'm sorry that you feel the need to go around and publicly chastise and berate others. I'm sorry that, to ensure your own validity, you need to make others feel invalid. I'm sorry that your self-worth is so infinitesimally miniscule that you have to make others feel less-than-human, at least in your own denatured mind, just to feel whole. I am truly sorry that day-in and day-out you have to put up with your worthless, meaningless, Shakespearean tragedy of a life.
I ask you politely to cease your unnecessary cries for attention, and instead invite you to join our ranks. Throw away your WASR, buy an I.O. Inc AK, and breathe in the splendour and the amazement of your first round fired, and then, maybe, just maybe, you'll see what you've been so hopelessly searching for this whole time.

I can only speak for pso/posps, since that's the look I like. I've used romanian surplus 4x24, posp 6x24, and posp 8x48. Pic related. And I'd never suggest a x48 scope because they're just too heavy and bulky.
My main preference(also they used to be only 100 bucks) is the romanian pso scopes and an adapter if needed. Even without the price difference, I like them better than posps I've used. I have them on 4 rifles now, and have ditched my posps. I love the 54r bdc built into the top turret, it seems to work fine with smaller calibers too within a few hundred yards.
At this point, I'd just get a 4 or 6x24 posp with an ak mount. Preferably one meant specifically for 762x39 if you shoot that caliber.
I've come to love the 4x most of all because I never lose sight of my target when I fire, and I have a huge field of view. I can definitely see why the commies made 4x the military standard for their DMRs. It's plenty of zoom to do the job and lets you see a lot of ground.

7.62x39 is not a good "dmr" candidate. Start over

Generally, you want a 23.3" rpk length barrel to get the look right.
But seriously, even a 16in barrel will do you just fine up to 400 yards. I use 4x optics and it works just fine.
Just use ammo like golden tiger proven to actually reach full 762x39 velocities from a 16in barrel. Also, I find it to be pretty dead accurate for 25c/r ammo.

Lel, no.
How does that 6" barrel extension look anything like that 4 prong?

It looks like something like this to me

>>30958855
He was talking specifically about 7.62x39 not being a DMR.
The M76 and SVD are clearly not in that caliber.
>>

Precisely.

I mean you could attempt to accurize an AKM for the role, but you're still limited by the cartridge itself.

>why not scope an AK-74?
>why not seek out a legit bloc DMR?
>what are you gaining with the extra barrel length? 60ft/s?
>why?

Just because Iraq couldn't afford to produce new magazines, tooling for barrels, ammunition for a proper DMR, doesn't mean that the Tabuk idea is good.

*See those little nubs on the end in the picture?

If you really don't think it's a four prong though, maybe something in pic attached.

It does look like the end of that phantom.
Still don't think it's a 4 prong though.
But without a better resolution pic, we're just throwing guesses out anyway.
No harm in that.
