So why does South Africa have such a hard-on for wheeled vehicles again?
>>
France does too.

They work and don't wear out as fast as tracks.

For different reasons. SA isn't shipping/airlifting their vehicles overseas. It helps that SA and nearby are mostly much drier than the parts of West Africa France is often seen in(Chad aside, of course), meaning tracks aren't as needed unless you have an assload of mass to spread out.
>>
>>30940253
many reasons why tracked vehicles are superior to tracked in some circumstances, the only reason to have tracks is if you expect to go in very heavy terrain. Although an 8x8 can go through some pretty nasty terrain aswell, mind you.
>>
>there are no vendors who sell 3mm miniatures of South African vehicles

I mean I'd make my own but it's such a pain in the ass

Developed for the long plains of Angola. Land is dry and flat which makes wheeled vehicles fine.

Supposedly they are looking for wheeled IFV with 105mm gun (whether they're using MBT gun or low pressure gun is still to be debated) as a replacement for Olifant tank under project Aorta

While mobility and ease of maintenace is quoted as the primary consideration, I'd suspect that SA simply has lost much of its technical expertise (decrepit infrastructure, plenty of engineers already fucked off to either europe, middle east or SEA countries, lowering standards in university and whatnot) as well as the economic base to produce one.

The only way they can get a proper Olifant replacement is by doing joint venture with another country or getting other tanks and localize for SA needs. I heard they were interested with leopard 2 but shit went cold when SA went into economic crisis. Prolly they would get chinese type-98 or VT-4 now that China is pushing for closer economic cooperation with SA

I heard once it was for landmine resistance. Tires can be made to be run-flat, but even if they're destroyed completely, you only lose one or two tires versus losing a tread which would mobility-kill a tracked vehicle.
>>
>>30940253
wheeled vehicles work best on roads. I don't understand it either.

>Prolly they would get chinese type-98 or VT-4 now that China is pushing for closer economic cooperation with SA

Or a shit load of surplus ZTZ-96 as China slowly replaces them with the -98/-99 series.

Wat
>>
>>30940500

>heavy terrain

As I understand it, tracked vehicles are good at moving a lot of weight on a flat surface with relative ease, stepper the incline, harder it gets.

Wheeled vehicles, and their suspension, tackle relatively "rough" terrain with ease.

Which is why we need to build tanks with four treads.

It's the ultimate in tactical mobility. Totally unstoppable by any terrains. It could take an RPG hit and lose a track, and STILL have maneuverability and keep fighting.
