SAS have gone out there loaded for bear.

If you look over all the reports of the shit they've been pulling that make it to the media they're loading around everything and the kitchen sink. AW50 anti-material rifles, sexy sexy AI AWMs, newly upgraded C8 carbines, Dan .338 rifles, Javelins, AT4s, M2s, GMGs, crates of bar mines, Gurkha knives, Toyota Land Cruisers modified by British company Jankel, quadbikes and as of this week in reports, even fucking XM25's.

This is the shit they live for. Freedom, wide expanses, fast vehicles and authority to just raid the shit out of anything they can find.

Here's a few reports that have surfaced. Usual caviats apply, it's impossible to say for sure about anything when it comes to special forces of any side, but what the hell, it's fun.

It's very likely just a specialist order for the UKSF and got a few of them. Fuck knows really, it's hardly a Regimental decision, when it comes that that sort of stuff they'll take whatever they want or prefer.

The AI AX.338 is INCREDIBLY sexy though. Would want to see in an operator guise if only for the pictures.

They've been in syria for years.
There's a YPG video from at least 2 years ago where they are attacking an ISIS held oil refinery and you can see guys with suppressed C8s and sniper rifles, and can hear the british accents, one of them's even wearing a desert ghillie suit.
can't be bothered finding it now but i definitely seen it.

Special Forces Support Group have been on the ground in Syria recently, obviously SAS have a presence there as part of their whole anti-ISIS/AQ efforts, not likely to see any SBS given that they are running everything in Afghanistan now, Pathfinders also may have a role here, but I can't imagine long range reconnaissance being high on their priorities, and even if it is I can imagine SRR being handed the task instead given the increased secrecy.

Either way they look nails and I'm sure are fucking shit up, I know a couple blokes in SFSG and he said ISIS like to film them with drones, then hit them with mortars, they brought Anti-Drone weapon systems but didn't specify what it was.

UKSF was using the M16a2 for fucking years, then the SA80 was given to the pathfinders in Sierra Leone, and during a major contact with enemy, almost every single rifle failed to fire due to the heat, and the platoon in contact had only their L7's and support weapons to fight with, after that it was banned for SF use and they fucked with a load of different bits of kit until the C8 was officially chosen, which is proving so good the rest of the army airborne now wants it.

What can I say? LRDPG love runs deep, anon.

In serious, it's the type of vehicle virtually every special forces group uses in this sort of mission statement. Light, long range, bolt on whatever kit you need, easy to get in and out, inconspicuous, spare parts from any mechanic in the country you're in, hella reliable and great vision.

What I'd give to see the Jackals get out into Syria though. God damn those vehicles look good.
>>
>>30926321
I just assume every SOF wants a carbine length rifle, shorter is better unless you know you're designated for something else.

I always wondered why everyone seemed to hate the SA80, thought it was just hating bullpups meme
>>

A1 was utter and complete shit. A2 is very reliable and accurate. Most of the hate for the A2 is down to ergonomics.

>SA80 was given to the pathfinders in Sierra Leone, and during a major contact with enemy, almost every single rifle failed to fire due to the heat, and the platoon in contact had only their L7's and support weapons to fight with, after that it was banned for SF

This is bullshit since SFSG were using L85s and L22s as late as 2008 (they had a RIS for them over a year before the rest of our forces).

PF also had to make do with L85s again in ~2006 as well because there weren't enough L119 and UGLs to go around, and UKSF's needs were greater.
>>
>>30926444
Nah, the A1 was and is fine. It was the initial model that had the problems (no cleaning kit, chintzy ammo, Colt trying to improve action by turning it into a race gun, etc.)

A2 is fine.

But the UKSF had been using AR platforms since long before the L85 ever existed, and when the M16's replacement time came up in the budget for them, only the L85A1 existed, which WAS shite. So they went with the C8.

When the A2 came about, they already had their new rifle, and while the A2 was good and would eventually gain rails in and around 2008, they'd already had a decade with a weapon that fitted all the gear they needed. They eventually just stuck with it. Also because they work with US and Canadian forces so often anyway that it made sense to use the same platform as them.

Holy shit almost word for word the same story as for a swedish pathfinder unit that was deployed to Sierra Leone. Just replace SA80 with the AK5 and the L7 with the KSP90 and you are golden. After that debaticle the Swedish unit was given G36 until they were folded into the general Swedish SOF force structure.

Britbong here, joining the UKSF is not all its cut out to be. Once you get back in civvy street you will have a hard time getting a decent job. Truth is no one (employment wise) cares if you are capable of military skills. A college degree is more valuable than 20+ years service. I respect everyone in the armed forces but I doubt I would see myself risking my life for the government anytime soon.

SAS were not the first users of AR pattern rifles in the British Army. They were first delivered to patrol companies of the British Infantry regiments doing emergency tours in Borneo. Guards Para were among the first users and put them to good use in their four man bricks, particularly on their long range patrols. Eventually, by about 1963, they were more widely adopted. SAS were somewhat late to the party, issuing the weapons a few months after the Paras got their hands on them.

They came in large cardboard boxes, with fold out instructions, and orange/pink plugs on the end of the muzzle. They had no forward assist and were actually well received by those who used them.

>>30927302
>Truth is no one (employment wise) cares if you are capable of military skills
Depends what you get into, and when. I would agree that the majority of companies prefer civilian experience and qualifications, but again it depends on what you're aiming to get into.

I did very well after I left the Army, after a short rough patch, but that was a different time. That said, these days there are far more opportunities for learning.

It's not a fortune. It's well paid in some areas, but you aren't getting paid a fortune.

Security work, unless you get into consultancy like I did, can be lucrative but it's not steady work and you very quickly find your experience reaching its sell by date. There are exceptions, obviously, but for the most part it's a stop gap not a career.

How long ago did you serve and for how long? I know plenty of ex forces people from 70-80s and 90s+ who struggle to find a stable, high paying job. If I ever would join the forces it would be as a reservist, so I can experience the army as well as keeping a stable job. You are right when saying that it depends on what you want to do, but if you want a high paying white collar job, a college degree + work experience in different companies are more valuable than military service.

Sixties.

>I know plenty of ex forces people from 70-80s and 90s+ who struggle to find a stable, high paying job.
You're right, there are such cases out there. The thing is though, even if you met 200 hundred people that's a minuscule percentage of those who served in HM Armed Forces. It's not indicative of a trend.

>but if you want a high paying white collar job, a college degree + work experience in different companies are more valuable than military service.
Of course it is. But, and it's a big but, the Army takes a massive cross section of society. It's probably the only large employer left that is truly representative of everyone in the country. With that, you get all sorts.

There are many people that struggle to find a stable, high paying job who never went near HM Forces.

>your consultancy role? I am interested to know more about it.
Most of the time it was for foreign or emerging governments (Oman, former Soviet states, Croatia through late 1991 and into 1992) and then on a smaller scale for private industry, particularly in Africa.

I'll stress that I fell very lucky and was fortunate to know some excellent people who were able to employ me, and this was a time when this sort of thing was a lot less regulated than it is today. Small startups were comparatively easy.

Im not saying that the way that companies employ and filter through applicants is correct, as they tend to miss out on very hardworking and intelligent men who do not have a degree to show for it, but unfortunately thats the way the world works now. You are right that the army is willing to accept a large and diverse amount of people, but the problem is that after they finish their service they are dumped and left to fend for themselves with a shitty btec qualification. There isn't much that can be done I guess, but I wish you and anyone else reading that is either serving or has served the best in your endeavours.

Don't even need to do that, civilians pay a fortune for SF training from the real deal. I know a guy that trains airsofters and makes a mint, charges hundreds per head for 3 days training and makes much much than he got while serving for a fraction of the effort.

they do all their training without them.
the final phase of selection involves a couple of weeks of back to back tabs (long distance marches) over a mountain range in wales called the brecon beacons, these vary from 15-50km, carrying a 55lb bergen, plus a full belt of gear and your rifle, without a sling. It's finished with an insane 40 mile tab, with only 20hours to do it. They are intentionally deprived of food throughout all of this.
I guess once you've done this. You no longer need a sling.
It got a lot of media attention in the UK recently because 3 soldiers died doing it a couple of years ago, and the MoD failed to prevent it going public. Now the health and safety PC brigade want to make it 'safer'.

maybe they are happy when they are out on their own, but a few people I know who worked with them said they were just downright unpleasant people. Rude and usually scowling at you. During conversations they would just spit right in front of him was one example he gave. Just a complete lack of normal manners/attempts to be sociable.

I see no real reason to not believe this, to be honest.

I'm just kidding, but it wouldn't surprise me if we find out in 50 years that he was transported to some prison we don't know exists and had his brain picked.

Just to chime in on what that guy said earlier about joining UKSF not being all its cracked up to be - I'd probably agree. My uncle was RSM in the Paras, for a time, and my mate's father was a very, very high ranking officer who did the usual stint in UKSF, so throughout my life I've come into contact with a fair few ex-regiment blokes. Their prospects upon leaving the Army are basically the same as any infantry/non-trade bloke who leaves. Many of them wind up as a mechanic, laborer, doorman. A lot of them live in pretty shitty areas. Those who are quite savvy and entrepreneurial in spirit can make a good go of it (some set up their own security companies, some wrangle their way into very private but very lucrative gigs as a businessman's sole bodyguard/driver/security adviser, some become politicians, some become mountain guides or survivalist consultants), but that's definitely the minority. As someone else said, PMC work is essentially a stop gap.

So, based on that, it'd be fair to say that the best reason to join UKSF isn't the future prospects, but rather a desire to actually do the job while still in the Army. And obviously there's a huge draw there. But like anything else - those of us not in the loop see the glorified version and don't necessarily appreciate the reality. Lying in a piss soaked trench for three weeks is one reality most people don't anticipate. And when you hear stories about how, one moment, a guy's best oppo is sat next to him, and the next moment he's a red mist on the wall behind because a stray mortar happened to land on his head, it kind of makes you question whether driving around the desert in a gucci land rover is necessarily worth it. Especially when you can get a decent operator fill AND a trade by doing something like EOD or flying, where you're gold dust in the civilian market.

Me personally, I'd give it a miss. But then plenty of blokes loved it (and can't accept it's over once they hit civvy street, such was the appeal).

With the GWOT I'd assume they work more closely then ever, especially the top level SF units.

I wouldn't mind some anecdotes as well. Speaking of EO and a career after the army.

>Combatants, some are said to have come from the former Soviet Union but about 300 are reportedly from South Africa and nearing retirement age. Who are the members of this dad’s army, willing to risk death abroad and prosecution at home to fight someone else’s war? What is their motivation? And are they welcomed by those they are ostensibly helping?

>South Africa has a chequered history of exporting soldiers of fortune. Most belong to a generation of soldiers who felt cast aside when the Berlin Wall fell, Nelson Mandela was released and South Africa’s military needs were drastically reduced. Robbed of the only role they were trained for and unable to find alternative work, they felt alienated under a black government and pursued private wars to put bread on the table.

>“Very often it’s a money issue – they haven’t done well and they need to make some,” said Jakkie Cilliers, executive director of the Institute for Security Studies in the capital, Pretoria. “It’s not ideological and it’s not the gung-ho image one has from the film Blood Diamond. This is the only skill these guys have. Most of them are in their late 50s or early 60s and trying to make a late bit of income before they’re past it. In five years’ time it won’t be an issue.”

Guys in units like SAS/SBS/Delta/DEVGRU tend to be in those units because to them the operator lifestyle is the only way to live for them. They didn't choose the operator life, the operator life chose them. And they love it.

the SAS gets special rights to order whatever guns they want on an individual basis rather than using standardised kit.

>>30926326
SRR is basically a sub-division of SAS anyway - you have to cycle through SRR while in SAS, so SRR probably went in ahead of any SAS operation (knowing SRR, probably around the major towns along the euphrates)
>>
>>30927302
duh, you're supposed to go find work with some third world despot after doing SF work.

>>30934304

Basically you need telephone operators for operating operators to call up and patch them through to other people.

Not SF, but this is the only Brit thread up right now;
I've been getting fit in order to join the army and I want to be a Tank Crewman. Has anyone here had this role that can give me an idea of the experience?
I also have a minor case of astigmatism in my right eye, would my roles be limited because of this?
