Final tip, and very useful:
Don't jerk back on the trigger when aiming. Pull gently, until you feel the resistance where if you pull further, the gun will fire, take further aim, and fire. This will make you more accurate.
Of course, in a self defense situation, you'll probably magdump like anyone else, but it's still good to know you CAN shoot with reasonable accuracy.

I know I am joining this party a little late but since I also purchased a TTC as my first handgun I figure I will add my 2¢

The gun itself is reliable. Ammo can be difficult to get and does cost more than your average round.

Recoil is not horrific. A little heavier than 9mm. They are louder than a lot of other handguns (not the loudest but expect to get some attention).

As for taking it to a range and shooting for the first time; make sure you have decent hearing protection (see loud) and follow the four basic rules of firearm safety plus any additional rules the range hits you with. If you have any questions, put the gun down (pointed in a safe direction and unloaded of course) and as a range officer. They will most likely help you.

As a side note. The tokarev grip angle is very square compared to other handguns and will screw with you if/when you decide to buy/shoot another gun.
