what was the purpose of those buildings ? (i think something anti submarine related) and how effective were they?
>>30919052
bump for interest. I have not seen this before
>>30919052
AA platforms in the middle of the Channel to help ward off enemy attackers on merchant vessels and coastal areas.
/thread
God damn could you imagine how much it would cost to put those up?
I wonder if it was worth it..
>>30919102
You can't /thread your own post
It's not polite
>>30919102
This guy got it right.
Didn't we also have some in the pacific, or am I retarded?
>>30919209
Probably fucking nothing in the grand scheme of things. There's what, 700-800 abandoned oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico alone?
>>30919102
>>30919238
They're not in the channel, they're in the Thames estuary to close the gap in London's AA defenses.
Having platforms like this randomly in the Pacific would be absolutely pointless.
I'd bet this is where the inspiration for Mother Base came from
ok AA makes sense. for the longest time i thought were built to destroy submarines or at least search for submarines.
>>30919377
how the fuck do you build something like this in the ocean?
>>30919526
How the fuck do you build an oil rig in the ocean?
>>30919526
Same way you build any platform.
1) Build it
2) Tow it
3) Sink it
>>30919526
They were built very close to the mainland, where the sea floor is relatively shallow.
>>30919562
After seeing this image all I can picture is an oil platform tipping over. I'm sure it isn't, but that looks sketch as all get out.
>>30919248
Abandoned you say?
>>30919590
There's even a helicopter on the pad so there are people on the platform as it's being moved
Fuuuuuuck that
>>30919377
You feel it to don't you
>>30919052
Breeding clones?
>>30919052
Wasn't there an English game show hosted in one of those things? iirc it was kinda like Gladiator
>>30919230
suck a dick
/thread
some pirate radio stations set up on a couple of these things in the 60s and 70s
Sealand was operated from a platform similar to these
>>30919591
Why dont we start taking them as ours and become a successful sea faring society that lives on old oil rigs?
>>30921099
Most of our troops are from combat zones extracted with a Fulton device
>>30919591
Looks like a good place to set up as a naval /k/ompound
>>30919526
Its like putting a stool in a bathtub filled with water.
>>30919621
>>30919590
think of it like one of those weeble wobble things.
>>30919052
can one boat up to these and get in them? seems like a cool as hell place to explore
>>30919502
nigga how that make sense, a submarine could easily just sail around it whilst that fucking thang couldn't do shit except sit there
>>30920145
Real mature, Bradley.
>>30919052
I can picture it now
>Hans, the enemy has built shit in our path. What do we do?
*sails around*
>Hans, you fucking genius! Here, have another Iron Cross
>>30922076
>Hans, you fucking genius! Here, have another Iron Cross
Basically sums up the Third Reich.
>>30919989
Fort Boyard!
Same idea but not WW2, i think it was 18th century to keep the french away.
Seafort thread?
>>30922534
I dun goofed, its actually in france kek.
I was getting it mixed up with this one.
>>30919526
You reject those answers, and instead, you choose the impossible.
>>30919526
Its a matter of towing and sinking with bith sea forts and rigs anon.
How do they ensure it is level?
>>30921165
>get to abandoned AA posts
>nobody has taken care of them
>interiors are corroded and rusty
>half of floor falling out
>none of them are connected
>have to work together rope system to go between them
>in first week, 3 people die from pieces of the bunkers falling off while theyre on the ropes
>still scraping nasty unknown shit off the walls and ceiling
>half of possessions now coated in mold
>no toilet other than a hole in the floor, which was thankfully already there
>week 2
>run out of MREs
>supply boats drop off food
>realize i dont have an oven
>no wood for a fire
>fugg
>>30923051
Not really an issue where they sinked those my guess is, they're all in the Thames estuary, where you can expect that the constant come and go of the tides levelled it for you, so does the river flow.
They're not in high sea, save sealand, and even then it must have been thanks to the particularly good conditions, and the fact that it is "only" 30NM from the shore
>>30921143
I can already only see from my left eye. If someone would jam a chunk of metal in my head, this just might work.
>>30923082
>being so retarded as to not think about these problems beforehand
ITT Anons have no idea how offshore oil rigs are made. Holy shit just google or look up youtube vids.
