Why?
They're already rotting and weakened.
And all you have to do is damage the brain.
Temporary cavities are a lot more effective on the brain than just random tissue elsewhere in the body.
5.55 is the perfect round and balanced to kill people as well as zombies.
It's light enough to carry more of than your "bigger bullets" as well.

.223 is also older than 5.56 so hunting rounds have been being developed far longer.
5.56 was made for warfare, killing humans by fragmenting.
.223 was a hunting round, and still is to this day.
And if we're talking expanding hunting rounds, with lower pressure, wouldn't .223 have more time to fully expand in the target than 5.56?
