Im considering a career as an LEO, and im really interested in becoming a state trooper
>better pay (depending)
>much cooler uniforms
>out in the country/woods not so much in the city
>which means I wont have to deal with city youths as often (among other things)
>better training
>better pay
>better opurtunies for advancement and transfering around my state
but
>much harder to get accepted
>training takes a lot longer and is more of a boot camp Id have to pay for
>backup could be 20 minutes away while I get into deep shit on the highway

what do you guys think about state troopers? LEO input obviously welcome
>>

If cooler uniforms is a pro you need to look for another job, and if you have to pay to put yourself through academy your SP is lacking.

not so much "put myself through" but the academy is more of a boot camp and I have to live at the barracks 5 days a week so id have to budget mysef. Something about weeding out the family men who cant afford it

If you really want to be out in the country join the sheriff's office. They patrol unincorporated areas. And if you want to be in the woods join the conservation police (US Forestry Service, DNR, Park Police, game warden, etc.) Don't worry about the pay as much as the benefits, you'll make your money on overtime and side jobs if you need it but good insurance and retirement are golden.

Other than being a fed, it's the best work you can get as a cop. Be prepared for a tough academy though, most states have 4-6 month programs that are basically bootcamp with weekends.

Current state trooper, former city cop. Its more or less what youd expect. I do prefer it much more then being in the city, getting to drive the highways all day is pretty comfy. If youre worried about being in danger then dont be a cop. the jpb is dangeorus no matter what and just becuase youre in a town or city doesnt mean back up is right around the corner. Aside from that
>no your motor vehicle laws, the carol doctrine and all that. You deal with traffic stops more then anything else
>you'll also see more car accidents the any other "crime scene", get a strong stomach and be ready to tell a lot of parents their kid just got scarped off the asphalt
>get comfortable cushions for your cruiser, you'll be in it a lot
>bring toilet paper with you, I am not more comfortable shitting in the woods then anywhere else
If I could do it again id be a trooper first rather then a city cop, but im glad I did the city part at the same time. It just sucks having to go back to an academy and start over

Il probably end up taking it, but so help me if I wake up one day and suddenly be 50 and never did leave im jumping in front of a truck

is it easy to be a cop coming out of HS in ontario? Should I go to those police college programs or just wait a few years with job experience and go for the academy
>>
>>30779470

Where are you trying to be a state trooper? On the west coast from California to Washington, (can't speak for alaska) the state law enforcement agencies pay shit. Staters make $50-80,000, city and county cops make $75-200,000 as their career progresses and with OT if they want it.

Same goes for the fire service which I know more about being a firefighter (except its even worse) Calfire was paying their guys minimum wage on a fire where I was making $60 an hour to do the same job.

Also what backwater state do you live in where academy is on your dime?

I went to a state fire academy at the same time a few buddies of mine went to regional and local police academies. None of us had to pay. Infact we were paid our salary and given free food/lodging and an allowance for incidentals at all of our academies.

Best 3 months of my life... After tax I had $5500 in my bank account every month and didn't spend a cent with exception of $1000 for mortgage and insurance.

NY Cop here. Troopers here get the same training to start out as we do, DCJS Standards (except NYC, they have standards which are Much lower). Then Troopers never get much training afer that. My Agency has sent me to 60 or so schools over the years. NYS Troopers (New) have this weird Unjustified Attitude that they are somehow better than local Police. That may be true somewhere, but not around here... It is so weird to get attitude from a Trooper with his serving since Yesterday pin, who doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.
They make Stupid money though. Almost $100,000 with overtime. WTF. Don't answer the 911 pulls, drive 30 mph to back us up and make that much $....

OP you have to ask yourself the following questions.
1) do I want to do actual police work
2) do I want to hand out tickets and work wrecks.

If you answered yes to number 1. Make sure you find a state which isn't primarily highway patrol.
If you answered yes to 2. Doesn't really matter.

I'm a city cop and sometimes envy the troopers because they get the gnarly wrecks and I enjoy accident reconstruction. But at the same time, I do real police work. Troopers *in my state* would be lost on domestics and other none traffic related crimes. We had a trooper call us to come deal with a shoplifter once.

Also, they're all uptight cunts because their Academy is so strict. The state Academy for regular police and Rangers is 12 weeks. For Troopers it's 6 months. I have no idea what the hell they teach them. I'm sure the last 3 are focused solely on making sure they never smile again.

My advice is get in anywhere you can, even if it's city. Get a couple years of experience and move on to what you know you want to do.

I don't know where in NY you are, but around here the Troopers go in for about as many 911 calls as the Deputies. Sometimes more.

Not going to ID my state but I am a state level LEO in an investigative agency in the south. I work with HP often.

It is not very hard to get hired, easier than many PDs and SOs.

The training is very rigorous and has a much larger physical training and firearms component. Washout rate is very high in my state. There are continuing fitness requirements- no fat troopers here unless they are bearmode.

It is probably one of the best ways to get in "off the street" and stepped raises are better than most other agencies and local departments.

It is very easy to lateral elsewhere if need be.

You will however sometimes be a ticket machine, which is why I never went that route. I actually started with my state's probation agency to get in and applied to where I am now. I don't mind a good old cuff and stuff for a drunk or belligerent dude, but I have never had to write a ticket for some piddly ass shit and never wanted to.

Also, state troopers pull mad tail.

Be in good shape, dress and present sharply, answer the poly honestly. I you don't get it your first time, and many don't, try again. Try other states. Make sure your state is a good one. I hear Florida sucks to be a trooper in. Some states exclusively deal with roads and traffic stuff outside of the occasional joint action (NC comes to mind) and some are full service (VA). Pick one with a good pension.
>>
>>30783920
It's possible they've seen so many traffic related deaths they take their job too seriously, as such they lose their sense of humor and feel like they're the last line of defense against traffic related infractions.
>>
>>30782146
... You mean a town cop?

Always wanted to be an NYS trooper, but

1. Didn't want to move across the state to Albany for academy.
2. I'm way too out of shape to meet the reqs.
3. Met a trooper and realized it's not all that great.

>academy
The purpose of the Academy is to wipe away your way of doing things and then retrain you to the legal requirements/processes of the state so as to maintain the BOOK. There is a reason there is so much stigma regarding "by the book" in most department. Normally Police don't like to have there busts ruled over because they didn't do things right. It makes you look like a schmuck to your partners. This is one of the reasons that police work is simple yet Dangerous. 75% of the Job is paperwork for the legal system. You will not be living a life like SVU or Bosch. The streets willl force you to think about things that you didn't think about before but you can't just go off and beat someone because they pissed you off.

The scene in end of watch where the Hispanic officer takes off his belt and gets down and dirty with the street crew for creds would be grounds for immediate termination if it got back to command and was confirmed. IA would have a field day with it. plus you then have all you other officers being retrained over a stupid mistake.

There is alot of mental judo in the job when it comes to diffusion of situations. Hope you can Learn to remove emotion from your reactions.

>>30788565
Maybe because the rest of those people do. You know who i'm talking about, anon.
>>
>>30788565
Go ahead and hop the turnstile you little bitch and see what happens. If the cop is feeling frisky he can arrest your bitch ass for Theft of Service instead of a TAB summons.

It's shit work with shit pay. There's a reason 50% of hires quit LE within the first 5 years.

You're not getting hired on at state level without experience, and a lot of it. I know a guy who's trying to do that, he's 38 now.
