Why did it took 50 years to figure out right geometry of feed lips? Are you dumb? Americans explain yourself.

Why are you even responding to bait when you know it's bait? However, he does have a point. Why did it take so long to figure out the damn feed lips?

Since when was it a problem?

There is literally nothing wrong with AK until you start using optical sights, laser pointers and other stuff soviet grunts did not have (well safety clicks and this is it).

Since most of the failures in the AR-15 platform can be traced to the magazines?
>>
>>30763345
1970-~now
Most M16 and M4 failures are magazine caused.
>>
>>30763375

Because it was less about the feed lips, and more about the overall geometry of the mag.
>>
>>30763345
>Since when was it a problem?
>boasts a 300% increase in the mean number of rounds between stoppages when used in the M4 Carbine
>300% increase
For something like 600 to 1800 MRBS. Don't you think this is serous improvement for such minuscule change that can be done 50 years ago?

Beat up mags though.

Or those without antitilt followers (which the civilian market figured out 30 years ago and the military got around to fixing 15 years go).

All the ideal geometry in the world isn't gonna mean shit if you put a big dent in it.
>>

Another example of American dumbness.
>>
>>30763183
The change was needed to keep M855A1 from destroying the feed ramps. If you wanted to call Americans stupid you should have focused on the fact that they field an overpressure round that will destroy their rifle chambers unless snowflake mags are used. Not to mention doubling down on stupid and modifying aluminum mags instead of just adopting the proven polymer mags that were M855A1 compatible.
>>
>>30763438
it isn't
I am just a neutral observer wondering why someone who doesn't really understand english is posting on an english board.
it seems counter productive to me, you could get a better echo chamber on any number of other fourms in your own language.
>>
>>30763449
If you can get an alium mag to do what a poly mag does, why not?

They are as cheap as water to the US DOD, why spend more?

It does both. Increases MRBS and saves feed ramps.
>>
>>30763380
Not really a big deal anymore.
Original issue mags were intended to be used like stripper clips, made cheap and flimsy to facilitate this, it'd handle about one load at the factory (20rds), when empty, you'd throw it away.

Except economy and logistics didn't allow this, people ended up collecting them and reloading them out of necessity, and this was one of the big problems with the early iterations of the M16.
Once it had fed 20rds, the spring started to give, to get it to keep working, you had to download the capacity with each load cycle, 20 from factory, then 18 for the first refill, then 16, until it wouldn't work anymore or capacity became too low.

With the A1 model, new 20rd magazines were devised, of stronger aluminum and sturdier springs, so they could be reused. The later 30rd mags also had better feed geometry.

The A1 also featured a cleaning kit in the stock and came with instructions on how to use it (before this, GIs were told the gun "cleaned itself"), and the bore & chamber was chromed, to increase reliability and help with cleaning.

The biggest problem faced by the M16 was that the hot ammo ran the gun too fast (and too dirty), this lead to many instances of the action outrunning itself, like the firing pin or extractor acting out if time, so you'd get a click instead of a bang.
The A1 model solved this by making the buffer heavier, to bring the action down to normal speed.

All in all, the AR-15 was pretty good from the ground up, a lot of the later good features (like the chrome bore) were original features that werd initially cut to save money, and the Army Irdnance board made some other retarded changes.
The A1 brought back a number of original deleted features, and added some others.

Basically Army Ordnance were a bunch of fucks who did things they shouldn't, and McNammarra was an autist who wanted to save money.

So the M16 was kind of held back by a bunch of dumb shit it had to go through before blooming into the M16A1
>>
>>30763183
They changed the geometry of the feed lips because M855A1's exposed penetrator was damaging feed ramps with the old ones.

There's literally nothing wrong with the old feed lips if you're shooting anything other than M855A1.
>>
>>30763320
I've never had problem with the feed lips on any of my AR mags.

no
>>
>>30763277
Actually, I find the ergonomics of an AK better than an AR's. The buttstock is a tad too short, but it doesn't really affect anything. Rather short than too long.
>>
>>30763756
Everything I have on my computer does work though.
>>
>>30763320

looks like the increased reliability is a side effect of the main purpose, which is to not have the steel penetrators on green tip m855A1 wearing out the enhanced feed ramps on the M4. So the reason this took a while is because the problem they meant to solve is relatively recent.
>>
scrub a dub dub
>>
>>30763826
>looks like the increased reliability is a side effect of the main purpose
Pmag had similar feed geometry before M855A1.
>>
>>30763532
Kek
>>
>>30763880

Then that's probably where they got the idea from. I mean, it's not like the US government wouldn't spend years and millions of tax dollars replicating research that's already been done at a fraction of the time and cost by independent companies.
>>
>>30763880
Apparently everybody forgets how many tons of paper have to be generated for changes to occur in US Mil procurement
>>
>>30763880
>Pmag has the same geometry
Aren't US troops allowed to buy their own mags? If so, the thiught process probably went something like this:
>Pmags run better than USGI but they're expensive
>GI is good enough
>Get M855a1
>steel tip is wearing feed ramps
>Notice the problem doesn't happen to guys who use Pmags
>Lightbulb.exe
>New GI has Pmag geometry.
>>
>>30763375
>28 countries using the same mags
>US is the only one to invest in improving mags

The US has been upgrading mags ever few years since the early 2000s
>>
Where can I get these mags?
>>
So what happens to all the old mags since m855a1 won't work in them?
>>
>>30764230
Surplus probably
>>

Hopefully they surplus the shit out of them.

But I fear instead they will be put into storage, destroyed or given to some """"moderate"""" rebels.

No, we're the best. Explain why you don't have a different platform rifle that can rival ours.
>>
>>30764042
They are already lost case and pay patent fee for M855A1 time to pay for mags that can feed it.
>>
>>30764556
That's what people said when they made the tan anti-tilt follower, which looks like it was ripped straight from the Magpul PMAG only mirrored.

The point of my "story" was an idea of how they got the idea of copying Magpul's feed angle.
Also, checked for 556.

Well that depends on what the objective is, doesn't it? If your learning a foreign language, makes a lot of sense to practice it by visiting forums dedicated to something your interested in.

Speaking of mags, I just got some green follower mags from my friend in Okinawa, are they any good?

M855 is green tip.
M855A1 has an exposed inner core.

Just take some lessons, you might actually learn what words mean and when to use them.
>>
>>30763183
OP, why not show us the gun you designed.
>>
>>30765635
They're pretty sucky, they were replaced with tan followers with anti-tilt. Just beat these mags up, they're pretty worthless. In most cases your weapon will malfunction because of the magazine, and I've dealt with the green followers enough to fucking hate them.

Nonetheless, they're mags and you can use them as such.
>>
>>30763387
>an improvement from .3% to .1% failure rate.

It's very incremental, and the problem they address is M855A1 specific.

So they've only had a few years to discover and fix it.
>>
>>30765635
Buy Magpul or Brownells enhanced follower rebuild kits.

Print out a feed lip gauge, check your feed lips and replace your followers and springs.
