It was 100,000 strong. Even NZ has come up with twice as many soldiers at times. Being a soldier is literally a profession if you are not a conscript. The enemy is the enemy. Who he is does not affect your drills so much, and they were a very well prepared military force

An interesting fact is the French Foreign Legion at this time was full of German soldiers. Many veterans, and many men with ideological concerns

Well what else was there to do? Most of germany was demilitarized or turned into a puppet state. The legion gave new names and identities, meaning clean slate of history. No stain on your name from ww2 and no cadre trying to round you up for gulag.

Germans rightfully had no faith in Nazism. It reduced their country to rubble and had it carved up by foreign powers.

East German conscripts were just trying to get by in life mostly, daddy being butthurt that the Soviets beat him wouldn't change that. They would have made for poor soldiers tho.

Israeli's fought east germans in the sinai during the war of attrition.

They were not very good soldiers supposedly, but they at least were able to stand and fight unlike the Egyptians.

I consider myself a NatSoc, but let's be real. The German people were lucky to survive the war at all, let alone set up a State and Government that eventually became the most autonomous and successful of the Warsaw pact countries. The German people were literally starved, bombed, burned, and beaten to death, while under the rule of the National Socialists fighting the Soviets. War gets very tiring, and leaves a bad taste in your heart if you lose. Losing a war isn't proof of an ideology being wrong, but it can certainly put you in your place. The means for Nationalist resistance were non-existent for the East German people. The Stasi was one of the most, if not the most successful secret police in history. Something like 1 in 8 people were either an agent, regular informant, or irregular informant.
I think a lot of East Germans genuinely wanted to give Socialism a shot after the hell they had been through during the war. It ended up being a massive failure (as Socialism always is), but at the time, many still wanted to give it a try (even though the signs were still there that it was failing).
Maybe they had a few miserable years, maybe even a few good early years of Germany under National Socialism, but the war, then "reeducation" changed things. From the '65 on, most the men serving in the NVA weren't even born during the war, and this era is what most people think of when they think of the NVA.

Honestly, it's like most soldiers in any Army, it's just a career choice. Politics doesn't have a lot to do with it.

I doubt that they would mount any kind of significant resistance if the NATO forces attacked. We would have probably seen massive surrenders. I wouldn't be suprised if some of them even started shooting at the Soviet troops.
