It's probably coated either in some sort of insect repellant like how US uniforms are soaked in it, maybe some pretty gnarly stuff because it doesn't actually rest on your skin.

Or it's some sort of anti-mold or mothball type chemical to keep critters out of stockpiles.

I would just wash it a few times and see if that helps.

I'm going to be using it for ar mags for the time being. Open top, straps off to the side and secured to squeeze the mags a little tighter.

Not that front heavy since it's single stacked, and very tight fit to the torso. I'm going to get some buckles so I don't need to tie the back, but I just got this thing and haven't used it yet, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
