If you're spending anything more than the cost of a 10/22 you are basically buying a 10/22 clone, or a replica of a higher caliber rifle.

what about the 15-22 ? any good?

Good choice and well under a $500 budget, depending on the seller. Picked my 15-22 sport up for $350 at my lgs. Threw a $150 red dot on it and bam you got yourself a nice plinker for $500. other accessories are optional if your budget allows it.

Still an overpriced 10/22, just shaped like something else.

Magpul accessories works just fine, just make sure you get a mil spec stock, it will be really loose with a commercial stock. Everything else should be good to go, even a ar drop-in trigger group will work fine.

PPS-50/22's are around that price if you're really against 10/22's.
Any recommended stocks to throw a 10/22 on? What about buying the cheapest 10/22 then dropping it into a aftermarket stock

hogue and magpul are both good
