If you want something you can cutomise to your hearts content without sacrificing its ability to work hard and take some hits, get a Toyota Tacoma. There's a reason the recalled '04s are still pulling $6500. Plus if you're a SHTF type, they're easy on the gas, theres a huge surplus of parts and theyre very easy to work on, especially a 90's one.

My current Box O' Fun is a 1993 Chevy Suburban K2500HD, one of the goofy government models with a 3500 chassis and skid plates everywhere but the base engine and pretty much no interior. Picked it up for a song and needs some minor TLC and replacing the A/C condensor because it got shot a few times in the past. Not fun on gas though.

Subarus are a bit of a compromise. Good enough for modest trails. If it's just dirt roads you're worried about almost any normal car can do that. With just the standard city package and wheels it would still plow through 5dm snow walls and 3dm of snow long enough to get it parked at our country cottage. You always felt stable in those when the 4-wheel drive is on.

Due to a deteriorating financial situation, I recently picked up a Mercury Sable.

Seats six, trunk is pretty big, surprisingly quick, and you can transition fairly easily out of the seats.

Definitely a sleeper operating vehicle.

Only problem is keeping the leather clean, oh yeah, and no CD player.

I'm 6'2 at 200 lbs, and could fit 3 other friends (all between 5'9"-6'4") and our gear for a week long camping trip without any issues. As a matter of fact I stand by my statement.
