If you want something you can cutomise to your hearts content without sacrificing its ability to work hard and take some hits, get a Toyota Tacoma. There's a reason the recalled '04s are still pulling $6500. Plus if you're a SHTF type, they're easy on the gas, theres a huge surplus of parts and theyre very easy to work on, especially a 90's one.
Pic related is pretty much the most rock solid option for you ('99)
My current Box O' Fun is a 1993 Chevy Suburban K2500HD, one of the goofy government models with a 3500 chassis and skid plates everywhere but the base engine and pretty much no interior. Lift, wheels, tires, bumpers, lights, half-top, etc., etc. If you call and talk to them in person to place your orders you can usually get better deals than what's on the site. When I ordered my lift, wheels and tires I called and talked to a sales rep. I wanted to order their house brand 3" lift for $600, but it was out of stock, so he sold me a $900 4" Pro Comp lift for the same price.

Any true offroad car has mileage that varies from horrendous to even worse. Big wheels and poor aerodynamics do that.
Subarus are a bit of a compromise. Good enough for modest trails. If it's just dirt roads you're worried about almost any normal car can do that. We had a /k/ meet up 11 miles of dirt road, steep grades, rocks, fallen trees, washboard, etc. and plenty of 2wd cars made it, including a Subaru BRZ and a Saturn Ion.

is it because you realize that at any time you could direct your 1 ton hunk of metal traveling at 70 miles per hour into any one of the surrounding cars or the concrete dividers, killing you and possibly others instantly? or is it the realization that any other driver on the road could have this realization and kill you?

Well, statistically speaking, fearing cars/driving is a legitimately sensible fear; your odds of dying because of car-related shit are relatively high. Fearing guns doesn't make as much sense in comparison, for example.
Fearing heart disease and cancer should probably be the thing people actively fear most, but instead they're afraid of shit like mass-shooters even if they should fear death by madman less than death by lightning strike.
>>30646353
My mom had some late 90's jeep cherokee, same hull design as yours but lower height.
With just the standard city package and wheels it would still plow through 5dm snow walls and 3dm of snow long enough to get it parked at our country cottage. You always felt stable in those when the 4-wheel drive is on.
Best part was when this one girl drove right in to the rear and had her front completely smashed while the jeep got off with just some paint scratches.
They told me I shouldn't.
They told me there was no use for it.
They told me I couldn't park it anywhere.
But I did anyway, and it has been sweet.
>>30648962
I made that response because I had a similar fear for a short while when I was still learning, and was afraid that I'd fuck up while driving somehow and end up killing someone. Then I figured out that everyone wants to avoid being hit, so as long as you don't drive like a fucking psycho you've got a reasonably wide margin for making errors.
>>30649001
how many times have you gotten your fuel stolen so far?
>>30649064
Zero. You can't steal fuel from it because there is a metal mesh/grate just inside tank. You can fill it up, but you can't siphon it out.
>>30649038
Agreed, of course. Thankfully, my commute has very little other drivers and no real "dangerous spots" aside from maybe the occasional deer crossing. No accidents so far, knock on wood. However the illusion of control is still a factor with driving a car. Shit can just go wrong, you know?

Get an outback. New, old whatever. They are all fucking reliable as hell, can take you almost anywhere (minus insane fucking rockcrawling n shit) and for the other part of your life where you live in normal society you get good gas mileage and plenty of fucking room. Also it doesn't have the aerodynamics of a fridge (ie jeep)

Salty hippy confirmed. Just because you don't have a use for larger vehicles doesn't mean the rest of us don't. If all you're using your Saturn for is grocery getting then good on you. Don't think the rest of us limit ourselves that way though.

Camel Trophy spec Defender 110.
Pros:
>It cost me nothing
>Mechanically it's sound
>It came with a load of Camel branded gear that I sold on eBay for a lot of money
>It went across Africa carrying five men and their gear, so it probably suits me for carrying logs, the dog and some of my equipment
>Actually well mannered at low speeds
>More than enough for anything within a thousand miles
Cons:
>It smells like piss
>I don't live in Central Africa
>It's quite loud
>"Spotters" keep telling me what is original/what isn't original and why, as if I care in the slightest
>I keep hoping we get flooding so I can use the snorkel

I want something that is good for 5 people going backpacking that I can also drive over unpaved roads filled with huge potholes to go to a buddy's property in eastern Washington.
I want to pick up something used for under 8K and probably paint it matte sage green or something.
Should I go with a four door huge rear SUV like a Suburban, or a 4 door truck?

Older (read: 90s) Jeep Cherokee tends to be the go-to low budget trail rider. You can get one in excellent shape for 3k and kit it out like you wouldn't believe if you *had* to blow the rest of that 5k.

Then you get a more comfortable ride, and you can actually carry shit without losing anything.

Wish I still had my blazer.
Note: 2003 Mitsubishi Mirage cannot innawoods.
Due to a deteriorating financial situation, I recently picked up a Mercury Sable.
Seats six, trunk is pretty big, surprisingly quick, and you can transition fairly easily out of the seats.
Definitely a sleeper operating vehicle.
Only problem is keeping the leather clean, oh yeah, and no CD player.

I really don't want a grocery trip to be 9 hours long and limited to dry goods, so my bike only gets used on trails around the farm.
>>30645263
Depending on what I, my wife, or my one >15yo kid have to do that day either a 2006 300C AWD, a Tacoma TRD, or a GMC 3500 quad cab diesel duallie (the farm truck).
>tfw 800 miles between fill-ups with the 3500 due to secondary tank and a cavernous main tank
>tfw even using the dyed farm diesel at $1.55/gal it's a hunnerd bux to fill up
>>30677756
Other than sperging the first sentence he's not wrong. The biggest jeep has dick-all for cargo capacity, especially if you need people in the second row of seats. Seriously, the fucking Honda minivan has a bigger cargo area.
>>30676994
>less cargo capacity than a Mini Cooper
>on-road comfort akin to having a pro soccer star repeatedly kicking you in the ass
>seats are not in the slightest adjustable
>road noise worse than front-row at an airshow
>Chrysler reliability, Mercedes price tag
>underpowered, can't pull a jet ski at highway speeds without downshifting to third gear
>rolls super fucking easily
yeah no
>>30673413

>5 people and 5 backpacks
Not unless you're throwing 1 person and all 5 backpacks on a roof rack, or you're all under 140lbs and have $10k in ultralight backpacking shit (then you only need to throw 3 backpacks on a roof rack).
I made that mistake once. Bought a '96. Even with the rear seats folded I had enough room for the cheapo Coleman cooler, my 45L backpack, and a buddy and his 55L backpack. That was it and shit was stacked so high I couldn't use the rearview mirror.
>>30668350
If only maintenance wasn't so expensive.
I also wish it had a bit more ground clearance, and the ads of "it's totally an offroad car guise, watch it drive over this hard-packed and well groomed dirt/gravel *road* somewhere in the PNW at 20mph!" piss me off but that's not the car's fault.

Yes, it is completely road legal. The only thing to watch out for is sharp turns, low bridges, and bridges with a weight limit less than 10.5 tons.
>>30668211
It is a 1991 M923A2, which has an 8.3L Cummins diesel.
>>30679939
Whoops, missed the 5 people part. That being said, you can easily fit 5 with plenty of cargo space, as long as they're not all morbidly obese. I'm 6'2 at 200 lbs, and could fit 3 other friends (all between 5'9"-6'4") and our gear for a week long camping trip without any issues. As a matter of fact I stand by my statement. Plus, a roof rack was would just make everything 5 times more comfy.
You guys must have some serious space concerns if you can't trek out of a Cherokee.
