It's good, accurate, reliable, easy to operate and maintain but heavy as fuck
Have one since I'm in the Swiss Army, but I'll take a 553 or even an AR15 any day for actual combat
>>
>Viable
For what? Not every army has the same criteria.
>>
>>30593694
Those are not rumors. The Stgw 90 with an optic IS switzerlands DMR
>>
Its a blessing for us /k/anucks since its NR.
But expensive as fuck.
Saving up for one atm
>>
>>30593694
Heavy
The US-made ones have wonky folding stocks, rattley handguard, receiver, they just feel like shit
They're not too accurate either by AR-15 standards, even some AK's outshoot them.

>>30593705
get out

The Stgw 90 is an excellent rifle, but it does have some quirks:

First thing, it's long and heavy.

Them, it's prohibitively expensive, and so are all accessories ($100 30-round mags, $70 20-round mags...).

Laking rails it's not very modulable (you can either buy a $250 Jenny scope-mount, weld a rail section on the upper receiver, screw rail sections through the handguard, or buy one of those $600 railed handguard from B&T).

The Stgw 90 was designed as a gun for infantrymen to lay ambushes with (the 20 round mag is designed to give a lower profile to prone shooters). As this it performs very well, but is, IMO, a little bit too long and cumbersome for CQB.

There are more accurate AR-15's, but they will be civilian expensive (AR expensive, not Stgw 90 expensive) target/competition guns not military models. Also, being piston operated, means the rifle is very reliable, but kicks a tad more than a direct impingement rifle (this is counterbalanced by the front heavy gun).

From the ergonomics, the rifle is a mix between an AR-15 (ambidextrous fire selector, BHO) and an AK (reciprocating bolt on the right side, mag release, rock in mags). The translucent mags are also pretty good as they are light and allow for instantaneous ammo check.

Finally, the rifle itself is extremely robust and durable - AK-lineage. Swiss conscripts often abuse their rifles in all possible ways. The steel receiver and heavy barrels are extremely sturdy (if the rifle is shut frozen, you just bang it against a tree until the ice is broken, turn the gas selector on high, and fire the rifle) and withstand the abuse easily.

That said, if I had the choice, I'd rather go with the more compact and more modular SIG 551 or SIG 553 (provided they have the railed upper receiver).

This
It's absurd to hear and see what some soldiers do to their SIGs, but they keep on working, like it's predecessor the Stgw 57, of which I have heard first hand stories of it being used as tanker bar on an M113

Link to story?

She's the cutest.
>>
It's overrated as fuck.

Basically this hype comes from Swiss people that never used any other 5.56 rifle of the same price point. Any high quality semi auto 5.56 rifle will perform the same or better than the Stgw 90.

I've seen people use Hera Arms ARs outperform 550s at 300m shooting with just stock iron sights. It's basically the hype of people that only have that one rifle and people that cannot own one.

>source I own one for sports shooting.

Opinion discarded.

>Be guy i know, let's call him peter
>peter is an M113 driver
>get's orderd to switch tracks or some shit
>can't find tanker bar
>superiors probably took it
>404 no fucks found
>takes Stgw 57 and uses it as bar
>finishes switching tracks drives off
>slaps a repair label on it and it gets fixed
>the end
>>
>>30596543
But it is.

Here in Switzerland only fudds and people that do not know any other rifle other than the SIG 550 usually hype the fuck out of the rifle.

It's a good rifle, but it's not this fucking holy grail that people on /k/ like to make it. Try buying a high quality 5.56 rifle for 3.5k USD and tell me that it will be worse than the Sig 550...
>>
>>30593735
What's that tape for?
>>
Still would rather have an STGW57 in 7.5 swiss
>>
>>30596974
>Even heavier than the 90
Why ?

>>30596937
To show that the gun is empty and not loaded
>>
Whenever im talking to swissfags about it irl they cant stop raving about it, i definetly want to get to shoot it at some point, unfornatly that wont be anytime soon

I have been many times in "standing position" with my Stgw90 (sig550) for 3-4 minutes without moving (ficki ficki) during my military service. It's a little bit hard at the beginning but then very easy to use.
No, the only critical point that I can tell is the length that may be problematic in very close quarter combat. But it isn't really annoying.
I have had the Sig553 (Stgw07) in my hands. And with all the optics, 30 rds mags and shit it's barely the same weight than the Sig550 without optic.
Once again, the only advantage is the barrel length. And keep in mind that a 553 has less precision due to the shorter barrel. So i'd say that the Sig550 is more polyvalent.

>>30594039
The problems with the sig (sauer) rifles exist only in the US. The original swiss made work very well.

Btw does the Stgw57 destroys your shoulder like the K31?

Nigga, what the fuck kind of glass shoulder do you have? K31's recoil is very manageable.
>>
>>30598445
Well.. It hurts me after only 6 shots :'(

In fact I have only used 5.6 (plus .223), 9mm and .12 with a remington 870. The fucking .12 destroyed me too because I shot once during an entire day like 300 rounds.
I have fired thousands of .223 easily but the 7.5 is brutal m8.
>>
>>30598540
Either get used to the recoil or see a doctor about bad shoulder joint warning signs.

wot

So basically like the US and AR-15s, except without that many fudds shooting it
>>
>>30598625

What are you talking about?
>>
>>30597057
>>30596937
i think its actually to show if the gun is fired after an event, less ambiguity about which soldiers returned fire on assailants

if the gun is fired the op handle with tear through the tape
>>
>>30598625
>>30600096

In fact he's partially right. Since we are talking of the Sig550 (assault rifle) we should compare it to M4/M16 and not AR15.
They semi-auto rifle version of the Sig550 is the PE90.
>>
>>30600148
It's used for training. The weapon is checked to be sur it has no ammo and then tape is added so we are sur it is not dangerous and we can aim people with it.
>>
>>30593705
Fulfilled its purpose of being a major upgrade over the FAL.
>>
>>30600207
o i see

so if somebody loaded it the tape would break

gotcha
