First handgun, yes.
I have a couple shotguns and rifles.
I looked at other handguns, and read many reviews about this gun.. I'm a cheapskate, so I'm gonna buy the cheapest thing I can get. I bought my first mossberg 500 12g used for $150.. Then a marlin .22 rifle new for $270

I decided it would be nice to carry something around that was cheap, if for whatever reason it was taken away, its only a small loss vs a really nice gun and a bigger loss..

a hi-point isn't going to be too good to carry, it's big and awkward, and for all its size you only get 10 shots, whereas similar full-size handguns hold 15-18 rounds

So you want the pistol for what? A plinker? A range toy? To hold down a set of loose papers on your desk? Then sure, go for the cheapest thing you can get. Make "the least amount of money involved" your most important criteria.

The .45 ACP ones can use 1911 mags.
