Any love for the 3rd gen S&W semi autos?

I picked up a 5906 and love it.
The 3rd Gen S&Ws are never really discussed here and great guns for the money.

Its the most moder version (it has a rail)
TSW can mean tactical S&W or Team S&W. The Team guns, along with the Super 9 and 3566 were in .356 TSW, which had it not been for .40 suddenly becoming required for major power factor in competition, likely would have killed .357 sign in the womb. Its very hot 9mm
>>
>>30516692
A rail, and a LCI, which is basically them drilling out the very back of the barrel to show if there's brass in the gun or not.

The guns are also slide/frame mated.

Absolutely love mine. It's the pistol I started really learning to be worth a damn as a shot once I moved off .22 and the like. I recognize it's heavier than most, but it isn't prohibitive. Great, solid guns an a semi-1911 style, wish they still made some like it.

Also wish I could get one of the 10mm models.

(I'm aware this is 2nd gen, just the only picture I have offhand, they really do never get talked about)

Don't talk to me or my wife's son ever again.

Old Smith & Wessons are great and can be found for pretty cheap. I got my police trade in 5906 with adjustable Trijicons for 200 bucks. Carried a lot and shot very little. I included the rest of my old smith family too.
>>
>>30520576
>>30520602
apparently they still have the 3rd gen tooling and make replacement pistols for police precincts still stuck on the 3rd gen.

Sometimes the surplus from these orders is channeled through gander mountain and gunbroker.

They are the 5906 variant in 9mm with the decocker/no safety
>>
>>30520720
I wish they'd make just a limited line of upgraded 3rd gen steel guns.

Just update it to use M&P 17rd mags, and have a forward rail, it's all I'd want from a pistol.

>>30522454
Not only does this look good and now do I want to track down those grips, this just reminds me of one of the other things I love about the pistol. If you look at it as a 1911 derivative, it has more classic "custom" features than most baseline 1911's do. Undercut trigger guard, front strap and trigger guard stippling, good feed ramp, full length guide rod, better sights, etc.

Really, the only possible issue is I'd love a bigger beavertail and a smaller hammer, but it's not a particularly bothersome spur, so hey.
>>
>>30522631
The only things I'd change is maybe make the safety frame mounted, make the barrel, frame and slide one inch longer, then a forward rail.

Personally I love spur hammers, they look and feel nice to me.

Im about to turn 21, looking at these pistols.

I understand weight is a concern, but for actual dimensions, how hard is a full size to carry? Im 6'2, 201 lbs. Ive put my buddy's glock 19 on before, and i can make it disappear. For at least the first 6 months id be conceal carrying, it'd be jacket weather. finally, i live in small town, southeastern usa, where we legalized carry in side of public buildings, so im not too concerned about a little printing
>>
>>30525759
I'd say similar size to Glock 19, actually, maybe the grip's a little longer. The "Full size" 5906 could pretty much pass for a compact, really.

At 6'2 201, you should be good with a good holster and belt, if a little precarious. If you're in a cold environment with heavy/layered clothing you should be fine.
>>
>>30516694

>>30525759

on the glock 19, about 1/4 of my pinkie hangs off the bottom. it bugs the shit out of me, and this sounds fantastic. A magazine disconnect will stop or disconnect the trigger when no magazine is inserted, even when a magazine is inserted, these usually end up interfering with the triggerpull in some way.

The old Hi-Power pistols feature these, and common knowledge is that the trigger is radically improved by the removal of the magazine disconnect.

It's a dumb safety feature anyway.

i grew up shooting law enforcement model s&w pistols and never noticed anything either way. this is kind of being phased out mostly due to agencies adopting polymer wonder 9s or 40s with trigger safeties, although you can still order the lc9 with a magazine disconnect

>>30527968
Might have been good. The influences from the Smith, the 1911, and, maybe, even a Sig are clear.

Honestly, though, can't see it stacking up. And as much as I know about guns and types of guns, I've heard about the late 80's/90's lines of original Colt pistols like three times, maybe. I can't tell if they just made them in incredibly small batches or they were incredibly awful. I'm scared it's both.

What I heard is that the Double Eagle was really troubled early on, got a bad rep, and once Colt actually got around to fix the issues and make it a passable pistol, it's reputation was already ruined and Colt discontinued the thing rather shortly.

I'd go for the Smith & Wesson, it'd be a safer bet, and have better aftermarket support.

Would this be rad with flush 17rd mags or what?
>>
>>30533291
No, it's a decent bit hotter than the FBI lite.

For example, the Prvi 180gr 10mm JHP that was available from SG ammo for 40 cents tends to run 1050-1100fps from my S&W 1006.

With some domestic loads like Winchester, Remington, etc. It's weaker.
>>
>>30532936
>>30533198
This is 100% bullshit.

The 1006/1076 were designed for full-motherfucking-house 10mm and a steady diet of it, at that. Remember these are the pistols that had the recoil springs so stiff that some Female FBI agents couldn't even cycle the slide.

The Delta Elite, yes, has issues with full house 10mm but a lot of that was from the chamber design and Colts weaker factory recoil spring.

Yep. My buddy has one and we have shot tons of high octane 10mm through it as well as my g29.

Both guns just take whatever we throw at them (except for HSM "bear load" bullshit which won't cycle properly in my g29).

>>
>>30534185
Yes, full-on crazy horse loads are just fine in a 1006. Honestly a 1006 or other 10xx variant is the gold standard of being able to run hot ass 10mm in a semiauto.
I'm actually more worried about hurting my 610 with hot 10mm than the 1006. The 610's are fucking N-frames. That should say it all.

Brown bears can get pretty big but yes, if any semiauto cartridge has a chance I'd say it's hot 10mm. For Brown Bear I'd opt for hot 180 or 200gr loads personally. You need the projectile mass for inertia's sake to achieve good penetration on big ass critters.

I'd also skip the 1rnd extensions, a 1006 is a big son of a bitch as it is. With hot ass ammo it's not a bad idea to experiment with Wolff or other maker's beefier recoil springs.
>>
>>30534500
>You need the projectile mass for inertia's sake to achieve good penetration on big ass critters.
That's the thing though, those babies are solid copper, and the shape aids in penetration, in anything larger than .380ACP, they penetrate a human target too much to be considered safe.

For a bear though, you want a lot of penetration, so that's why I'm wondering if they'd be good bear medicine with the right powder load.

>>30534500
>I'd also skip the 1rnd extensions, a 1006 is a big son of a bitch as it is
I don't think I'd be CC'ing it if I was in burr country though, so size isn't quite the same concern.

The only good firearms made in America are niche firearms for fudds, like revolvers.
All the good stuff is made in Europe. Soon all the good stuff will be made in Japan, just wait and see.

You're not going to be able to go to any gun store or range without seeing a wall of Honda guns selling for half the price for the same quality as an American brick

Would rebarrelling the .45ACP ones for .45 Super be a bad idea?

Really? I'd think they'd be able to take the abuse. Do they not have the chamber support?

Can't post pictures right now but my 1076 is just as much of a dream as the rest of my smith's. I'll. Take a pic and post them when i get home.

Bumping so we can see it. Im really eyeing the lionheart lh9, which is a descendant of the 59series. Kinda.

But a 5904 would be pretty nice too. Its a size i can carry, but i dont think I could carry an all steel gun like an 06

>>30549907
How much do you know about .45super? Unless the barrel had shitty chamber support to begin with it wouldn't need a new barrel since .45super is externally identical to .45auto. A rebarrel would just be a fully supported .45auto barrel.

Either way you would need new springs for the recoil spring and possibly the may and mainspring.

Same here, it's pretty attractive. I want to know how that DA+ trigger feels

Found my 422 in a pawn shop last week in pretty much new shape with the original box for 250 out the door. How do you like yours?

>>30558949
That's a pretty good price. Mine shoots well, haven't had any ftf or fte but i haven't shot any more than 50 rounds through it either
