So what is a good deer (and elk, maybe) rifle, in bolt action?

Is 30-06 ok for that?

Also, what's a good brand of not very expensive scopes for deer hunting?

pic always /k/ related.

30-06 would be fine. If you are serious about elk hunting, maybe consider a 300WinMag or 7mmRemMag. Any of the budget rifles, save Remington, will be okay. Personally, I would lean more towards the Savage Axis, though the Marlin XL7, Mossberg Patriot, and Winchester XPR are all generally okay.

Most cheap scopes are made on contract by Chinese companies and can vary from model to model. Most 3-9x40 Chinkshit is servicable, though not really good. If you can, buy a Redfield.

What about Nikon? Aren't they Japanese? I hear that the Chinese and Japanese don't get along very well.

30-06 is fine.

You can buy one of Savage's rifle packages at almost any gun store that sells hunting rifles for very cheap, and Savage makes genuinely good rifles made in America.

A Savage Axis II XP would probably be something up your ally.

Pic related are also really nice but the price is going to go up when you factor in a scope + rings.

For scopes I would recommend Redfield, which is Leupold's entry level brand that practically the same.

And yes, 30-06 is great for deer and elk. Don't listen to retards on here that think if you shoot an elk with anything short of a 300 RUM you're not going to break it's skin.

Country of origin depends on model, parts made wherever. For example, the M223 scope is made in the Philippines. Their more expensive stuff is usually Japanese, but I am sure there are imported components or something.

I mentioned Redfield mostly for their price and not being terrible. A cheap scope for me is under $200, preferably under $100. I have a Kaspa I paid $70 for that is okay. If you can swing it, a Vortex may be worth it.

30-06 is honestly big enough for most American game. It is used not uncommonly on polar bear, so it'll be fine for elk.

Just don't think you are hot shit with your sniper rifle and take 400yrd+ shots at every elk you see. The rifle may be capable of it, but are you? We don't need more crippled elk.

.30-06 is just dandy for elk
As is .308 and .270

Ruger, Sako and Savage all make some very nice basic bolt guns. Avoid Remington desu, bad quality in general and the safety is known to trip the sear.

ProTip for elk btw, the meat isn't too fatty so if frozen properly, it can last a very long time.

You can take deer with .223, that'll work, but I'd step up to a .270 for elk simply because they're large, dense, meaty creatures.

Just 600-700 is a pretty good budget for a basic rifle, Famicom.
