Cheap stuff is always light, and really any .38 not listed as +P. Wadcutter/semi-wadcutter will leave nice holes on paper to watch your hits.

The 130gr FMJ and 148gr HBWC are the two lightest. But in a big L frame anything will do.

Depends. An L frame with rental shop grips won't be very ergonomic for a small-handed shooter, especially a new one.

Make sure to lie to him and tell it's single action only and he has to cock the hammer before every shot. Make him go full cowboy.

Before you finish at the range, I'd have him try a few .357 just to get the feel.

Buy just whatever basic lead and jacketed rounds, most are very light recoiling, .38 Special is very mild in an all steel gun.
