What does Denmark need with 60+ F-16s?

Its whole nation's population is less than half that of Moscow.
>>
Why not. Israel has more F-15/F-16 per capita than Denmark and unlike the danes, they shared the border against incompetent arabs instead of Russia
>>
>>30488708
You might to take a look at a map there chief.
>>
>>30488662
>What does Denmark need with 60+ F-16s?

You dont. Thats why Denmark will buy ~40 F-35As in the near future.

The operating costs of 40 F-35As will however be similar to those of 60 F-16s.

All of Europe got curbstomped by Germany and it took the rest of the world years to unfuck that situation.

Denmark surrendered after that time because they knew fighting was completely pointless. Better surrender than have your country mauled in a fight you know you can't win.

You can hardly hold it against them for surrendering.

Russia has done some really sketchy mock bombing runs against Bornholm in recent years. It makes a lot of sense for Denmark to have the ability to protect Bornholm and the Faeroe islands with their air force.

They sent in their navy special forces with helicopters to deal with some sea shepherd hippies a while back.

Denmark had the highest ratio of killed Germans to killed nationals of any country, if official numbers are to be believed. Heck, German soldiers have even later stated that they were choked and surprised that the Danes were fighting back and hadn't surrendered preemptively.
Sure, we would've stood no chance if it was an actual war, but if Denmark had still been the size it was hundreds of years ago, odds are most Germans would be speaking danish now.

We only have 30. We just signed a wildly debated agreement to buy 27 F35's. Boeing even had a public PR campaign with billboards and all to sway public opinion towards the F18.

The billboard reads "10.000 Danish jobs with Super Hornet"

>Do you think they should have gone with another plane? In that case which?

Of the 3 planes that were considered, the F35, F18 and the Eurofighter, the F35 does seem to be the best multi-role plane and therefore the best choice.

I simply think that in the light of increased Russian aggression and no end in sight of military conflicts in the Middle East we should expand our military budget.

> Do you know about anything specific that will have to be canned or delayed because of the F35 costs yet?

No specifics yet, but the army is searching for a new LMG, so now it's probably gonna be the cheapest one.
Our artillery is from the 60's (I read that they can only drive 100m before breaking down) an is in dire need of a replacement, but that seems pretty far out right now.

All in all we should spend the money that a modern capable military cost.

Still a great plane, but the F-16 MLUs are getting old. The airframes don't have much flight time left and the avionics are getting outdated.
The Netherlands has the same F-16 and they couldn't operate their F-16s in Syria because the F-16 MLUs lack satellite comms.

Tbh I am curious how Denmark (and also Belgium) are going to work with the fact that they have to wait like 10 years before they'll receive F-35s in operational condition to replace their F-16 fleet, which probably doesn't have much flight hours left. They're so late to the F-35 party that they probably haven't even seen the inside of one, yet most other countries who ordered the F-35 are already testing the plane and/or training pilots and maintenance crew.
>>
>>30493422
Denmark was part of the group of nations that started funding the F35, so we will probably get access to some early test versions.
>>
>>30493422
Seriously? They can likely start getting delivery in a couple years, not a decade. Italy, Netherlands, and UK have already taken in units for initial testing.
>>
>>30488662
Small countries syndrome
>>
>>30493501
Not that anon, but I imagine he means entire replacement of their F-16 fleet, not first delivery.

At LM's predicted FRP rate (17 aircraft a month), production is going to take almost 15 years.

That said, they'll probably put priority in small orders rather than filling the ~1,700 US order entirely.
>>
>>30493498
>>30493501
>They can likely start getting delivery in a couple years, not a decade. Italy, Netherlands, and UK have already taken in units for initial testing.

I didn't mean initial delivery, I meant in operational condition. Denmark will be 5+ years behind on those countries you mentioned when it comes to testing the plane and training the pilots/crew. Belgium even more, since they haven't made a decision yet. Meanwhile, both of their F-16 fleets are at the end of their lifespan already.

No, all the Danish gov could agree on is how much they could spend on the new fighters and to try to get at least 21 of them. That 27 is as of now just a wishful up-to-number if the agreed budget allows them to get that many. The thing is however, even getting 21 is not that certain at this point because unlike EF and Boeing that submitted a binding offers, LM opted not to which has put the Danes in a peculiar situation where they have already ranked F-35 to be the cheapest fighter in the """"competition"""" but they don't know how much each plane and associated gear needed to operate them is actually going to cost

No it wasn't. French won the technical evaluation, and Swedes trumped that by offering economically better deal.

I think it makes sense they're getting F-35s.

They can't have quantity no matter what they buy, so they need something that can punch above its weight and has a chance to survive long enough to get a good number of missions in.

The F-35 has a record of handily beating anything thrown at it in simulation combat, so it's probably the best choice they have really.

It makes sense to me that the danes would pick the F35, since the Danish Airforce was already part of the JSF/F35 project while it was being developed and tested early on.

Something that is common everywhere?

I mean, you are not going to pretend the average European can name all 50 American states or 85 Russian subjects on a map are you?

I recall hearing about the soviets being beaten so badly by a bunch of Bornholm farmers, that they gave it back to Denmark. They didn't want it.

In an absolute sense they are though.

Moreover, suggesting that raiding goat farmers somehow qualifies as real war experience is preposterous. In fact it's been a recurrent observation that all this gearing towards fighting insurgencies has left many nations less capable of fighting a real war, because they require two very different approaches.

Odd when I lived in Europe I would be amused by Euros who did not know who bordered what in the Americas. When I get in Europe I'm always amused by how locals thought a 50km drive was a big deal.

Planning on a defense I think. Enough Aircraft to pose some kind of defensive threat. Honestly they really need more but that's what NATO is for. With Putin in and Russia expanding it's not a abstract.

Mind you if I pick my bike and do cyclist things I don't mind about 80kms

On the other hand if I have to pick bus+train+local transport to get to my workplace (around 60kms) I get easily pissed

If other people is driving and lets say the distance between my town and the sea is around 30kms I fucking fall asleep or the boredom skyrockets to the unknown

There is a lot of Geography out there folks, I don't expect people to know obscure Texas towns and Europe is chock full of places to go
( with lots of history). It's just not as important to me as it is to you. When I watch the weather report I get my local, not yours. And my local area has a pop density of about 45/km2. European countries have much higher densities. My normal weekly travel radius would be crossing several countries in Europe. So don't expect Joe Ordinary to know every detail. It is about size... Europe is small and compressed. You can have 8 native languages in a four hour drive. Modern fighter aircraft can cross European countries in the time it would take a ready crew to get a aircraft in the air. Having enough aircraft to defend your country against a emergent threat is complicated by short distances.

>The airframes don't have much flight time left and the avionics are getting outdated.

Is there an absolute limit to the duration a single airframe can be kept airworthy with an unlimited budget? Is there a point where the frame itself is too worn?
>>
>>30503427
Well, you could probably do total overhauls that extend it another few thousand hours, but it'll be way more expensive each time. Fighters are race cars to a Cessna's Honda Civic.
>>
>>30503427
>Is there a point where the frame itself is too worn?

Yes. While you can take out an engine and replace it easily once its gone past its servicable life, airframes gain stress shearing and fractures that would eventually make them too dangerous to fly.

This happens faster if you're flying them under high G loads.
