I have paper thin walls so I used reduced recoil 00 buck. Because you have the extra cash look into a Mossberg 590A1 has a longer tube for more shells and ghost rings.

that said, you can get a cheap semi auto rifle like a ruger AR or a rem 870 or a mossberg500
as for ammo, get a box of hollowpoints that will seem expensive compared to plinkin ammo
get small buckshot or that 'defender' type slug+buck shells

Well, for your first HD gun I would say a Remington 870 or mossberg 500, however if you feel like shelling out a little more cash, I would get a vepr 12, they generally run about $750-$850 and they're stupid fun and good for HD

Op here thanks for everyone replying I'll look into all of the suggestions an see what works best for me. It seems that the mossberg 500/590a1 is the most recommended. Thank you everyone for b the help.
