I'm at a point where I'm pretty happy with my setup. Next I need to get my sling sorted and I'll be ordering a kill flash for the PA prism, and eventually a MD-ADS with AD QD mount. How am I doing so far? Please forgive the photo, as soon as my phone gets remotely close to anything but full sun it goes full potato.

We sold at at the shop I used to work at to a guy that shoots a lot. The action is under so much more stress than it was designed for that effectively every single part on gun is a wear item.

In 6 months he shot out a barrel, had to replace the bcg, buffer spring, and a handful of small components. The owners manual lists almost every part on the gun on the maintenance replacement schedule with lifespans of 500 to 2000 rounds.

Just buy a fucking bolt gun if you're shooting a belted magnum.

Working on gucci'ing my rifle.

Just got the email from V7 weapons systems that their port doors are back in stock.

Are there any potential downsides to the titanium version? It's about 4 grams heavier and $20 more expensive than the aluminum one, but I'm concerned it would cause accelerated wear to my upper. I just don't know much about Ti. Brittle?

The gas rings need to be changed every 200 rounds or something. The barrel lasts less than 1000, like 800. Thats average for barrel life on all belted magnums, but you can only buy replacements from NEMO and they are fuck expensive.

The entire rifle is basically scrapped at like 2000-3000 rounds unless you want to spend as much or more as a new one to refurbish it. A bolt gun only ever needs the barrel replaced, nothing else.

Except for the extractor and ejector (and the ejector is caliber independent, literally everything that isn't an Enfield or clone of an Enfield will wear out an ejector in ~1200 cycles). And the magazine spring, for whatever reason literally nobody uses good springs so those're good for ~500 cycles despite the fact that detachable mag springs last 5x that long minimum, even on cheap mags. And then if you have anything other than an M70, model 77, or Sako your bolt handle will probably break off around the ~3000 round mark, regardless of caliber, or sooner if you installed a "tactical" bolt knob; all because everyone brazes or straight up solders (not even silver solders) their bolt handles on now instead of welding or using an integral.

If you have a Remington/Savage or a clone of a Remington/Savage, you're doing well if your extractor lasts 200 rounds with a belted magnum. There's a reason the M16 and Sako extractor conversions are so popular.

Some lubes get sticky and viscous in cold temperatures, so choose your oil wisely (I like FP10, the AMU uses it and it's cheap and temp-stable).

However, some powders don't like temperature extremes. Some of the currently available factory M193 clones fall in this category, and ofc if you handload it's a concern. Expect somewhat lower velocities (and as a result zero shift) and more fouling in extreme cold, and *potentially* cycling issues with ammo that was fine in warm weather.

I don't like side mounting because it increases the width of the rifle so much. Putting in on the bottom obscures your view of all the controls.

With an ACOG, just mount it a far back on the rail as you can. Unless you use a c-clamp type grip that would obscure the laser. Then mount it all the way forward. Only issue with all the way up against the front Buis is it obscures some of the field of vision, but not enough to really matter.

So I got hired onto a police department (don't do it, I hate it already, didn't realize it would be such pleb work)

Anyway they let you keep your own AR in the patrol vehicle. The issued one is an m&p 15, but after reading reviews apparently it's considered just an okay AR. What's the most reliable one I can get with a budget of around $800?

I don't know shit about ARs, I was an AK guy prior to the job. But since it's the only option I want to own one and be able to train with it since my life may actually depend on it. Any recommendations on attachments is also appreciated.

Rifles are like computers.

You spend a bit of money to get something usable and spend even more to make it good. What you spend in total will be more expensive than if you straight out built it yourself.

If one's lookin to get an AR in a big boy caliber, what is a reliable brand to look at?

I've heard that Ar-10 type rifles tend to be less reliable, so it got me thinking that if I'm on a budget it's probably better to just stick with 5.56

Almost all ARs at that pricerange are utterly reliable.

Including the M&P15.

You wouldn't really be gaining any reliabilty with another 800 dollar AR.

You could however gain the following if you built one,

Softer recoil and less parts wear with a Midlength gas system on a 16"

Better accuracy with a better barell.

Better accuracy with a free float handguard, though nominal.

A more comfortable rifle with furniture you enjoy shooting with, if the department doesn't let you do this with issued rifles.

If they don't let you modify the issued one at all, you could put in better extractors/BCG springs/buffer parts to improve reliability, but IMO this is not needed at all on a milspec quality rifle

there's thing called CLP you can buy it in little bottles at your local gun store

just put some of that in it and you can shoot the gun a lot (40 thousand rounds) without cleaning it

I don't think you understand how reliable AR15s really are.

When you get your gun, degrease it and put on a coat of CLP, swab the barrel, ect...

Then put it down and don't worry about it for a few weeks, if you're shooting very often and a lot put some new CLP on it as much as your heart desires.

The day after your birthday do a detailed clean every year and you'd be fine, or every 6 months, or every month.

It just depends on how much you shoot. And if you feel like there is too much carbon, you can literally take the BCG out, grab a wrag and wipe it down a bit.

AR's will never be 100% clean after you fire them, nor should they be.
