I use PMC M193 in 5.56, got pretty good accuracy today that I will confirm tommorow.

PMC 55g .223 sucked asshole and I'm convinced that was an ammo issue. It also chronos at less than 2700fps out of a 16".

Used to plink with M855 but that was dumb so I'll save mine.

someone else was making those carriers for colt and they stopped using them.

the C marking is rolled into place on "real" colt carriers.

yes i undersatnd the implications of calling that a fake carrier but it's exactly as i suspected. it's when colt tried to contract out to other companies because it was post sandy hook.

Yea, it's a pistol range but almost everything is rifle rated so I can set it up out back for AR or milsurp rifle practice.

I eventually want a whole shooting gallery, so i buy a little every year to add to it. The Texas Star was this year's buy, polish plate rack hopefully next year.

so I went to the gun range today and got a 100yd lane. I was trying to teach my mom to shoot at 20yds and the guy at the range got all mad because there is a "50yd minimum". My mom and I were taking turns. Then he tells us we have to put it to 50yd or go to the 25yd lanes.

3/8 AR500. Figure non-magnum pistol at 10, rifle at 100. This Texas star is 3/8ths too. They also make a 22lr version.

You can buy angled rifle steel targets which you can safely engage at much closer ranges too.

I was looking at low end retail AR's, and ended up going with a S&W M&P Sport II.

After the fact, I was asking someone at a local fun store about why they wanted so much more for the M&P Regularz vs. Sport II version, and was told "Muh MilSpec", and chrome lined bore.

But the Sport II has a Melonite treated BBL, inside and out, which is supposed to be more bettah. Lower friction, no chipping, more durable, and higher Rockwell hardness.

The lower and upper on the Sport II are also made out of the same Aluminum alloy as the Regularz.

So once and for all, dispel the myth that it's not a bad fun, or tell me why the Regularz is better.

From what I've been seeing, a Melonite treated BBL is way better than chrome lining.

I'm not really a prepper but I figure it'd be best to stick with one rifle, and if the AR can put people down hard at a longer distance that's what I'd want.

I think the only advantage I'd have with my AK is I could beat someone to death with it, and I the rifle itself lasts longer.

Maybe more reliable in the field but the difference is pretty negligible afaik

Unlike 7.62 or 5.45, there is a hell of a lot of variety in ammo.

Some of the military loads cause a crapload of cavitation (m855a1, mk262, mk318) but are expensive. Some are inferior to 5.45's yaw but super cheap and decently effective out to ~200m (m193).

But, unlike the x39's, there is a large variety of not horribly expensive but good expanding softpoints (no, those no-name "softpoint" loads from Tula/Wolf/Barnaul do not actually reliably expand, they've all been tested). These leave horrific wounds and reliably expand out to ridiculous distances (500-700m depending on barrel length) while being very accurate, and start at 50cpr.

Then you have the total "range ammo" shit: M855 (despite its cost it sucks for killing things) and your generic 55/62gr FMJ's and OTM's.

So, the tl;dr version is:
>if you shoot 5.56 at living targets, if you're using anything that might maybe even think about doing anything other than EXPANDING (not fragmenting, not tumbling) you're doing it wrong

I was fooling around with an AR at my lgs and it felt good. Made a fool out of myself when it came to that little bolt release button, and I thought I broke it when I pulled the bolt back and tried to push it forward, but when I figured it all out I enjoyed it. My only complaint was that it felt like a toy, but I'd probably get used to it

>>30403927
No prob. I like both AR's and AK's, but if I had to fight with one or the other and could use something other than issued ammo (M855) it would be an AR hands-down.

At least in part because I'm confident in my ability to reliably hit man-sized targets out to 350m offhand or out to 500m from prone supported with it, I've never been able to shoot AK's that well (in part due to ammo, and in part due to dogshit-bad sights and an almost total lack of appropriate magnified optics)
>>
>>30403965
Use your ballistic calculator to find out what 300 is.
It might be close to 25

>>30403955
It just helps recovery and muscle, tendon, and joint health.
>>
>>30403965
Because with mk262 from a 10.3", a 50m zero will be closer to on at 150 than 200, and nowhere near on at 300 if you zero at 25.
>>
>>30403982
Yea that's one disadvantage the AK has.

Alot of people think that just because you can get railed parts for almost all along the top of the rifle, that it's as good with sights as AR's though. But the dust cover moves alot, and the gas tube will melt your optics, so that leaves you with just the rail and I guess the rear sight block

I mean, picatinny-topped side rails are a thing but those almost always put the optic up high enough you end up with (at best) a chinweld. Not conducive to consistent shooting even with a "good" optic, and the good combat optics have short enough eye relief to be an issue with side rails.

didn't reall all the other fags but let me simplify it for you since these tards dont really know how to do that.

5.56's effectiveness comes from its ability to fragment. The dirty little secret is that it wont fragment at longer distances (specifically velocities slower than a certain figure i.e. 2700fps)

thats pretty much it

i'm strictly speaking military rounds, i know how to cater to an ak fag, everything you guys do is military oriented. you dont really have as many non military ammo options as we do so i'm giving you a mil-centric explanation.

tl;dr mil ammo in the AR-15 relies on fragmentation to be the most effective. that fragmentation is based on speed of the round when it hits the target.
>>
>>30404417
Accuracy potentially, barrel life not really.

It's a tradeoff between a surface treatment (no additional thickness/coating in bore) and a really fucking hard, fairly thick coating.
>>
>>30404402
The problem with melonite is that we have no idea how it performs in the long run. It could last longer than chrome, it could not.
>>
>>30404441
There are military rounds that fragment reliably down to very low FPS's

Mk262 for one, and provided Mk318 is what I think it is(An OTM 62g) then it should as well.

Dunno, The melonite stuff changes the molecular structure of the chrome / moly the barrel is made of, at least to a certain depth. It isn't a coating, but not sure it wears off unless you've put elebenty thousands of rounds through it.

Chrome is a surface treatment.

QPQ is a surface treatment. It treats the surface of the barrel without adding anything (insert argument over how many ten-thousandths of an inch you have to go before it no longer counts as "surface", whatever).

Chrome is a lining. you are physically adding a layer.

Both mk318 and M855A1 have a cannelure.

mk318 has a solid gilding metal rear, only in front of the cannelure is lead-cored. It basically splits at the cannelure, the butt of the bullet penetrates while the lead-cored nose fragments.
>>
>>30404683
Diff. Guy. Speaking to accuracy. Chrome lining adds material to the inside of the bore over all the grooves and landings which is why it is said to affect accuracy adversely. It changes the inner dimensions. Qpq is not a lining. It hardens to barrel. So a shitty barrel is still shitty, a decent barrel still decent, a good barrel still good, but very hard.

>Diff.

And, now we're back to my original shitpost:

You can buy a S&W M&P Beleebit for $800+, or you can buy an Sport II which is pretty much the same thing, minus some chrome, but plus Mennonite, with identical fucking receivers and the same barrel material, for hundreds less.

tl:dr: marketing.

If you want an AR, and that's what my original post is about, don't buy the hype. Do the research. You can get a fairly inexpensive, but not shit [polymer lower] AR for not a lot of bux.

That's your starter. Then, you move up. Do the research. It's not a snobby club, despite what some folks post in the AR Generals.

That's all.

What was this post about then?

>>30404690

This post indicated a different bullet design due to Mk318Mod1 having a cannelure, which would obviously lend itself better to increased fragmentation.

Now I'm being told that the two variants use the same projectile.

mk262 mod 0 and mod 1 have different projectiles dumbo. mod 0 is non cannelured, mod 1 has a cannelure. the cannelure is the KEY point in fragmentation

What rail do you have?

Further explanation.

I had assumed that Mk318 as a whole was barrier blind due to bonding, as my apparently retarded USMC infantry friend told me.

It is infact not bonded, but still "barrier blind" by design due to the solid brass base of the bullet.

>>
>>30405151
It's a good day.
>>
>>30405085
You're mixing up mk262 and mk318. They're different rounds.

Mk262 has, through its various iterations, used 3 (and maybe 4) different bullets.
>pre-contract testing
Used 75gr Hornady and 77gr Nosler, neither with a cannelure
>mod0/undesignated
Used 77gr Nosler or 77gr SMK, neither with a cannelure
>mod1
Uses exclusively 77gr SMK with cannelure
>mod 2/mod2 provisional
Uses 70gr Tac-TX with brown tip, monolithic copper tipped hollowpoint, has grooves in the shank and doesn't fragment but is a purpose-built expanding bullet

Now, as far as I know, there are only 2 variants on the mk318
>mod0
62gr split-core (monolithic copper rear, lead-core front) hollowpoint loaded with ball powder with a traditional roll crimp and green sealant at the crimp
>mod1
same bullet but switched to a Hodgdon "extreme" extruded powder (some speculate it's CFE223), roll crimp, NO sealant

As far as I know the reason they did this was to reduce the temperature sensitivity of the round. Ball powders are normally pretty good, but the newer "extreme" extruded powders are supposed to differ by less than 3% across a very wide temperature range (-100*C to +100*C, which is ~neg148*F to 212*F). Now I don't believe that getting a round to literally the boiling point of water isn't going to drastically change its burn characteristics and I think those claims are exaggerated, but they are VERY good powders.

>>
>>30405239
>NO sealant
this i did not know about sost mod1... why did they go with this? roll crimp + sealant + powder change might cause an overpressure situation?
>>
>>30405254
I like my car.
>>
>>30405256
Probably redundant with how deep a groove they have to crimp into, or at least that'd be my guess.

Also keep in mind mod1 is still a provisional round, hasn't been finalized and they might add it later.

It appears to have a cannelure, but it's not to mk262 spec. Black Hills doesn't crimp the primer pockets on non-contract loads and it'll probably be loaded a little cooler as a result.

What're you looking for?

That one you linked is very very good as an accuracy load and would do fairly well as a defensive load.

If you're after something bonded, I recommend Federal LE barrier blind (also sold as Fed Fusion MSR and Speer Gold Dot, exact same load with the exception the Gold Dot uses nickel plated brass, which is a waste).

It can occasionally be found as low as $0.50 a round and PSA almost always has it for $0.60/rd

My source on the non-crimped primer pockets is I have some and reload the brass.

As far as them being loaded cooler, it's just speculation on my part. A crimped primer should, in theory, allow them to load the rounds hotter before they have to worry about blowing out the primer. I've shot SOME real contract mk262 and the primers are flattened AF, a sign of high pressure, but wasn't able to keep the brass.

ALL US contract ammo has crimped primer pockets by DoD guidelines, including Federal law enforcement loads.

Yea, I think 13.7 would work, and if it's slightly off, then you can use some extra shims.
Actually, if you have the muzzle device and the suppressor, you can see how far down the suppressor goes on the device, then see where the threads need to end to fit tightly
