Thought about putting together an SBR in a backpack to keep in the car in case getting home from work becomes the mog mile. Was thinking SCAR 16, then realized, oh wait, I have a short gas action .358 winchester FAL barrel under the bed and needs a home.

So im going that route.

Anyone have any clue where I could find reloading data from T/C pistol shooters? Trying to get an idea if I should keep the barrel at ~13" long or if cutting it down to 11" would shave off to much velocity. I cant find shit.
>>
>>30404446
Check the table toward the end. You don't actually lose that much velocity, on average only like 25fps/inch. The test only went down to 16.5in (for obvious reasons), but the data seems to fit a pretty defined curve.

http://rifleshooter.com/2014/12/308-winchester-7-62x51mm-nato-barrel-length-versus-velocity-28-to-16-5/

>>30404483
Familiar with that. Ive found data for one .308 load down to 6"

.358 is a horse of a different color.

Im probably going to keep it as it is now, easier to cut it later if it doesnt fit in whatever bag im looking to get to cover it up with.

2MB, 4160x2340px
Initial idea was to not SBR it.
Make it as short as possible that with a pinned KAK flashcan that it would be 16", SBR it later, get it cut and install a 9mm lantac dragon.

Think next month ill just order a DSA forged reciever and start the paperwork now. Should be able to have the stamp by the holidays-ish.

Also want to play around with loading up some 9mm bullets in a .358, see what kind of velocity I can get.
>>
>>30404532
I feel like .358 would suffer even less than .308 from a reduction in barrel length, simply because of the fatter bore. You could probably do an OSW job on it and still have a very capable weapon.
>>

277KB, 1024x768px
>>30404615
OSW comes in 11" or 13"
IIRC the barrel is like 13.3" or something like that. And yeah, the extar bore volume would make it suffer less than .308 from the chop.

Ill just have to set up a chrony and see what im getting after its all said and done. I didnt put the gas block on, the guy who made the barrel for me did (Shilen blank), removing it would make getting the chop/rethread done much easier for the smith, cheaper for me, and more likely to have the threads concentric. Some FAL gas blocks require acts of god to get off.

I suppose my other option would be to say fuck it, get it cut now, build the whole thing up, dont buy the stock till the stamp comes in.
>>
>>30404765
I think that sounds like a decent idea. Got any notion of what stock you'll put on it once the stamp comes in? Something classic like the para folder? Or do you have something more high-speed-low-drag in mind?

The Rhodies would cut the carry handles off their FALs because they'd rattle. They also started painting their rifles with vehicle paint because captured terrorists would tell interrogators that they were easy to spot because of their long, black rifles. They also finally lost because their strategic oil reserves got destroyed, iirc. That and the sanctions.

Ideally yes.
What /brg/ actually does is argue that your choices of form and function are inherently inferior to my patently superior ideas on the matter.

People who wanted a cheap semi auto .308 who bought a ptr for low price of rifle and mags get lumped together with those that, is there another reason for liking it? Idk. Anyway.

Should we all get along? That would be sweet, but this isn't utopia.

Buying a Century FAL is like playing Russian Roulette with a revolver that has 3/6 cartridges, but instead of your skull the gun is pressed against a stack of $800.

If you can afford a new SA58, I'd go DSA. If you want a party, then buy a parts kit and build it yourself or find someone that's built their own. You won't regret it (probably).

DSA Cheapo: $999
DSA SA58: $1500 give or take
Century: $800- $1000 (I've seen them go for more at gun shows, damn rednecks)
Garage: $300- $400 for receiver and ~$400- $600 for a barreled parts kit, plus whatever tools you don't already have. Pre-made garage guns usually go for right at $1000, maybe a tiny bit higher.

Entirely unrelated, but Faker ain't doin' too hot rn. Shame.

If price isnt an issue, get optics that dont give a fuck about being rattled.

>>
>>30411040
GI issue walnut. It you notice an opening between the wood and receiver above the trigger, that's where the fire selector would be on a full auto rifle.
>>
>>30411130
I don't remember. I think it's a standard issue scope mount. It's heavier than it needs to be. There are better out there. Check Springfield Armory. I think they have some.
>>
>>30411196
You might want to check the mount and not the rings. M14 mounts are notoriously prone to shifting.
>>
>>30411402
I did. I'm sure it's the rings. They were made for a Weaver rail and that's a Pic rail mounted. I tried to make it work but they came loose while shooting.

A few companies make FAL accessories and aftermarket parts. Magpul, DSA, and Vltor (I think) to name a few, but there are others. You can trick out your rifle pretty hard.

Idk about aftermarket triggers, but there are plenty of people who do trigger jobs on their FALs to lower the pull weight.

Some tools, like a decent vise and a receiver wrench (among others) are necessary. It's not AR-tier Legos or anything, but it's not super hard like an AK or HK build. Most parts kits will include all the shit you'll need expect the upper receiver. If there isn't a barrel, then you can buy blanks from plenty of folks.

There are a few ways one could favor an AR10. And these are subjective. They have a bigger aftermarket (barrels in particular), they can have a longer recoil impulse (but more recoil), they can be a little more accurate (until the last/car comes out).

That is about it, and even then it's filleting red cunt hairs.

Have plenty of 5.56 and Milsurp rifles, but I've been looking at that 18" M1A as my first battle rifle. As far as M1A's go it seems the best for me,but I know next to nothing on PTR's. Everywhere I read I see so many mixed views.

With the PTR or M1A? I've read some bad things on reliability and accuracy with the PTR. But from what I've learned with AR-15's over the years is the amount of total BS some people post on forums.
The M1A I've read nothing really bad on, it's only a matter if it's worth the price.
While I love the M1A's appearance, if I can have a rifle as reliable and as accurate for hundreds less I'll take that.
>>
>>30425839
I should explain a bit more with the PTR. One of the accuracy issues that kept coming up was how quickly groups opened up.

But honestly I have no idea how any battle rifle handles heat issues with the barrel.

Werest I thou, I wouldn't be worried about PTR reliability as much as the M1As.

Between the two, M1A has superior aesthetics and accuracy potential (potential being the key word here). However, an AR10 could probably beat either of those in the accuracy department.

It's a $900 hunk of sheet metal and plastic that runs on Teutonic brutality. Mine is decently accurate (2-3MOA) with cheap blasting ammo (MKE, Silver Bear, etc.) though all of the big three have relatively lightweight barrel profiles so their accuracy under sustained fire will suffer. Recoil impulse is not as bad as some people make it; more of a shove than a kick. It weighs about 10-10.5# loaded, which isn't great but welcome to the Cold War. Despite being 60 years old it looks like it should be blasting xenos in the 41st millennium.

Overall 10/10 would buy again.
>>
>>30426666
I own a PTR a3R and a Springfield M1a standard 22"

The PTR groups about 3-4MOA with gold medal match ammo, the M1A groups 2MOA with it.

Is that inch at 100 yards worth $300+? Probably not. I also may have a lemon of a PTR, or a decent M1A. That's my personal experience with both models, though, as someone who owns both.

Also if you call PTR about warranty work they'll do their best to talk you out of it.

It barely matters, PTR's are still in spec, they'll wear with the gun.

On HK91's/G3's rollers would have to be continually replaced until the end of it's service life, which coincided for the most part with the end of the barrel life.
From what I barely understand, and correct me HK guys if I'm wrong here, is that once the barrel goes and your on the last rollers for bolt gap, the gun has to be rebuilt - new trunnion and barrel at least

Price is a big deal to an extent, but you have to weigh out price and quality. Quality obviously being the most important.

BCM makes some of the better AR rifles and AR parts in the business, as does Colt. Give everyone a break with your gear snob bullshit lol.

mm muh $3,000 AR!

All of the raw materials come from a handful of forges in the country. Most of the parts are machined by the same fucking companies they're just stamped with different logos. Obviously some are machined better than others, but most people know where to look.

Noveske and other "sooper dooper high end" companies are not the only producer of quality rifles and parts, period.

like maybe inna dirt road/bike trail

actual dirt mud with a loadout? ill believe it when i see it

which i googled and saw this and laughed
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KOF-xyMi8U

drums will hold mud and dirt when they get submerged or just generally a decent build up doing off roading you will have to separate the drum to clean them its antiquated as fuck which is why no one uses them anymore lol

also as >>30435510 said they really do go to shit quick in adverse conditions which rear drum is bad news bears seeing as you do most of your off road braking with the rear

>>30435360

>Projecting my budget and desires

Sorry but I didn't dog anyone's rifle or gear, let alone act like my budget and gear was a gift from God.

All I meant was that dropping a month's salary on a rifle doesn't make it "the only good rifle" money can buy.

I said my rifle was tits, which it is. The best? No. A rifle is only as good as the shooter behind it, whether it be a Bushy or a Noveske.

So get fucked m8.

>>30436067
Would j have to buy the barrel separate and get it installed by a gunsmith?
>>
>>30436087
Youd have the find the barrel. I think six made it stateside and went for like $3k a pop
It installs easy peasy., can you torque four screws?

The Mk20, when it comes out will need you to torque six screws.
