I just bought an AK and I haven't even touched it yet but I feel like all non AK owners are degenerate plebs.

But seriously, who makes the best 7.62x39 AK magazines for cheap (like steel USGI or Magpul for ARs) and which ammo do I stock up on now? I understand Magpul is looked down up for AKs. Is Tapco good?

I'm not gonna dig out a bunch of ammo cans from my closet for a pic. it really isn't that much when put into perspective, 1 or 2 thousand rounds a month for half a decade adds up and is an easy way to get a nice stash going. It isn't like I dropped $3000 on ammo all at once.

For the longest time the only guns of mine I was shooting were my AK (the Norinco, long before I got into 5.45) and vz so it made sense to buy a lot of 7.62x39 if it was the only caliber I was shooting.

Alright /akg/, (reposting)

Playing with ideas again on what to do with this rifle. This has always kind of been a back burner rifle, so my vision for it has changed a lot over the years as other rifles have joined the collection.

I'll be getting a drill press here shortly and therefore finally equipped to fuck with the FSP / Gas block. Here's what I'm thinking currently.

> TWS Dogleg dust cover / top rail.
> Venom Tactical gas block / front sight.
> UltiMAK M1B gas tube.
> Black polymer AK lower hand guard.
> Thread barrel for 1/2-28 and fit with my choice of muzzle device.

The idea is I can mount my optic (currently have a spare PA Microdot, SPARC II, and ACOG) on the TWS dogleg, and use the rail space on the ultimak for a light mount or sling point, etc.

I think it would also help this ugly fucker in the aesthetic department. What do you guys think?
>>
>>30372539
Tapco mags, specifically the slab sides beat the non metal magpuls in drop/abuse tests. They are also backed by free replacement when you do break one. The g2 trigger, slot brake, axis pin retainer work as intended. They do make some crap as well but I think the positives are often over looked.
>>
>>30373194
Just convert it to a 100 series with Russian parts. Those venom tactical GB suck and require you to file down the front sight post to make adjustments for zeroing it in.

>>
>>30373276
I don't disagree with that, clearly steel is better. It may not be worth it to replace them unless you have a small pile, to justify shipping. It feels like tapco gets thrown into shit tier, with company's like IO when it's not entirely accurate. They didn't innovate very well, but they gave ak enthusiasts something. They helped us get to this "year of the ak".

You're killing me with the spelling mistakes.

But as a serious answer to your question, I believe the simplicity, ruggedness, and loose tolerances (read: clearances) are what make the AK style/variants a favorite for me.

They are:

Extremely simple in design.

Very easy to take apart without special tools.

Superbly easy to clean and maintain.

Comfortable ergonomics and do not call for aftermarket components unless desired, by nature they run fine out of the box.

That's just my opinion.
>>
>>30373339
Thanks for your input.
I'll try not to mix your opinion when I build my personal rifle for not anyone but myself.
>>
>>30374742

So they are reliable in that they are low maintaince, easy to clean, and less likely to be jammed by their own fouling after excessive use?

>simplicity
>if AKM, muzzle brake is already built in

>i know that you said without saying the word reliability, but you're probably more likely to get hit by lightning just after winning 8 lotteries than that your AK jams.
>>
>>30374852
When I talk reliability om talking g about the ak never jams even when in shitty environments after 30 years meme. Ar15 beat aks in mud tests ever since glee time
>>
>>30374575
>Advantages
The only one that stands out is simplicity as far as inner workings. The more I learn about the AR design, the more I realize just how simple the AK is in comparison.

AR BCG has six separate components if you count the charging handle. AK has four (Not counting the op rod/piston separate because it's securely stuck). There are no springs that can potentially fly out and render you up shit creek innawoods.

After that it comes down to preference. I personally am more comfortable with the AK than I am with the AR, especially when it comes to irons. Folks who primarily use AK's enjoy a nice advantage when it comes to switching between rifle and handgun, since both involve lining up the front blade to a flat rear block.

>>30374742
>Superbly easy to clean and maintain.

You got it.

Ideally all you have to clean is the gas block occasionally because that's where carbon builds up.

Aside from that just oil and wipe everything down to prevent rust (barrel, chamber, fire control group, bolt carrier *except piston*)

CLP works wonders.

The VZ is a good rifle but I really see no reason to choose it over the AKM except for weight, which for bugging out or whatever you have in mind might be important. I mean it's a solid design but it's no more comparable to an AK than an AR. It's just whichever design you feel the most comfortable with and place the most stock in. The AR, AK, and VZ58 all have totally different operating mechanisms.

Tantal took them down off his website a long ass time ago but red alliance has had it archived there, whatever image hosting the OP was using must have expired or something

For cast/milled you can generally look at the contours of the steel and how it's machined. Pretty much any given cast part will have at least one surface that is just the raw casting and hasn't been machined and it's a dead giveaway. Also mold numbers are always a dead giveaway of course.

Cast vs milled AKM lower handguard retainers for example
>>
>>30375295
In that pic you can see that the sling loop on the left LHGR is the raw cast steel surface and hasn't been machined in any way, the one on the right was machined from a block. Some parts are hard to tell without holding them in your hands but if you have quality pics it's usually not impossible.

>bolt carrier *except piston*
>explain yourself.

It is not wise to leave oil on the face or around the piston head.

Hot fire and gas come in contact with the face of the piston and can cause oil left on it to gum up or foul, and eventually harden, not a great result.

Best thing to do with the piston and op rod is just wipe them clean, think of them like a a firing pin.

I don't like to use "poorfag" but you do know that magazines are fairly expensive in general. Ever buy SCAR 17 mags? Or how about VEPR 12 molot mags? Fuck, my FN-S pistol has mags that are like $40 a pop. my possible build according to whims and experience with my .308 vepr:

- Bullet guide to let gun accept x39 AK mags
- a new trigger assembly (my 308 vepr had an abysmal trigger and a ground down tapco g2 was far superior)

If you want to make it look like an AK, you need...
- slant cut to straight cut conversion piece
- wood or other pistol grip and buttstock
- handguard retaining clamp (lets you use ak style 2 piece handguards)
- matching handguard

carolinashootersupply.com is my chosen source for vepr parts. Any questions?

P.S. I think I may just do the bullet guide and leave the wood. its pretty.
>>
>>30379730

There is no way mine is as heavy as that. You could fart on the trigger and it would go off.
>>
>>30380122
>Bullet guide.
I hadn't thought of that. Will it still take regular Vepr x39 mags post-installation?
>New trigger.
Not a bad idea at all.

I thankfully have the stock think figured out courtesy of Carolina Shooter's supply. What a site.

I know this is heresy.. But I'm looking at the Magpul's Zhokov hand guard. Will I still need the new retaining clamp for it?
>>
>>30380200
>bullet guide

I do not own an x39 vepr but I'd assume once the bullet guide goes in the vepr mags are out. Heres a list of mags on the AWESOMELY HELPFUL vepr.org forums:
http://vepr.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=141

>Magpul
I would assume you'd need one of carolina shooters supply brackets...not sure which one. The .308 I used did a horrible thing: aluminum slotted front end and ar style adaptor on back into a magpul CTR. I'm happy with the result but even I stopped before putting the a2 style flash hider on the end...OH!

Add to the conversion list a crush washer and some sort of 14x1 LH flash hider. There are threads under that cap out front.
>>
>>30380200
No you actually have to cut the retainer go for that hand guard.
You have to modify your vepr mags but you still can use them .

How hard can it be to include a top hand guard cover? Even PSLs have top hand guard covers. Especially with all the thumb-over-bore retards you'd think this would be a must have feature. They're both utter shit and suffer from similar problems. The IO Incs just tend to fail a bit faster

He basically got two pieces of foam weatherstrip stuff with stick adhesive, stuck it on to both the left and right sides of the cheek weld part of the stock, then wrapped around it with athletic tape. I did find pic related on another thread of a guy making some ghetto rigged thing that resembles the riser on a VEPR 12

Not sure, never even seen this muzzle device before. I've not come across anything as obnoxious as the DTK-2 though. But I love it, the muzzle pushes down and the recoil impulse is more manageable and straight back. Literal night and day difference. I want to try it in the dark though and see what the flash looks like.

Whatacountry.

I don't know if the price was decent ($16 each) but I figured it would be best in case of panic since I was meaning to buy them anyways.

My favorite part of BHO mags is that the trigger stays active after removing them, which negates my rifle's sticky bolt and makes it way easier to charge.

He doesn't like tapco. It's fine, sort of the same concept as a 74 brake but cheaper and lighter, and comes in 7.62

Why do people pay $70 to $90 for Bulgarian (10) AK74 bayonets on Ebay when they aren't all that difficult to find surplus ones for like $40?

I've got three (10) 74 bayonets that I've bought over the years for less than $40 a piece. Should I sell all three on Ebay and use that money to buy a proper Russian AK74 bayonet?

Two had slight rust around the wire cutter lug thing (which is common because if paint is going to wear it's going to wear around the lug) and one was in pretty good shape with small dings in the plastic scabbard. Both had the typical scuff on the blade from the piece of metal in the scabbard that holds the blade in place and rubs against it when drawing and sheathing it.

If they heat treated it the thin steel would probably shatter and send shards of metal everywhere.

It's a thin piece, for sure. But it doesn't erode away immediately, and it works quite well.
