I know there's an endless debate between 9mm and .45 But

It's 10mm, literally just google the specs. Stop shitposting trying to start an argument about which is "better" by thinly disguising it as something else.

Its my understanding that 10mm was the standard in lots of police forces around the USA, but they developed .40 to replace 10mm because the officers were complaining about the recoil of the weapons and they were also getting secondary kills from the bullet traveling through the intended target and hitting something else.

At least, that's what I read somewhere about the history of pistol cartridges used throughout history. Correct me if I'm wrong anywhere in that.

.40 S&W is a shortened 10mm Auto case, developed indeed because people (read: whimpy-armed females) found the recoil of full-power 10mm Auto to be too much.

It's close. The real deal was that after the 1986 miami shootout the FBI decided to replace their revolvers with semiauto pistols, and they wanted the best in a wide range of criteria-including,for example, killing potential after penetrating a car door. In the end out of all the contestants the 10mm was the winner, beating the .45 and 9mm hands down, so was adopted.
Soon, however, the FBI realized they'd made a bit of a mistake, as the 10 is larger and more powerful than many agents (who aren't all 6-foot gorillas) could handle, so they had a special reduced load 10mm made. And then some bright mind at S&W realized that if you shorten the case, you can get the reduced load performance out of a round that can be fit into 9mm size handguns, and thus was the .40S&W born.

.45 can be switched to .460 rowland which beats 10mm by far.
10mm can be converted to .50GI which sucks to be honest.

Straight out of the box, 10mm is ahead. Tricked out, a .45 is better.

Not really, the FBI only used the 10mm for a short while, and most police forces stuck with revolvers until switching to wonder nines or .40sw guns

This is false.
It was never widely used by police and the issues with " smaller framed" officers were issues with the depth of the grip being too much for people with really small hands. The recoil is not different enough to matter.
