It makes no difference in the operation of the rifle, just cleaning. Even then there are superior plating/pvd solutions that don't stain like NiB does when left with carbon on them if you were going for the "its shiny" factor.

The ambi bolt catch and release on the right side so a right handed person can manipulate bolt controls with their index finger and leave their left hand free for admin tasks, to load, or run the bolt for a type 3 malfunction.
>>
>>30350943
o tru thanks

>>30350951
>Why do people want the LWRC lowers?
people i dont know, me personally because the ambi paddles. they're the only one on the market that's doing ambi right. other "ambi" lowers are drop-only. you can't lock the bolt back using the control surface. locking the bolt back is the more difficult of the 2 things (locking, dropping) in my opinion and requires a stupid hand dance to do if you're a right handed shooter (unless you use a lever).

the paddles are better than a lever because gross motor skill actuation. you can just slap them from either side of the rifle.

also i have 2 levers and i think it would be lolzy to attempt to put a lever on each paddle (probably wont work on the right side paddle but whatever)

serrations for the forward assist
>>30350996
i may have put on some grease on the wear spots on the BCG when i cleaned beforehand. but what youre seeing is mostly clp i think
>>
Tummy
>>
>>30350985
those "serrations" are for the forward assist to push against to shove the bolt home into battery because the charging handle on ar15's are not pull and push. in other words you can only pull the bolt back with the charging handle on an ar15. in order to provide mechanical forward force you have to use the foward assist or rely on the action spring... or push on the little divotted area on the side of the carrier ahead of the serrations (where the 2 gas ports are)

I clean mine when it stops functioning correctly, even with appropriate levels of lubrication (read: not bone dry)

Then I clean it like an absolute madman. Every surface polished clean, every bit of dust and grease obliterated. I then add new grease and oil to every place it needs to be and start over.

I'm currently at ~600 malfunction free.

bearings fail you know. they wear too.

the tube is stabilized by the barrel nut crenelations. the more birds you can kill with one stone the better when it comes to manufacturing engineering.

Just got back in the AR game after not having one for many years. Didn't feel like scouring the surplus stores for 200 miles around for a full set of GI surplus 30rd magazines, so I just bought the Magpul Gen2 magazines because that's what came with my new AR. But now I'm sitting here looking at the few Adventure Line 20rd magazines I still had laying about, and the Magpul plastic is starting to bug me because I don't really know anything about it.

Did I spend a bunch of money on shitty plastic magazines? Should I have looked harder for surplus?

I'd like to get something smallish, like an MP5 minus the fake can they tak onto them. I'd like to get something for CQC/HD. I'm thinking a carbine like the M4 might be more modifiable and versatile.

A non-nfa 14.5" pinned to 16" is only slightly longer than an M4 with a the standard A2 flash hider.

If you want to go shorter you are looking into paying the ATF $200 extra for the privledge to own a short barreled rifle, or build/buy an AR "pistol"

Personally I think a standard non-nfa rifle will suit you just fine. You can always Form 1 it and slap a shorter barrel on it later if you want.

As for what to buy, how much are you looking to spend on the rifle alone without optics?

Mountains?
>>
>>30352222

Solid logic. While I'm on the subject of Magpul, my AR didn't come with a rear sight, and this shit is new to me since I got out of the Army right when the M4 started to get issued. I was in one of the first line infantry units to get them, but ETSed before we got any cool reasons to take the detachable carry handle off.

So I bought the Magpul flip-up rear sight just to have some way to shoot it until I could figure out what I really wanted to do with it. My friend sent off for a $20 UTG fixed post rear sight, but I didn't because I was leery of cheap things that look exactly like expensive things because that feels to good to be true.

Do you think my friend is getting a piece of shit?

Also, does anybody know a good entry-level reflex sight? I'm not above spending a little money on one, but I'm hesitant because I literally have no idea what I'm doing anymore when it comes to this type of shit. I've never been a gear queer, but then they started selling ARs without fucking sights and there's just so much shit to look at out there.

Hmm interesting. So when it comes to fixed post sights you can obviously afford to go a little cheaper since there are no moving parts, but once again the time tested adage applies. Why cheap out on something that protects what is priceless?

As far as I can recall the cheapest acceptable reflex sights are going to be the Bushnell TRS-25 and the Primary Arms Advanced Micro Dot.

The new SPARC AR might be something to look into, but in my personal experience the SPARC II was inferior and more expensive than the Primary Arms Advanced Micro Dot.

My 300blk upper in this picture (lower rifle) is only ever used for plinking subsonics out of. It has UTG sights on it since I didn't feel that shelling out for the LMT sights they clone was worth it for just a range toy.

They haven't broken or drifted, but I wouldn't trust them for anything remotely serious. My 5.56 upper which usually lives on the SBR has much sterner stuff on it, as of course does the upper rifle in the picture.
>>
>>30352261
Thanks anon. I knew about the 200$ ATF fee, and yeah it sucks but I really like the look of SBRs. Since my house has some pretty tight spaces, I feel like the smaller the better off I would be. I'll have to put more consideration into regular ARs though. Need to do a lot more research.

As for price range, I'm still pretty far off from that, I'm only recent hasguns; I'm still trying to get the SO used to the idea of guns in the house, concealed carrying and all of that. I'll check in, in a few months when I have more cash, but I'll probably be looking to spend about 1500$.

I kinda wish I had just gone the SBR route. Between the Shockwave brace, the correct steel buffer tube, and the CAA SST1 cheek saddle, I easily spent $140. For about $150 more I could have had a legit SBR, but I would have needed to wait on the ATF.

Thanks, it is an aesthetic that is sadly lost in the modern "make it lighter and thinner" mindset.

Not to say that I don't subscribe to that as well for rifles I actually sling up and carry like this upper >>30351377 I just figure that the toys and prone/bench rifles can afford to be heavier.

My buddies and I have a Sig brace and pistol tube we pass around whenever someone is Form 1ing a lower. I think its lived on 6 or 7 different pistols now.

I think when they came out they were around that price as well. Just tell your boys they need to get in on the SBR game.
>>
>>30352497
SWFA fixed 10x is still the budget long range glass king, and the PA 4-14 FFP isn't terrible at a cheaper price.
>>
Kind of want an AR, but here in Syrupland we need to get the magazine pinned at 5 rounds and we can only shoot it at a range.

Worth bothering with if i get my restricted license?
>>
>>30352569
Sounds horrible having to reload every 5 shots
>>
>>30352569
Fellow Syrupbro here, do it nigger.
ARs are so much better than the other non-restricted rifles we are forced to fuck with.
Figure out what kind of gun you want to build, and start collecting parts.
>>
>>30352568
Eh, I need variable 2bhfam
>>
>>30352569
Yeah, the AR is still the preferred choice of competition shooters. One major downside to owning an AR-15 in Canada is the up-selling of American parts by vendors due to import fees and them being dicks. I've seen a BCM KMR go for $300 here, which is ridiculous even after taking the exchange rate into account. You have to shop smart.
>>
>>30352596
You can find 10 round "pistol" magazines that fit in ARs, or 15 round Beowulf magazines.
Honestly I don't really give a fuck about the mag limits, their only pinned with a cheap rivet so you could rip them out easily if you ever needed to. You get pretty good at reloading then too :^)
I'm more upset that we can't own suppressors up here.
>>
>>30352569
I'd sooner get a Tavor or Vz58 as both are unrestricted.

Range only shooting would make the AR simply not worth the trouble.

>>
>>30352596
Yeah, thats my thoughts. As much as I want one it doesnt seem like it would be much fun. Plus its restricted so I could only use it on a range.

I would probably get the same experience if I just tacticool up an SKS or something, at least that I can shoot out in the woods or kill coyotes or something.

For $350 you can get the PA 1-6x and an okay mount. That is what I'm planning on putting on my 16"

>>30352512
That little gun has certainly seen some good use. It looks like a fun rifle and I like that Larue mount. I would like the KAC covers on my 10.5" but I'm simply not gucci enough.

>>30352551
Haha that is the other thing. If I SBR it now I'll should sell the Shockwave and CAA SST1 setup. Most of my firearms friends are too normie for it.

I also can't really justify SBRing it because the lower is just a PSA and the upper is a $200 non chromed Hardened Arms, poormans stuff.
>>
>>30352616
The Tavor costs almost $3000 retail right now. I don't see how any sane person could recommend paying $3000 for something that costs $1600 in the US. It's a fucking scam. The vz58 is also horribly overpriced.

Not that anon, but I do have an anecdote for you.

Gun buddy had one get locked up on his rifle in the collapsed position. He wasn't the hugest fan of the stock to start, but considering his solution was not figuring out the problem but rather just taking a zip disc in his angle grinder to it told me he was even less impressed with it than I thought. Work on ARs or build an AR?

Are you going to build the entire thing from scratch or will you buy a complete upper?
>>
What optic should I select for an SPR?
I was thinking something between 2-7 and 3-12.
I would like something that is SFP with a ranging reticle, no target turrets, possibly side-adjusting for paralax, 30mm tube, and maybe lighted.
Only thing that is close I have found so far is the Vortex Diamondback HP 2-8 or 3-12, and the Leupold 2.5-8.
>>
>>30353083
>>30353083
Neither. I was given an AR last year as a present, and I find it very uncomfortable to shoot.

The hand guard in particular is uncomfortable to hold. Not to mention, the grip has no ergonomics to it. Basically, the core rifle is fine, it's all the finishing touches that need revision.
