The AR and AK both are seriously inseparable from their respective calibers, which is why AR15 is only usually spoken of in regard to 5.56/.223 rather than any of the 28234032493824389 calibers it's able to be chambered in.

When people make this comparison, they're comparing not only the weapon but also the round as both, in addition to being inseparable from it, also are typically considered the pinnacle of their caliber.
