** Ammo thread **

Enough with the children and gamer chatter and which plastic or metal shit to attach to a rifle. If you shoot the .223 Rem/5.56mm NATO round, let's talk about which rounds are ideal for various scenarios.

What do various LE agencies carry?
What do different branches of service or specialized units carry?

Let's talk ballistics and even - rare for this site - talk something scientific and not at all advertising influenced.

... and no references to cheap crap like Coyote or related steel-cased plinker noisemakers.

Boy. You got anything to contribute to this thread or are you just going to sit there with a turd in your drawers?

338 lapua for all purposes, no exceptions.

You conceal carry a 10mm too, don't you sugartits.
>>
>>30329698

There's not much to write. 55 grain FMJ or HP is by far the most commonly used round, followed distantly by the 62 grain ss109/M855.

Available in Bulk and cheap = loved by LE, Mil and Civ alike

Some 1:7 rifles seem to like 62+ grain better, 77 grain match exists, but unless you know what you're doing and have a rifle dialed in, you won't see any difference. Even with the shittiest available ammo you can get <1.5 MOA out of a chrome lined AR, which is better than most people can shoot.

>>30329844

Can you suggest brands and specific models?

I like Black Hiills, never shot TAP, some swear by Speer. Not sure if it's published what NYPD/LAPD put in their carbines.. what rounds ATF/DEA/FBI/CIA/SAD/DEVGRU, Pinkerton Security carry but was just wondering what type actuall bullet, grain, and specific types if that is out there.
>>
>>30329698
My agency runs 75gr TAP.
>>

For patrolman out of 6920s with 1:7 or different?
>>
>>30329984
A mix of 6920's, 16" rock rivers, and 10.5" rock rivers. Dunno the twist rate on the rock rivers. Mines a 6920.

US mil uses m855a1 now.

There are some differences

Open tip/polymer tipped 75 and 77 grn 5.56 is where its at if you're looking to drop snackbars with ease. 55 grn can get it done too, but 75 and 77 grn make some nasty wounds

LAPD buys .223 ammo off the Winchester bid contract they have, IIRC nothing special, just power-point or standard JSP Ranger Law Enforcement loads. Not so great when shooting someone through automobile glass.

FBI used Federal 556FBIT3, which is a 5.56 loading of Federal's Trophy Bonded Bear Claw deer bullet. Accuracy of a lot of the factory seconds sold on the market is fairly shit compared to match rounds but they expand to 45 cal and kill shit dead after penetrating windshields, plywood, etc. You can find the police department equivalent floating around as XM556SBCT3

They also switched to Winchester Ranger RA556B Bonded Solid Base. Same effects as the Federal load, just a different brand.

Both rounds are waterproof with crimped primers to prevent popped primers from falling into an AR15 lower and fucking up the trigger group.

You have to decide what side you fall on in the "expanding versus fragmenting" schools of thought for 5.56

Heavy match bullets fragment good, especially Hornady TAP T2, but you give up a lot of ability to shoot someone inside a car if that's important to you.

Bonded or monometal bullets like the Federal Trophy Bonded, Federal Fusion MSR, Speer Gold Dot, Winchester Bonded Solid Base, Winchester Razorback XT, and Barnes/Black Hills/Remington Hog Hammer TSX give up the tissue damage you see with fragmentation, but expand to a respectable .45+ cal and do better when facing challenging barriers like car windshields or plywood.

Mainly in that it's way over pressured. Mk318 is superior in every way, but adopting it might have stopped some Army brass from getting a promotion.

I heard the Army was fielding the m855a1 and the Marines were using mk318. Not sure to what extent each branch has it available for their troops and not sure which is more effective.

Can someone give the differences with some real world experience? My google-fu is weak on phone.

Anyone try those explosive tipped 5.56

Appently the FBI issues a 62 gr bonded soft point rounds as their 556 cartridge. Is this stuff any good?
>>
>>30330649
As far as technicalities go the m855a1 is a lead free round. It is comprised of a steel tip penetrator and a copper slug which detach from each other upon impact. The mk318 is an open tip soft lead round which deforms greatly on impact. From what each branch says, both apparently provide decent barrier performance (as far as 556 can do) and great damage on soft tissue. But that's all I've read. It would nice to get word from actual servicemen who used it in combat.
>>
>>30330661
Yes, behind the Heavy OTMs, the bonded LE loads from Federal and Winchester are rated very high in terminal performance.

Search around for Dr. Gary Roberts testing (DocGKR on a number of forums).
>>
>>30330661
Yes. Currently one of, if not the, best 5.56 loads currently available. See >>30330601

>>30330700
Totally wrong. The Mk318 is not a soft point. It's an open tip match round. It does not "deform greatly on impact." It performs very well in soft tissue and through barriers. Mod1 is lead free and there is a design for bounded version in lead free and regular. DocGKR says it's the best general purpose 5.56 military round available.

The M855a1 is a three part design, stolen from Liberty Ammunition. It performs terminally better than M855, but has the same accuracy standard, doesn't match M855 ballistic reticles as promised, and batters guns due to being over pressure. It was adopted because it's lead free. It costs more than Mk318 and performs worse in soft tissue and no better against barriers.

Input from troops won't help. Mk318 has seen more combat but they're both new rounds. You won't find anybody who's really used both and both are better than M855. Most everything youtr gonna find is antecedent info pushed by the Army or Marines to try and lobby for their own round.

Sorry I meant to say the mk318 is a lead core open tip match. Did not mean to make sound like a soft point.
>>
>>30331084
The strength of MK318 is the solid base for intermediate barrier penetration, its performance on unobstructed unarmored targets is really not in the same league as the thin jacket full lead core OTMs like the 77gr sierras in MK262 .
