Has there been an instance of a modern fighter jet using its gun in combat?
>>
>>30293478
depends on what you consider modern

If I recall the Israelis have put an emphasis on gun kills when viable.
>>
>>30293566
Not OP but whenever someone mentions the first modern planes i always think of the f-14
>>
All the time.
>>
>>30293478

A-10s, F-16s, and F-15Es have done gun runs.

i'm pretty sure the last US air to air gun kill was in like 1969.
>>
>>30293767

Wasn't there an A-10 that BRRRT'ed a helo in the first gulf war? Not a plane, but still technically A2A.

This implies either show of force or gun run, not sure which

Found it

>Swain said his AIM-9 heat-seeking missile would not lock onto the small target racing 50 feet above the desert floor. So he switched to the seven-barrel, 30-millimeter cannon mounted in the nose of his plane.

>"I started firing about a mile away," Swain said. "Some of the bullets ran through him, but we weren't sure if it was stopped completely. So I came back with the final pass, hit it and it fell apart.

>"On the final pass, I shot about 300 bullets at him. That's a pretty good burst. On the first pass, maybe 75 rounds. The second pass, I put enough bullets down, it looked like I hit with a bomb.

>"We tried to ID the helicopter after we were done and it was just in a bunch of little pieces, so we can't tell what type it was."

At this point, why not save the space and the weight by removing the gun? I know i'm going to get backlash by saying this but, seeing the poor guys cranking the bullets out of the plane on the carriers after every sortie because they never use them seems pretty obvious we don't need them anymore.
>>
>>30294152
They tried that in nam. And found out that extended engagements led to some pretty up close and slow dogfights, where it's good to have a gun
>>
>>30294152
They tried that and then never did it again
>>
>>30294152
because people smarter than you thought about and implemented this and it turned out to be a shit idea in execution

they tried it with the f-4 in vietnam because muh missiles and f-4s would end up getting fucked by korean war-era jets because they didn't have shit once the magic aim-9 or 7 fucking went off the rail and did a literal 90 degree turn from the intended target

I hate to tell y'all, but the Navy never did put an internal gun in their F-4s, or their F-35s.

The Navy's solution was better tactics and training. "Surprisingly", the missiles started "working better" shortly thereafter.

I hate to tell y'troll, but there are a metric fuckton of confirmed cases where a gun wouldve made the kill and shortened the engagement providing a bigger margin of safety for the pilots

The navy's solution was "huheuheu he is within 200ft missile wont arm lets keep on dogfighting for 10 more minutes so we can get a shot off".
"Surprisingly", the first aces of the vietnom war had killed their 5th mig in such an engagement and wished they "had guns" shortly thereafter.

With the new Hydra 70mm missiles BAE is making, it might make sense to go without a gun.
>>
>>30294152
You always need a backup weapon. And you can't strafe a column of soldiers or vehicles with a missile.
>>
>>30293478
Happened in the Falklands.
>>
>>30294479
Are you retarded? Take a look at what you quoted, and take a look at what you posted
>>
>>30294600
If theres a "column" of vehicles for you to strafe then chances are they've got air cover if they're even halfway competent.

Which makes a gun run essentially suicide.

how long before laser become small enough to fit on board planes?

F4 phantoms would take migs out in vietnam with guns in dogfights...

U.S. Air Force F-4F has an M61 under the nose. By the time a gun equipped Pantom was available, the Navy was transitioning to the F-14 as a fleet defense fighter. The F-4S, the final Navy/Marine variant, was relegated to being a bomb truck and guns were deemed unnecessary.

It should be noted the gun came back off for the final Air Force version, the F-4G Wild Weasel. The under nose gun pod was replaced with an APR 40 radar homing and warning receiver.

F-35, F-18, Gripen are all not modern?

Modern air combat is something unkown to most know because the last air war was twenty years ago
>>
>>30295203

You realize that retarded standard would make the F-104 a "modern fighter" but the F-18E/F "not modern" right?
>>
>>30294465
id had considerably more to do with logistic personnel leaving high tech equipment out on a thai runway. Than the actual missiles being shit

Bekaa Valley, 1982, though that was less combat and more the IAF curbstomping the Syrians with F-15s.
