Trail runner here, I don't know much about guns, but I need something light I can carry with me when I run through the backwoods and bear territory. What can stop a bear that is light and easy to carry? I'm thinking a 158 grain .357 mag Remington or something, but not sure. Like I said, I don't know guns. Help a nigga out. Pic for attention, it's an RIP bullet this guy was showing me.

>stops bears
choose one and only one. If you are worried about bears 10mm or .460 are your min calibers.

Depends on the gun and the ammunition. I wouldn't trust 158 grain .357 against a big grizzly running at me, but a black bear, definitely. But then, I would trust most hollow point 9mm against most black bears. There are .357 loads that I would trust against angry, large grizzlies, but I would have to shoot them out of lighter guns before I trusted that.

Park Ranger in Alaska told me how to ID bear poop.

Black Bear poop has nuts and seeds in it.
Grizzly Bear poop has a can of Bear Mace in it
>>
a fucking .22 will scare off most bears. You don't have to kill the damn thing

Let's all base our lives on what happens "most" of the time

What kind of bear?
>>
>>30291159
not OP but was planning to get bear mace in case of a black bear attack while walking on my street. Is it a waste of money?
>>
>>30291444
>I either dont know what bears are or I have never seen a wild animal get aggressive
Let me put it this way, I domt have bear in my area, but I have been attacked by white tale dear (protip- dont wrestle it, puch them in the face, fight them like a boxer and after a few hits they will run. If you try to grab them they will fuck you up with those hooves)
>>
>>30290937
Unless you piss off a bear they don't give a shit about you.

Bear mace is statistically more effective than a handgun and considerably easier to use. Don't listen to what amounts to Fudd tier logic. >>30291224

That being said, I like to carry a gun when hiking for the two legged threats. For that any 380 pocket gun will work fine if you need something light. If you feel the need to carry a larger gun for bear a .44 is considered the minimum. Lot's consider it not enough.
>>
>>30291224
Seriously what is this cover art called? It always looks amazing
>>
>>30291568
>Bear mace and making noise to let the bear know you are around so you don't scare it is statistically more effective.
>>
In school they taught me that you should slice it's snout off with a knife since they don't like that
>>
>>30291568
I'm in NJ so bear mace is my only option, and my gerber I carry for legal reasons not including self defense. I'm also not allowed to own guns thanks to the ATF
>>
>>30290937
I wouldn't use a hollow point, I'd use some sort of super hot FMJ or roundnosed bullet like Buffalo Bore or the like. You really want maximum penetration
>>
.44 mag at the very least if you go handgun. Which I wouldn't if bears are a serious concern.

If it were me I'd have either a 12 gauge (slugs), big bore lever gun, or .308 or larger rifle.

Remember kids, you don't need something that will kill a bear in a couple minutes. You need something that will drop a charging bear on the fucking spot.
>>
>>30291624
.22lr and shot placement then
>>
>>30291645
You're funny.

.22lr won't even punch through a bear's hide let alone skull. You would have to shoot up the bear's nose.

Try it out and let us know how it goes Mr. Shot Placement
>>
>>30291684
:^)
>>
Yeah you can't out DPS a bear, you need to CC it then cast Rapid Maneuvers and LOS it while it is stunned

Then make sure all your buffs are up and kite it back to your base

Appreciate the answers, bears scare the shit out of me.

I don't think any living thing likes that, anon. Solid tactic. Bear unrelated
>>
Smith and wesson makes a 329pd and it's probably the lightest .44 Mag out there. With that said, I'd rather carry bear mace as its proven effective. I will also add that if you're worried about black bear don't. So unless you're in grizz territory don't sweat bears too much. I'd be more worried about two legged critters over bear. And both can be stopped by any of the major calibers.
>>
>>30292363
This. The Super Redhawk Alaskan is literally designed for exactly what you're talking about using it for.

im kind of split on whether those rounds would be good against bears compared to a more conventional heavy cast lead round. they've been shown to penetrate hard materials like kevlar and bullet-proof glass before but they are mostly dependent on their velocity, unique shape and hard copper casting to penetrate through fleshy humans and car doors. against something like a bear with layers of fur, muscle and hard bone a 200+ grain hard cast buffalo bore 10mm round that relies purely on energy transfer might be a better option.

Bear mace, that's about it.

Any type of gun is going to weigh minimum 2 pounds and be annoying to run with.

It could just be me, but you should probably consider not running through bear country.

If I'm going through bear country I'm bringing a rifle.
>>
>>30291743
This guy knows what's up.
The bear is a hybrid tank you can't just win by going melee or trying to out dps him.

You will need to cc him and then nuke from range while kitting it.

Yeah like most guns aren't used in crime so let's ban them all because of the small minority that do.
