So this is my first time posting on /k/ and I need some help because i want to go shopping based on recent events.

Im looking for a .223 semi auto rifle. Im eyeballing a bushmaster xm-15 or something similar only because its a "classic" design. My problem is that I see various models from various brands that look similar but i dont know what im looking at to differentiate between the specs.

Looking to use this up to 250 yards or so.
>>
>>30290223
I wouldn't fuck with a Bushmaster with your dick.

Build a PSA or maybe rock river instead for a cheaper prebuilt.

>Getting a 223 with post 223

Checked.
>>
>>30290223
Everyone's focused on Orlando threads and gun grabbers. What's your budget?
>>
>>30290334
I dont mind building, would probably teach me some stuff. Though if it requires drills or presses then ill opt out, mostly because id have to buy that stuff as well.

Though i get the impression researching build kits will take me farther down a rabbit hole of confusing specs.
>>
>>30290395
Not him, but I'm in the same boat. I need an AR-15 salt rifle, don't want to build, and my budget is unlimited.
>>
>>30290395
$1000, but ill stretch to 1500 for just cause. My limit is 2000 with accessories; scope, strap, mags.
>>
>>30290425
Well the sky is the limit then.
>>30290434
I'm less knowledgeable but trying to give you bumps. I bought a Sig M400 for $1000 bucks in 2011. It's pretty great but it now MSRP's for 1200-1300.

Of course if you built and did some homework, you could spend that 1500 and really trick that thing out with accessories.
>>
>>30290477
>Well the sky is the limit then
That's a pretty cool name. Which brand is that?
>>
>>30290509
At that price range nobody agrees. You saw what I bought on my budget.

I hear Daniel Defense is a good higher tier AR.
>>
>>30290477
>Sig M400
I can get behind the swat model, which just so happens to hit the $1000 price point based on a website i found.
>>
>>30290633
Looks like a different pistol grip and they put railing handguard. Handguard is easy to swap out, but I'd go for the picatinny if it's an option. Probably magpul brand.

It also has a mag release on both left and right sides. Good for lefties.

I built mine for right at $1000 in parts, the only tool I had to buy was the castle nut wrench for the buffer tube since the Aero upper came with its own pile of shit pot metal barrel nut wrench.

I bought everything around black Friday and Christmas sales though, so I saved about $400 on everything.

Any good?
>>
>>30291177
I can work with that, did you buy a complete upper and lower?
>>
Colt LE something
>>
>>30291284
I bought all the parts and minor assemblies separately:
CMMG lower
CMMG lower parts kit
Geissele G2S trigger
Aero M4E1 upper
Aero 12" handguard
Larue Predaturd barrel
Larue gas block and tube
Daniel Defense chrome BCG
BCM VLTOR charging handle
>>
If you want something "classic" but still want something functional and modern I say buy a 20" govt upper from BCM, a removable carry handle upper, and a PSA lower with rifle stock, and some A2 handguards.

If you wanna tacticool it out later you can by free floating the barrel, putting an optic on, etc.

Also it's pretty cheap and good quality.
>>

I've heard bad things, some people swear by them. So I'm guessing it was a quality control issue.

Also Bushmaster used to be really cheap, but at their current prices better can be had. I'm not saying they're horrible or even bad, but definitely not my choice.

Not OP here. I, too, want to build an AR from scratch. I'm going to order the lower from 80% Lowers and a complete AR-Stoner Carbine Kit from Midwayusa. I just spent the last hour looking for uppers and kits in stock.

I'm not too worried about assembly. Should I pull the trigger on those parts? This would be my first build and I don't want to splurge, yet.

Pic unrelated.

Or, if you just want a complete rifle, take a look at the Windham Weaponry government rifle. It's a M16A4 clone. Windham also sells more conventional carbines.

keep in mind the "stoner" kit has nothing to do with eugene stoner, thats just a gimmicky name they picked up. theyre a generic entry level brand. this is fine so long as you know what youre getting into

>>30291675
How are they compared to BCM? Or a Colt AR-15A4 or FN-15 Rifle?

Isn't colt supposed to be coming out with XM16E1 replicas?
>>
>>30291753
BCM is the best for the money.
>>
>>30291753
Not him but Windham is pretty good, apparently what the old school Bushmaster crew changed their name to after getting bought out.

A complete BCM or Colt would probably hold their value better if you planned on selling it in the future and would be a """""better""""" rifle but that is maybe 5% CQ/warranty/fit and finish pickiness and 95% logo tax. The Windham will make bullets go out the front end just as well.
>>
>>30291846
Fuck forgot to mention, Windham specifically says not to shoot steel case. It won't actually damage the gun but it will void your warranty. Honestly this would be the only reason I would avoid them.

Can confirm, my DDM4V1 is great. I got it for $1,100 on gun broker a couple years ago.
>>
>>30291753
>>30291846

It's >>30291675 here. I recently bought the WW government rifle, and it's plenty good. It has a nice fit and finish. BCM would probably come with a nicer bolt carrier group and be slightly better, but it's also going to cost you.

I've handled the FN-15 and it didn't seem any better than my WW rifle. The FN-15's barrel is slightly longer than is usual on a 20" M16A4 clone.

Colt is indeed coming out with XM16E1 replicas, but I don't think that they will be making many and they'll have a high cost. It'll make a neat collectible if that's what you're interested in.

OP here, I can get behind this if i stretch my budget. http://www.gunbroker.com/item/565229165

buy a 100% lower and start from there. no press required. anderson lowers are cheap and a lower is a lower as long as it is within spec.

going to use irons until I get proficient with it. Then idk maybe an RMR or Aimpoint, trying to spend -$600 if I can. Or I might just keep saving for a Acog and just be done with it.
>>
I just bought an le6920 for 875 (new, supposedly in stock--good, right?). First gun purchase, I already feel weird about it. I used to buy expensive, useless shit like this as a kid and always regretted it. Will I regret this?
>>
>>30291106

I bought my AR like 6 years ago and settled on the DD M4V7. At the time I figured it was the best thing on the market in the $1200-1500 range, besides maybe the Noveske NSR rifles but you couldn't find them anywhere.

It's been literally the perfect AR, but if I was buying now the LWRC DI is what I would get, besides maybe an LMT.
>>
>>30292596
Not if you enjoy shooting it.
>>
>>30292658
last time I shot a gun was my .22 like 8 years ago, I enjoyed that but it's been a while.
>>
>>30292596
Depends. Was this expensive to you? I'm not being a dick, I'm saying if you can recover from it then I wouldn't stress. Plus you may enjoy shooting if this is your first gun, also good choice.
>>
>>30292674
Just try and make a hobby out of it. I don't shoot as much as I should but I still don't regret getting mine. Just try and go shoot it at least once a month.
>>
>>30292656
I got my stepdad the M4v3 and I'm keeping the M4v1LW. Did I dun goof? I liked the carbine over the mid desu and it's aesthetic was more my liking on the V1LW.
>>
>>30292691
pretty expensive. I had 2k saved from my min wage job. Just graduated HS with 60 college credits, so it's kinda a grad gift to myself.
>>
>>30292693
that sounds like pretty good advice actually. Never been to a range though, and live in the city now. I'm a socially awkward fuck and would probably embarrass myself.

>Just graduated HS with 60 college credits
Good for you, anon. Well then enjoy your gift, and it's not shit so if in a bad pinch you could sell the thing. Not that I'm into that, i've worked two jobs and gone to school so I know what it's like but try and hang onto it.
>>
>>30290223
What state are you from? I'd suggest looking into how to build one yourself so you can have what you want on your AR.

I also suggest you ask the boys over in /arg/, they're a bit weird but they're willing to help out.

>>30292738
Thanks, I feel better about purchasing it already

From the photos I've seen, pretty horrific and fun at the same time. The few Florida meet ups looked kinda cool desu but I just didn't have time to go between work and school. Then again not sure how I feel being around a bunch of random /k/ommandos and guns in the woods.
>>
>>30290334
223 checked and kind of amazing actually.
But screw 223 unless you have supply issues in your area.
5.56 has higher standards and is less corrosive than .223

God that sounds frightening.

>>
>>30290425
Go buy a Daniel Defense rifle is your budget is unlimited.

Hell, go buy a few rifles because you can. Go buy an AKM too so you'll have that as well. Because it shouldn't be AR vs. AK fags when you can be both.
>>
>>30290401
Just buy a completely milled lower and then assemble it yourself. It can be frustrating at times, but a home build is a great way to learn about your rifle.

No. They could very well guess you're lying. Proving it however...
>>
>>30290223

>>30291424
Yes. If you don't need a short barrel, I'd suggest going with a basically A2/A4 20" barrel with the rifle-length gas system, and just the standard flash-hider. (Muzzle brakes make the AR horribly loud. My Finnish nugget seems like a .22 with a braked AR next to me.
>>
>>30293901
This. My ears never stop ringing anymore.
>>
>>30290401
only a stripped upper needs specialised tools.

nothing on the AR requires presses or drills unless you're building from an 80% lower.

watch a fucking YouTube video on assembly. it's not hard. hell, maintenance on some guns is harder than building an AR from parts.
>>
>>30291212
they're the lowest tier shitty lower that won't literally rattle apart and is still milspec enough to work with most decent uppers.
>>
>>30291504
Then you are an idiot.
>>
>>30291464
Everything about how he phrased this seems awkward. I mean why would anyone specify a specific range they want unless it was long range?

It is .223 rifle, pretty much anything out there is effective to 250 yards. Also seems like OP is picking up this habit in the spur of the moment and isn't too familiar with firearms in the first place.
