Honestly reading about Nazi helicopters and how they were basically only used for transport has me wondering why nobody really considered the potential of choppers as combat vehicles until the Vietnam era.

Does anybody know why this was? Was it because the helicopters of the day were too unreliable or flimsy to realistically survive any engagement?

Helicopter were used as CASEVAC in Korea. They played with putting guns on them as well as using them as troop transports. People *saw* the potential, but the engineering had to catch up and give us sturdier and more powerful helicopters.

way too fragile - to be able to lift off using piston engines you can't have armor, and even losing bits of the aircraft's lightweight aerodynamic skin or the tail section would render the helicopters unbalanced to a degree that would cause them to crash. Which obviously means putting guns on them wouldn't end well for the helicopter either

Factor in also that they have no range and burn through fuel at a ridiculous rate means you can't deploy them very far from air bases and the germans had a nightmare of a time properly keeping all their aircraft and tanks fueled throughout the war as it was.

So lacking the exceptional capabilities of any of the main crazy-pants wunderweapons, but with all the same logistical problems of the worst of the wunderweapons, it's not super surprising they kinda just end up unused as the war continued.

Payload limitations and limited range was a huge limiting factor. As >>30272070
mentioned, the tech just wasn't there yet. An Fl 282 had a max 340kg payload from its dry weight and a 170km range.

In comparison an Iroquois of Vietnam era had a 1944kg maximum payload from dry and a 507km range.

note that the innovation the Sioux brought that made them useable as CASEVAC vehicles was that they used just 2 rotors and a single engine, and in other ways had a design focused on lightness rather than lifting power - this meant they had enough range and speed to operate in a warzone despite their fragility, the fuel system and feed could be simplified to allow the pilot to focus more on flying.

Like with many military firsts, the axiom "keep it simple, stupid" turns out to be one that pays dividends. And too this day mainstay helicopters are single engined.

And to answer OP, Germans have the highest IQ's in Europe. Before WW2, Germany had the greatest scientists in the world, with more nobel prizes than any other country. They were a massive modern industrial powerhouse whose scientific establishment was second to none.

In comparison to the tight efficiency of the German soldiers, the Americans were like the ghetto team task force. Without going too far into specifics, just compare the American uniforms to the German uniforms, it's night and day. German efficiency is absolutely unmatched in this world, it could be argued that the only reason America was an industrial behemoth was because most of it's population was composed of German immigrants.

After WW2 Russia and America descended upon Germany to plunder it's scientists to use in either side's space programs (which is why they got shit done). The loss of German life during WW2 was a tremendous hammer blow to all of humanity. Likely stifling human progress forever

doesn't take much brainpower to deduce using ones airforce to bomb civilians instead of military industrial targets and radar installations is a more efficient use of ones offensive aerial assets. Especially since this tried and failed once before in WW1.
