Na man its easy as fuck, joined a SSAA club, sat a tafe course (same course for cat A and B for me) and had my cat H licence. Had to wait i think 6 months to get a pistol but after that easy sailing. Only thing is you have to get something like 6 shoots a year? so unless you are busy asf/poor you will be fine. The dream is a semi auto shotgun/Semi auto rifle. One can hope.

Depends on state exactly but if you have an AB license already you can skip some of the BS.

SSAA is mostly a shit club for pistols though, you will probably want to join a dedicated pistol club, they will generally have way better facilities though member ship fees are around the $300-$400 per year mark.

It varies per state like everything.

But most its 6 per year if you have any guns on your license.

There are then 4 categories for Cat H attendance purposes

A-Air pistols
B-Centerfire less then .38
C-Centerfire over .38
D-Rimfire

If you own pistols in just one of these classes then you have to do 6 shoots.

If you own multiple classes worth of pistols then its 4 per class.

So if you have 4 9mms and a couple of .357 Mag revolvers. You would have to do 6 shoots per year.

If you own an airpistol, a 22lr, a 9mm and a .44 Mag then you have to do 16 shoots.

How hard is it to get a licence in Western Australia?

I always want to try but I always get stuck with the "Genuine Reason to own a firearm" question.

WA is slightly more fuckedup than the other states.
A. Join a rifle club. There are about 4-5 around Perth including one at the Range at Swanbourne.
B. Get a farmer to write you a permission to hunt on his prperty letter.
If you dont know any farmers ask at your LGS, some have farmer contacts who will write a letter for a few extra bucks.
The rest is standard Strayan gun laws. Do a safety test, pay fees, wait 28days while they ignore your paperwork, etc.
Simplest just go into one of the LGS and ask them.

Westralian haveguns here. This is pretty much correct
Most clubs are very relaxed and chill, until gun laws apply and then they get cautious for obvious reasons. So pick a close one, go down, chat with any of the clubs senior people, and you should have a good time learning. They want more shooters, so I've found they'll act like you're their best mate.
You can expect to pay dosh for- applying to be a member, getting a police check, actual membership fees when you're confirmed, and then a licence fee when you apply for a gun after 6 months
During that 6 months, going off what my club does (CFPC, PA/ISSF pistols only) you'll have to complete a basic competency test, do a number of shoots (that is, scored shooting matches) in air or .22, then do a supervised match with larger calibre firearms.
After the 6 months, then it's the standard slog to buy a gun- club letter, firearm certificate from dealer, firearms awareness test, safe installed and pictures sent with 'yes I installed a safe' form. Send it to WAPOL with the fee mentioned earlier, wait 28 days, let them know you still want to get a gun, and then you'll get your licence.
That's first time. I'm getting pistol #2 soon, the process is a lot faster since its just the club letter, firearm cert and no waiting period.

That's all for Cat H specifically, but I assume longarms for sport shooting is the same

A club organised shooting competition or higher (state titles etc).

Basically you rock up on a say Monday night when your club has a rostered IPSC comp. You talk some shit set up a stage shoot it, take the scores, patch the targets, throw away your score or keep it doesn't matter, comp completed, get a book recording the day and comp signed by an RO (who can be you if no one else shows or you are an RO).

At the end of the year you have to submit your recorded shoots to your club and sign a deceleration you have met the requirements. Back when the laws got stricter back in 2003 the various weapons licensing bodies all originally wanted every shooter to have to send them their record of mandatory shoots and the clubs to send them their range sign on books, but that was way to much work for them, OCR doesn't work with crappy rushed handwriting and the date entry work was just too much.
