Why does the military pay so fucking much for shit?

There's no way this shit actually costs how much they pay to make them. Like M4 carbines being $1400 each when building an AR with completely milspec parts is like $600-$700.

Or like these new TCAPS smart ear plug systems they're deploying being $2000 each.

I have no idea how much a normal smart ear plug system costs, but there's no way it could be anything close to $2k.

i know it's not /pol/ but it's the leaders: they don't know what the hell they're doing
>>
They dont only buy the device.
they also buy full 24/7 support and shit for the lifespan of the contract
>>
>>30196524
m4's are like 700 bucko
>>
>>30196584
Yup, this is the reason that the F-35 seems so expensive to people. They don't realize we'd pay even more than that trying to keep our aging fleet of aircraft flying, since it's more expensive to fix old birds.

>>30196524
>Like M4 carbines being $1400 each when building an AR with completely milspec parts is like $600-$700.
>what is the wage of the guys who put them together
>what is the wage of the guy who inspects them all to milspec standards
>what is the guy who packs them up
>what is the cost to ship them
>what is all the other random bullshit the military demands you do that require more man hours than normal thus raising the cost
You don't know jack shit and you're an idiot for making this thread. Also this >>30196584

More than likely they do know what they're doing, which is of course worse.

The four hundred dollar screw driver story always makes me laugh.
As an aircraft maintainer, I know the truth.

The screwdriver was for the SR71.
It was a precision instrument, sized exactly for a fastener, no slop allowed.
It was made from titanium, using steel on a titainum fastener causes corrosion.
It was insulated, ststic electricity picked up by the airframe in flight may not be grounded on landing.
It was serial tracked, stockake an aviation workshop, you will find every nut, bolt and spanner accounted for but they may be missing a truck or two. Tool control is a double check process in aviation, you don't want to take off with a spanner bouncing atriums in the avionics bay.

If you can find a screwdriver with those peoperties for under three hundred dollars, get a job at the pentagon and save them some money.

The contractors can charge whatever because the gov doesn't give a flying fuck for its taxpayers and will spend mountains of shekels on big players in washington.

They also seem to think the lifespan PROGRAM cost is the cost of individual aircraft.

That 2k smart ear plug has be able to operate -40 - +60 degrees c in torrential rain and sand storms up to 50'000ft 24/7 or what ever other ridiculous criteria the military comes up with. It also has to met opsec requirements and the company needs to provide 24/7 support and be able to come up solutions to any problem that may be encountered. You also need to factor in insurance for if something goes wrong and the company gets taken to court or taken in-front of a senate committee.
>>
>>30197154
How is it outdated? People over here do hate it, the news implies at all times that it's an unreliable weapon, people in the bundeswehr disagree, so does h&k.
>>
>>30197022
>Mfw america Not into g36-k's ..

Considering it offers zero advantages over the M4 I don't see why they would.

You don't understand how military procurement works, do you?

I'm the minister of defense of Freedom Country. My generals ask me for a new piece of equipment. Required quantity is about 300'000 units not counting the spare parts. Market price for such a type of equipment is about $1'500 on the civilian market. So, I ask my golf buddies from the defense industry, to make me some offers.

The first one invites me to Singapore, we dine in a 5-star hotel with $6000/night Russian escorts, drink Dom Perignon and eat caviar. The next day he sends me his offer. Price $5000 a piece. It's expensive but it comes in OD green case instead of civilian black or gray. Should I give him the contract I will receive a deposit of $500'000 on my off-shore bank account.

One week later, another buddy invites me to ski in Verbier. We eat fois gras, drink Château Yquem, fuck some French escorts. Next day, I receive his quotation. Price is $6'000 a piece. Unfortunately it comes only in black but it has the word "Tactical" engraved in the case and they added an o-ring for added water resistance. Should I take it from him, I receive a Prestige 420 yacht (anchored in the Cayman Island, where I have one of my residence received for free with my last DoD order).

>$6000/night Russian escorts
What could they possibly offer for that much per night

I worked in a cnc machine shop for awhile.

Gov contracts were usually 10% or more above regular, bidders told us they were dumping money directly into the economy by paying us more.

Its true and works at our level, a tiny shop of wage workers, but a company like boeing or lockheed? Not as much.

Also manufacturing has layers of production. If the gov buys helicopters from sikorsky, sikorsky factors in the cost of sub contracts to smaller shops like us. On one run they subbed out everything down to the door handle. We factor in costs of our vendors as well. Its not like the big guys are the first and last stop, every layer adds a cost and profit margin all the way down to pulling the fucking ore out of the ground.

Because goverment corruption. They have agreements with the ((contractors)), also the govewrment don't give a fuck about prices because it is payed using taxpayers money, and the corrup members of the goverment get a cut of the benefits of the contractors.
>>

The defects do seemingly exist, the test results from the Ernst Mach Institute prove this (unless conspiracy theory).

H&K aren't to blame, however, because the rifle was made to Bundeswehr specs, even though H&K suggested that heavier barrels be used. This would up the cost and weight of each rifle, and the Bundeswehr were chasing departmental targets, so declined the offer.

Though I read that some of the G36 rifels tested were found to have plastic parts that were not up to spec i.e. made from the wrong polymer (which would account for deformation at temperature).

I used to work on base as a contractor and there's a lot of this:
>we can build that (item) for $500.
>thanks for the contract. Turns out it will actually be $800 dollars. Sure you could start the contract bidding process over, but it will end up costing more in the long run than just paying us a little extra.
>you need that (item) in Afghanistan ASAP? We can put a rush on the build but it will cost an extra 100$. And we'll have to contract someone to drive it out there. My cousins got a transport company. He can have a gaggle of Filipinos drive it out for $200.
>support for proprietary (item) if it fails? Sure thing, $500 annual
Plus per diem for the Filipinos to go fix it
And that's how your $500 (item) ends up costing $1500
>>
>>30196524
The difference the extra money goes all to idiotproofing and giving it the maximum possible reliability.

Sure slavshit is cheaper but thier shit gets blown up and set on fire randomly and shit like rockets not detatching themselves properly and blowing up on pylon like happened in syria recently

But I can buy a dozen Russian girls for that price and make them do anything I want anyway. Frankly, if I wanted to get really economical, I could buy a bunch of little Russian girls, train them, and start my own escort service.

You know those run-of-the-mill motorola handheld radios that almost all emergency responders use? They're around $5000 depending on the model. I guess that's the price for ruggerdization/reliability.

M4 + KAC rail + AN/PEQ15 + Aimpoint CompM4....id suck a dick just to get that setup for 1400. Not sure if the 1400 figure includes all that though, ive heard the rifle price is like 600 for just the rifle contract so id imagine the 1400 is for everything.
>>
>>30196619
Delusion and excuses, the goverment is leading you by the nose and you autist are praising them for it while the corps just laugh at you

>inb4 anything

Its the truth, thats capitalism
>>
>>30196524

We pay 1200 USD for an M4 with a KAC rail and a Comp M4S. Thats a pretty fucking good deal.
>>
>>30197606

NSN for a M4 is 1200 USD, an M16A2 is 600 USD. The M16 does not come with optics or a rail system. The M4 does.
