What melee weapons would give you the best odds of survival in a fight with Gigantopithecus blacki?
>>
>>30191248
Normal hunting weapons won't work, that things arms are longer than a boar spear.

Your only chance is a long spear, preferably with a large group of men attacking from all directions. If you are on your own and it grabs your spear you are fucked.
>>
>>30191248
Kaltec, seems to work on blackis pretty good.
>>
A pike. The longest pike you can find.

Or a big Macuahuitl.
>>
>>30191286

My thoughts as well.

I figure, ancient humans that lived contemporary to this thing would have been completely fucked in any and all encounters where they didn't outnumber it.

And even modern humans with firearms would need a hefty round designed for dangerous game to reliably put it down.
>>
>>30191336
Remember this thing is an ape and it lives in dense forest. You want something without too long a barrel that can handle a bit of brush.

.270, .30-06 and the like would put it down just fine if you had a shot in more open terrain though.
>>
>>30191286
Anon you just need to be creative
Combine a long spear and a macuahuitle so you have a long spear with lots of sharp blades and cover it in poison tree frog venom
>>
>>30191416
>melee =/= ranged
>>
>>30191248
Some sort of trowel. I would then dig up all the nut and fruit tree saplings I could find and slowly kill it with habitat alteration.
>>
>>30191443
>macuahuitle
>poison tree frog venom

Good luck finding that in cambodia
>>
>>30191453
Trowel would be better put to use digging an open pit trap with sharpened stakes.
>>
>>30191336
Hell, even then it would be a game of "how many of us are going to die before he does".

More than likely, both party's completely ignored each other.

Is a giant chimpanzee worse than a giant gorilla? I know gorillas are big on bluffs.
>>
>>30191551
Chimps don't bluff. And a 4 foot tall chimp is stronger than a 6'6" grown man.
>>
>>30191551
Chimps are psychotic.
Gorillas are more inclined to avoid conflict if at all possible. They are also vegetarians, unlike chimps, so they don't plan on eating you.
>>
>>30191572
Gorillas seem cool to be around in general.
>>
>>30191248
>melee against something hulk sized
You fucked up by letting it get that close.
>>
Torch and spear if we are talking Ugg-level technology. Men, dogs, fire and pikes with armor and sword if possible. The more the better. You're utterly fucked in single combat with something like that.

> inb4 clone army of G. blacki
>>
>>30191551
Chimps have warfare between groups and are carnivores. A chimp can literally pull your face off if it wants to, a giant one would be horrifying.

Gorillas are big plant eaters who only fight in self defence or in leadership challenges. And those are mostly showing off unless neither backs down.
>>
>>30191474
Implying you can't make a macuahuitle
Implying you can't substitute poison tree frog venom with with some other deadly venom
>>
>>30191609
I can't seem to find the exact quote, but Dian Fossey basically was able to get the gorillas she was studying to be totally chill with her by just being calm.

Fuck poachers.
>>
>>30191639
I think you would probably die. I think it would crush your skull like a walnut.
>>
>>30191665
>>30191609
Honestly gorillas are a lot like white people. Very chill and want to be left alone. You ah e to provoke them to get attached. Chimps are just little psychotics.

>Literally called Blacki

TOP BANT
>>
>>30191725
I think what makes them dangerous is their unpredictability.

If a creature is always violent, that's something you can count on -- something you can predict.

But if gorillas or white people are mostly calm but sometimes have a bad day and freak the fuck out and wreck shit or shoot up a school...

well that's harder to deal with when it comes to risk management.

Which would you rather have? Relative calm punctuated by totally random unpredictable spikes of extreme violence?

Or general day-to-day dickery that never really goes up or down?
>>
>>30191756
>Or general day-to-day dickery that never goes up

You seem to misunderstand what Chimpanzees are capable of. It doesn't go "up" because they are already at 11. They hunt nigger babies and eat them as normal behavior.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sprPV_q79RM
>>
>>30191796
Like I said: predictable risks are manageable.
>>
>>30191725
It's not really the same, but I generally think of Gorillas as being kind of autistic.
>>
>>30191248
You would die, regardless of what melee weapon you use. Regardless of poison. This thing is a monster.

The scariest part is, because it's chimp related, it's pretty smart. It won't just charge into a 20 foot spear, it'll knock that shit out of the way. Maybe even use it against you, not that it matters.

The only way to survive killing one is with traps (the non penis having kind). A pungee pit, a very large snare with some javelins thrown in (get it), something. God help you if it finds you first.
>>
>>30191306
Under rated
>>
>>30191756

chimps are also 6X quicker to react in a combat situation.
>>
>>30191248

It's too large to move quickly like a chimp. It undoubtedly relied on it's size to keep it safe, like a giant sloth. It would have no reason to have evolved great speed as well.

A well trained human with a hefty broad sword would have a good chance against one. If it reached for you, could could chop off a few knuckles, giving it a bit of pause, forcing it to retreat or panic, or become defensive.
>>
>>30192005

also with some stealth you could sneak up on it, and plunge a sword or a spear into it's neck before it had time to react. These things didn't go extinct because they were unkillable fighting machines.
>>
>>30192017
I would bet that it went extinct due to climatic reasons. Too bad that the Chinese ground up all the fossils for "medicine"
>>
Wait why is this even that scary again? We already drove this pussy to extinction before we even invented the wheel and besides a hippo would wreck its shit anyway
>>
>>30192047
Are you a hippo?
>>
>>30192059
I don't see how that's relevant to this discussion.
>>

>>30191336
>And even modern humans with firearms would need a hefty round designed for dangerous game to reliably put it down.
7.62 NATO or any full size rifle caliber can make quick work of it. Same with fragmenting or expanding intermediate cartridges. If it's pistol rounds, you're fucked unless you have some heavy caliber hotloads (If that can even stop it).
>>
>>30192095
Seriously I don't understand why people constantly underestimate how killy 7.62 and for that matter rifle rounds in general are.
12 inches of oak motherfucker do you penetrate it?
>>
You better get a razor sharp machete that isn't too long, very light weight metal, and be ready to cut and move. You would have to go death by a thousand cuts.

>cut finger
>move
>cut hand
>move
>cut arm
>move
>cut hand again
>move
>cut leg
>move

Your not going to get a killshot on that thing unless it's already in a position to kill you.
>>
A .50 Beowulf SBR? :^)
>>
>>30191638
Carnivores? Not quite, meat makes up a tiny fraction of their diet. They hunt because not only is meat fucking tasty, but even the alpha has to beg me for a chunk of colobus monkey, good ol' social currency and whatnot.

However, chimp hunts are successful 80% of the time. And the females in Senegal hunt sleeping monkeys with spears.
>>
>>30192113
>Seriously I don't understand why people constantly underestimate how killy 7.62 and for that matter rifle rounds in general are.
>12 inches of oak motherfucker do you penetrate it?

Because it's not just about killing it, it's about killing it before it kills you.

Why do you think .700 nitro express and other dangerous game / elephant rounds exist?

It's so that when the beast charges, you've got a better chance of knocking it down on your first shot no matter WHERE you hit.

You get a second trigger for the second shot because a maximum of two is all you're going to get when you're being charged by a wildebeest or Lion.

>If it reached for you, could could chop off a few knuckles, giving it a bit of pause, forcing it to retreat or panic, or become defensive.

Would depend entirely on the psychology of the thing. Will it back off if it's in pain, or will it just adrenaline rush, go berserk, and snap you in two?
>>
>>30192005
This
I was going to say machete and move move move. It would be a death by a thousand cuts scenario instead of one death plunge. Cut off a finger or 2, move cut at the arm, move, cut at a leg maybe, move. Diminish him over a period of time.
>>
>>30192243
And how often does that happen? Chimps don't match the biological definition of carnivory.

Chimps are bloodthirsty war-mongers in general, yes, but we're not attacking each other on a daily basis. Chimp organization is fission-fusion, with individuals splitting off into tiny groups to forage for leaves, fruit, termites, that sort of thing.
>>
>>30192233
I'm not arguing with that or saying I'd be eager to hunt fucking water buffalo with an AK, I'm just saying. Like, there was some dude asking about weapons for his sci fi shit and I distinctly remember him questioning real fuckin' NATO's ability to penetrate an inch thick bone plate. Like seriously man fuck
>>
>>30192268
I would guess that the thing is a ommnivore that focuses on vegetation based on size alone, but we don't really have good teeth fossils. It's probably social, and fairly, being a primate, and I would guess K-selected. This would lead me to believe that if you scared it enough, it would back off if it was by itself.
I'm just guessing here though.

Connection points for the muscle gives them greater mechanical leverage than a human of comparable size. They also have more muscle for their mass than we do. It also makes them far less efficient. A chimp requires more than twice the caloric intake than a human. We're leaner, less heavily muscled and are optimized for walking and running efficiency. Humans have higher long distance endurance than any other land mammals. Only horses and some canines come close. The favorite hunting tactic of our ancestors was to literally run prey to exhaustion and kill it when it collapsed.

The trade of for that running endurance is we are the most lightly built of the primates.

Voulge, glaive, guisarme, whatever you want to call it. Sharp strong blade with some weight to it on a good long pole, maybe put a meat tenderizer or a big nasty spike on the back side for good measure. If you want to make sure it dies regardless coat the sharp points with strong toxins. Plenty of nasty venomous snakes and shit in this thing's native region and it's highly unlikely that there's not other toxins available as well.

Thinking about it you could just put a basket with a big angry cobra or other notably venomous and irritable snake in it on the end of a big long pole. Just use a simple pull line and peg trigger to open the basket full of hate. Sneak up, hold so basket is upside down, pull pin dumping cobra on head, slam basket over head, run like fuck while the cobra loses it's shit all over biggun.

truth is your bigger chimp males are 125% stronger than an average human athlete (not a powerlifter or anything) that makes them significantly stronger than your average human male.
however, humans can beat chimps in hand to hand. it's not without risk you can easily lose fingers or your balls or anything that sticks out. but the chimps while being insanely strong in pulling stuff in and grabbing are not very good at grappling and handling being pushed by a humans weight. and they are very bad at boxing too they have awful endurance a human can run circles around them at an obstaccle course. humans could actually beat them silly. try it if you don't mind your testicles ripped off.

>On February 16, 2009, Travis attacked Sandra Herold's 55-year-old friend Charla Nash, inflicting devastating injuries to her face and limbs. >Travis had left the house with Sandra Herold's car keys, and Nash came to help get the chimp back in the house; upon seeing Nash holding one of his favorite toys, Travis immediately attacked her.[11]
>Herold, then 70 years old, attempted to stop Travis by hitting him with a shovel and stabbing him with a butcher knife.
>The ape was angered more.
>Herold then called 9-1-1 and pleaded for help. Travis' screams can be heard in the background of the tape as Sandra pleads for police, who initially believed the call to be a hoax, until she started screaming, "He's eating her!"[16][22][23]
>Travis walked up to the police car when it arrived, tried to open a locked passenger door, and smashed a side-view mirror. Then he went calmly around to the driver's-side door and opened it, at which point Officer Frank Chiafari shot him several times. Travis retreated to the house, where he was found dead next to his cage.[11]

human record bite strength is about 4 times that of an average gorillas. well most civilized humans are pretty weak in that regard tho.

i could crush her windpipe break her neck and ribs or skull with my hands.
so there is that. don't underestimate humans. we can kill the majority of the animal kingdom with bare hands. big apes and some megafauna are the sole exceptions.

First of all, I'd want to get in some dense forest, preferably with lots of rocks and ravines and gullies. This creature is big, and probably gentle, but fast as fuck, you would not want to meet this guy in a field.
Sneak up on him and with your atlatl or bow, try to get it in the neck, head, or gut. Make sure you've got a strong bow or you're good at throwing an atlatl. this thing isn't wearing armour, so a shot to the head could kill it with a strong bow, and a shot to the neck would make it bleed out. If your shot misses or hits somewhere else, then run through the thickest brush and trees that you can. It's fast, but probably not very agile, so do lots of turns and zigzags and shit like that. Once you run far enough shoot an arrow, and keep running into denser woodland. keep doing that and It could be dead within an hour at the most.

It would be difficult but one man could easily do it. With practice I could do it in 3 months, if I practiced my endurance and archery.

With a large group of people, get 10 guys to shoot their bows, and 10 guys in front with long spears to stab it. the other guys keep on shooting bows. That would be easy.

and compared to 5'9 Neanderthals, early humans being 5'2-5'5 on average made them seem like giants.

This is a creature that would live in dense rainforest. I would guarentee that it is more efficient at moving through the underbrush than you are.
>do lots of turns and zigzags and shit like that
>through the thickest brush and trees you can
Have fun with that.
>>30191248
To answer your question, OP, whatever weapon you would use, it should likely be used at night and paired with fire. Gigantopithicus was likely extremely similar to other great apes, including ourselves. This means that it likely was diurnal and had very poor vision at night. The best way to kill this creature with melee weapons would be to track it until it made its nest for the night and return after dark with a group of men armed with spears and torches. The fire would serve to frighten and confuse the beast while also compromising what little night vision it would have after waking up, opening up the chance for you and your men to attack with your spears.

Ignoring/avoiding it. The ape is the primate equivalent of a giant panda.
>>
>>30191938
The jaws of Gigantopithecus are deep and very thick. The molars are low-crowned and flat, and exhibit heavy enamel suitable for tough grinding.[9] The premolars are broad and flat and configured similarly to the molars. The canine teeth are neither pointed nor sharp, while the incisors are small, peglike, and closely aligned. The features of teeth and jaws suggested that the animal was adapted to chewing tough, fibrous food by cutting, crushing, and grinding it. Gigantopithecus teeth also have a large number of cavities, similar to those found in giant pandas, whose diet, which includes a large amount of bamboo, may be similar to that of Gigantopithecus.[3]

In addition to bamboo, Gigantopithecus consumed other vegetable foods, as suggested by the analysis of the phytoliths adhering to its teeth. An examination of the microscopic scratches and gritty plant remains embedded in Gigantopithecus teeth suggests that they fed on seeds and fruit, as well as bamboo.

The thing is essentially an oversized orangutan. Avoid pissing it off and you'll be fine.

Considering African poachers use 12 gauge slugs, rusted aks, many surplus rifles and I've even seen a martini Henry.

I'm gonna go with the explanation that legal hunters generally follow weapon laws, and the only people who can afford to hunt elephants are pretentious rich people who are too good for a Mauser so they buy a hand carved h&h over under.

Also consider, people used to hunt elephants, rhinos, hippos, lions, etc since before ancient Egypt. It's really more about teamwork and skills.

there were outliers in the Levant and in Spain that were over 6 foot. the neanderthals that people hear about being short little shrimps arent true.

the complete skeletons they found in turkey were 5'11, and the one they found in the caves in spain were something like 6'1, most neanderthals were cannibals too, most of the bones you find were butchered and then thrown into a shitpile. its a necessity if you were on the ragged edge of survival and big and mean in ice age europe. they probably ate other groups, and cro-magnon man, and buried their own as a sign of respect.

OP, if you try fighting this thing with any, and I do mean ANY "conventional" melee weapon, you are absolutely dead. I am not joking, here. The people who have suggested chainsaws, or even chainsaw-spears, are on the right track, but even if you managed to impale the thing perfectly (which you won't; it'll probably bat the fucking thing out of the way,) it would still be within clobbering range, or close enough that it could withstand the pain and fuck your day up. Bear in mind, that thing's arms alone are over two meters in length, whereas any sword you could effectively wield would only bring your arms to about one and a half meters at most, and something as unwieldy and long as a pike simply wouldn't do enough damage, if it you even managed to penetrate its skin. In other words, you could not possibly wield enough stoppin powah to beat this thing in one blow, which you would need to. Bear in mind, an adult silverback gorilla is said to be 20x stronger than 30 men.

If you absolutely INSIST on hunting this thing in a melee (to which I would absolutely insist you reconsider, as you WILL DIE,) you mustn't skimp out on power whatsoever. Assuming you can actually lure this thing into the open, which I am sure you could not, I would bring nothing shorter than a downed electrical cable, wired up to a high-powered, personal generator worn on your back. If you aren't strong enough to carry one on your own back, you probably aren't strong enough to even consider swinging something so heavy as a downed power line, but I suppose you could wear one on the back of an extremely expensive, fully-rubberized, powered exoskeleton? Don't come with anything less than 50 million volts or you are just going to piss it off, and at that point, you are basically asking for a rig that can produce at least half of the strength of a weak lightning bolt without igniting everything around you. Good fucking luck getting that to work.
>>
>>30213726

As for what you'd do in a real situation where you are forced to fight this thing where it lives (ie: in a cave,) which you undeniably would be, God help you. "Abandon hope, all ye who enter," as it were. Consider bringing a wheeled apparatus to help you support the frying end of your power-line whilst indoors... basically, you would need a tesla battering-ram if you even wanted to stand a chance, and good luck getting that fucker inside a cave.

You would still not be able to do it alone tho. horse would definitely get scared unless its extremely loyal to rider. 6 guys, 3 of them on horses. 3 guys on ground have heavy armor, to at least prevent death from a head on hit, and spears to keep range. horses and the riders have light armor, shields and spears, and should be the most skilled of the 6. The spears, body armor, and shields should also be made with skill. this set-up would definitely kill one of those things.
