they're cheap, can do a variety of things depending on type of shotshell, and as much as people like to hype up the 68 man gang that'll come into your house, 1-2 shells will take care of most problems unless the home invaders came equipped and specifically to fight.

I'd love to live in a cinder block steel subframe home that was super open floor plan like pic related but I'm sure they cost $$$$$ even if they are easier to put up.

Would be nice to go for a contrast look inside with all oiled wood furniture and dark leathers.

USA is a big place. House construction varies by geography and materials available.

In North with lots of trees? Wood houses. In area with lots of clay in SE? Brick. In desert or the swamp of FL? Concrete block, which is great for places with high wind and hot temps.

A properly designed house, of any material, can stand as long as you're willing to maintain it. No house in USA is older than 300 BC euros immigrants haven't been here that long.
