What's the most reliable AK under $900?

I understand this thread probably shows up a lot but there wasn't one around and I didnt feel it belonged in akg or qtddtot. I'm looking for a cheap general purpose AK (x39) with all wood furniture... problem is it seems that cheap means garbage.

My lsg has two century arms for $600 (N-PAP undefolder and an M70 W-PAP) but I've heard a lot of bad things about them. I've heard WASR10's are good though, but is it only marginally better?

Also I've heard cast trunnion's are garbage, as are Romanian AK's. I don't know what's shillery, what's autism, or what's accurate. I just want to avoid wasting my money. So are these things as bad as people say? If so, what's the cheapest AK that is as little of these things as possibru?
>>
>>29967971
WASRs are pretty nice. Still, I'd build my own from a receiver if I were you.
>>
stay away from century unless you want it fucked on arrival

A used arsenal. Shitty paint and all.

Who makes them? Also I'm not sure I can build an AK.

>29968003
What about petrenov arms or James river cram Atlantic? They're cheap and appear to be what I'm looking for but Idk anything about them such as canted sights, cast or forged trunnions, or build quality.

Ultimately I don't wish to add optics or change the furniture. I just want to learn to appreciate the rifle for what it is. Pic related is the James river
>>
>>29968027
Would this be a better route than building one myself? I don't want someone else's problem, and after that first anon brought it up I've been trying to determine the pros and cons.. what all would I need to build it? Where do I get the parts? Would it come out on par with a well made factory production? And how would the price compare?
>>
>>29968162
Also what parts are preferred? Like should I look for a polish kit, Russian kit, Bulgarian, East German, etc.?? Just go with what's available? Again my budget is $900 on the rifle it's self. I can spend more on necessary tools and hardware if need be.

Why are the handguards red and the buttstock orange?
>>

I think you're colorblind sir. They're the same finish... but could someone please assist me further?
>>
>>29967971
Own both an NPAP and a WASR, and here's my take:

NPAPs are fine. Overall SLIGHTLY higher build quality than WASRs. Tighter fit, beefier parts.

However, they will also only take Yugoslavia-specific furniture and some parts, meaning you have a far more limited aftermarket. Also Yugo ergonomics are different from standard AKs.

I like Yugos a lot, but they aren't a standard AKM, and WASRs are, which makes them a better starter AK even with the very slight quality gap.

Chrome-lining is less of a thing than it's made top be here.

Also, the bad shit you were hearing about NPAPs is regarding a poorly-QCd batch from late-2014/early-2015. And most of those problems were cheap/easy fixes, if ones that shouldn't have cleared the factory floor. He most notable of these was guns shipping with out-of-spec recoil spring assemblies, which led to a bunch of premature wear but was fixable with a $20 surplus part. You can check for this simply by seeing if the BCG rattles while it's in battery. It shouldn't.

the zastava is the way to go for a out of the box good to go ak. the older ones with the orginal stock have a bit of a high comb so its best to trim it up a bit and reshape it with some files and then refinish buttstock, pretty easy to do and afterwards you will have a nice ak.
>>
>>29968208
We'll if you purchased a 100% receiver, you would just need rivets and a rivet kit, and some special tools specifically for the trunnions and other ak parts.

80% receivers would need a hydraulic press and a welder
>>
Only trust an AK built by your own hands.
>>
>>29970520
>>29970465
Are they all made by century?
>>
>>29970558
Can you be more specific on the tools required? Seriously considering this as an option and would like to have a full set up first.

Wouldn't I also need a parts kit to go with the 100% receiver? I'm not gonna do a flat or an 80%. So what all would I really need to accomplish this?
>>
>>29967971
The polish ak74 tantal is pretty good, I haven't had any problems with mine
>>
>>29970572
Fool none of them are MADE by Century except the RAS47 and C39. Both of which are garbage.

Century IMPORTS the WASR, which is made in Romania by RomArm/Cugir, and the NPAP, which is made in Serbia by Zastava. Literally all they do is widen out the magwell in a CNC machine to accept double-stack mags and put in enough US-made parts to make the gun 922r-compliant.
>>
>>29970590
Yes, you would need the receiver, the parts kit, and depending on whether or not it came with your parts kit, a barrel.

Best route if you don't mind it being serialized is to get a finished (100%) receiver, and build from there.

You can get good parts kits for 250-500, and NDS-EZ receiver for 90 shipped.

Also ak-builders.com has a building tool kit for it that would include the rivets, rivet gun, and specialized tools.

And this is literally everything I would need?

What should I look for in a parts kit? As far as quality or origin.
>>
>>29970649
http://ak-builder.com/
http://www.nodakspud.com/

Check out these places. Most of their parts lots should be pretty good, if you really want you could avoid cast stuff.

They even sell parts kits with the barrels installed.

Nodak spud has the 100% "EZ" receivers

Be aware some parts kits may come with well worn furniture, if that's something you don't like, plan on new furniture. Some kits may even have wear on other pieces.
>>
>>29970649
stop listening to that internet gunsmith. You are looking at $600+ just in tools to properly build an AK. Parts kits are 400-500 w/ a barrell now, another $100 for the receiver, and $100 if you care about 922(r).

About a $1200 endeavour not including finishing costs, and assuming you don't fuck anything up.

Building an Ak is perfectly doable, lots of people have but it's not economical to build just one, and probably not pratical to do for your first foray into the AK world. It's not like assembly an AR.
>>
>>29970760
I think the wear would add to the character of the rifle.. it will appear to have a story, a history.. and that appeals to me a lot.

I'll check out the sites, any way to tell what is cast and what isn't? I'd like to avoid it if possible.

>$600 in tools
>for a 100% receiver
>parts kits with barrels for $350 all over the place

Seriously?
>>
>>29970994
I'm conflicted now... I do want to properly build it, and potentially many after it.. and I feel purchasing the tools necessary would be beneficial in the long run.. but how much of this is autism?
>>
>>29970994
>parts kits with barrels for $350 all over the place
We must have different ideas about what "all over the place" means

>for a 100% receiver
sure, have a complete newb bend up a blank

>$600 in tools
I'll stick with that estimate if you are getting things worth a shit.
>>
Thread hijacker here. Would a Romanian MD-63 fall under the classification of WASR or is it filthy gypsy shite?
>>
>>29971087
go on atlanticfirearms, get a WASR, N-PAP, or one of their own, but outsourced, builds. Figure out if you even really like the platform. Figure how it works, get a feel for the gun, and then go from there.

And what kits are preferable between Russian, Romanian, Polish, Hungarian, East German, Bulgarian, and Egyptian??

Did most of the looking up on AK-builder, and it seems that the only tools needed for a 100% receiver build is:

>A shop press
>A barrel press
>Their rivet tool
>Trigger Guard rivet tool
>rivets
>Headspace gauge
What am I forgetting? A rubber mallet? A screw driver? Any sort of drill? Clamps? Dremel, etc?
>>
>>29973851
As opposed to a Tantal

The 74s Century famously built with 5.56 barrels.
>>
>>29968106
Cugir makes WASRs.
>>
+1 for npap. I have one as a starter an and it is beefy and functional. The lack of aftermarket sucks but its a solid gun. Magpul Zhukov and hogue make it look like sex

Would post pic but at work
>>
>>29968106
james river is pretty good
>>
>>29975344
getting out the old rivets and receiver scraps from the build kit you got can be the biggest bitch. A good air chisel or something of the sort might be in the cards, but a dremel can get the job done (slowly and painstakingly)

You might also think about getting a reamer, depending on the builds you're doing and the availability of quality barrels for those builds.
