I suggest looking into lever-action Marlins or Henrys (Henry's are better quality, IMO, but both work fine) that can shoot .38 special and .357 magnum (or .44 special/.44 magnum). In a rifle they have very light recoil and greater power compared to a revolver. The ammo is (at least for .38 special) is much cheaper than most rifle ammunition. They would be fun to shoot at a range, and very effective for home defense as well.

- semi auto rifles with detatchable magazine and "assault features" (folding stock, pistol grip, etc)
- semi auto shotguns with detatchable magazines and "assault features"

not banned:
- non-semi auto rifles (bolt)
- non-semi auto shotguns
- .22lr semi auto with tube magazine
- semi auto rifles with less than 15 round capacity and no "assault features"
- semi auto rifles with less than 15 round capacity and a fixed magazine (bullet button maybe?)

one thing to note is that all handgun laws are technically pre-empted at the state level since the passage of the CCW law, so local governments have zero authority to restrict them. so basically the laws conflict currently. if it were tested in court you would win, but that would cost money. though they probably don't want to test it in court so that they can keep their bullshit ordinances. basically you could have an AR pistol if you accept the slight risk of being a test case if you were arrested, though rumor has it the CPD don't really care enough unless you're a gang banger and they're looking to tack on extra weapons violation charges.

if you want to be well within the law, get an SKS and call it a day.
